01.01.2022 TEXTBOOK UPDATE The Guild has worked with UWA Library this year to change the way UWA manages textbooks, to make access to unit resources more accessible and equitable based on student feedback. The recommendations of the paper have been endorsed by Academic Board and are set to be implemented in 2021. ESSENTIAL TEXTBOOKS... We are working with UWA to create a definition of essential textbooks so you know which books are truly essential for your course. Currently, this is undefined, meaning sometimes texts are labelled as essential but not referred to very frequently. Creating a definition will ensure textbooks are only listed as essential where the content of the text is necessary to complete the unit successfully. ONLINE ACCESS TO TEXTS During COVID-19, we received feedback from students in some units that no online versions of their essential textbooks were available. This results in students having to purchase the texts or read them in the library, which creates barriers to accessing unit content. To provide more accessibility, we advocated for assurance that all essential texts will be available in a digital format as far as possible. The Library is taking on broader work in this space to identify online textbook availability and negotiate when texts arent available online.
