24.01.2022 In celebration of Social Sciences Week, were taking a look at some of our amazing Social Sciences graduates! Meet Patrick, Assistant Curator at the Western A...ustralian Museum I started studying straight after high school in 2016. My undergraduate majors were Neuroscience and Archaeology, and in 2019, I completed honours in archaeology. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at UWA and have especially fond memories of travelling for both archaeological field trips and debating competitions. I studied neuroscience after falling in love with it during the Brain Bee at high school, organised by Jenny Rodger at UWA. My second major became archaeology after a very interesting first-year class with Sven Ouzman, where I ended up sourcing and firing my own clay tablet for an assignment. I was lucky enough to get a job at the Museum straight after graduation. I have remained connected to UWA since then, especially as I finish publishing work that I completed during my honours year. If youre interested in our Archaeology major, find out more www.uwa.edu.au/study/courses/archaeology

22.01.2022 This is Zara, shes a current Graduate Certificate in Social Impact student, a lover of hiking and baking, and is learning the art of surfing. Zara chose to study Social Impact because she has "always wanted to work out how to use my skillset to help those marginalised from the system." "In the past Ive been fascinated by the intersection of health care, policy and social programs and spent a bit of time in that pursuit. As a systems thinker I believe that by acquiring more ...knowledge of divergent industries can we consider ways to tackle some of the greatest global challenges that we face together." One way Zara is leading social change is through the creation of The Difference, an app that allows you to turn your virtual small change into a big impact by rounding up all your daily transactions to the nearest dollar and donating it to a charity of choice. "The idea for The Difference started when I was walking down the street and stopped and asked for spare change from someone sleeping rough. From there I researched trends in giving and donating and realised that there was a gap in donations from online or bank card transactions, using peoples digital spare change. "There was also increased scepticism around donations as the work and impact of traditional charities lacked visibility. The Difference app emerged as a solution to this problem, to provide a way for individuals to give with every shopping or online purchase. "Ironically, giving a little every time you shop is an act that allows you to be incredibly thoughtful without having to think about it! Were able to harness the power of technology to make sustainable and powerful change across the world, doing things differently than the generations before us; incorporating philanthropy into our everyday lives. "Students are able to track the impact of their donations through the app and see the difference that small donations can make with their friends and family. Even the smallest acts of kindness quickly add up to something much bigger. We want to prove that it doesnt matter what you give, its the intention to do something good that matters." On reflection, Zara shares some advice for other entrepreneurial students who have creative ideas. She says: "Definitely pursue it! Use the lean canvas method to rapid prototype and if you fail, fail fast, cheaply and move onwards. Or use that knowledge to inform the next phase of your development. I would also counsel others to really use their skillset for the betterment of humanity. When Ive done anything with others, at the core of my motivation I know that its time well spent." You can find out more about this initiative on their website www.the-difference.org, or download the app to Android and iOS by searching the app store for The Difference Fund Limited. #HumansofUWA

22.01.2022 This is Azrina. Shes in the final year of her Environmental Engineering PhD, has a keen interest in meeting new people, and learning more about different cultures which shes been able to do through her love of travelling. I believe its not only travelling that helps me to expand my perspective, to celebrate and be grateful to life; but also my unprejudiced and empathetic mind that helps me to enjoy the fullest. Azrina also has a strong desire to create a positive impac...t on our environment through wastewater management and recycling. Its this growing interest which led her to study greywater reuse. More than 1 in 10 people lack basic drinking water access on earth, and by 2050, at least 1 in 4 people will likely to be affected by chronic fresh-water scarcity. So how do we deal with this issue? An engineers task is to develop and apply a solution to a problem. In waste and wastewater management, we say reduce, reuse and recycle. Everyone can practise reduce in everyday life, but a sustainable reuse and recycle system needs to be developed by engineers which brings me to study greywater reuse. The most attractive part of my study is to use plants and green walls as the saviour to treat the greywater! Large scale implementation of my research could help reduce the water crisis in future. Azrina is currently participating in the Careers and Employability Award, and recently won a $100 Coles/Myer gift card for receiving one of the highest scores on her professional resume, using the VMOCK platform. VMOCK is a global Career Acceleration Platform that acts as a personal coach for job seekers along their career journey. The VMock Smart Resume Platform helped me to build a professional resume that stands out from the crowd. Being a last year student, I searched for different career development opportunities within UWA and came to know about the Careers and Employability Award. Participating in the award inspired me to explore more about career options and to challenge my boundaries. When I look back in time, I see myself with improved experience and knowledge, which encourages me more. Studying psychology, Raje coordinated the not-for-profit organisation’s social media content by sharing daily fitness videos, session ideas and activities. Raje said the extra challenge of adapting her internship to working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic was tricky at first.... 12.01.2022 This is Jacqui. Shes in the final semester of her Master of Commerce degree, specialising in Marketing and Management. She has quite the range of interests, from cheerleading, resin art and brunch dates with friends, to listening to crime podcasts. Shes also trying to learn how to play Euro-style board games which focus on the acquisition of resources rather than direct conflict. Plus, Jacqui used to be a high school teacher and is a current UniMentor! I originally gradu...ated from a teaching degree and was a high school teacher for many years which I loved but over time my interests and passion changed. I also run my own small business and became really interested in entrepreneurship and digital marketing. This is how I became interested in business and finally decided to take the first step with changing careers. I still love the education industry (as I still do relief teaching) but I would like to explore brand development and customer engagement in the future. I love my course because I feel like what Im learning about will be relevant after graduation. My lecturers have industry or research-based experience which is useful. Many classes look at success/failure of an organisation with case studies and I like engaging in discussion. I feel like I am constantly challenged and encouraged to think outside the box." About being a UniMentor, Jacqui says, Its exciting because you never know who youll meet and what friendships you can form. It involves reaching out to a small group of new students and providing assistance/advice, such as how to find your way around campus, or the best places to eat. I remember how lost I felt on my very first day at uni, so if Im able to help out one person and make the transition to learning a little bit easier, then that makes me happy." The top three things Jacqui has gained from being a UniMentor: More confidence and courage to initiate conversation Becoming open minded and curious just talking to people from different countries/backgrounds is so interesting, I love learning about other cultures and experiences Learned the value of giving back without expecting anything in return volunteering is a really rewarding experience. If youre open to enjoying new experiences and giving back, sign up today to join the UWA UniMentor program for Semester 1 2021: https://uwa.careerhub.com.au/s/unimentor #HumansofUWA

08.01.2022 Meet Tanya Fitzgerald, Professor of Higher Education, Dean and Head of the UWA Graduate School of Education theatre-goer, book-lover and self-confessed shoe enthusiast. Tanya started at UWA in 2019 after spending almost two decades working with universities in New Zealand, England and over east. Perth is such a diverse city; I love the landscapes, weather and the sense of community.... Day-to-day, Tanya leads a talented group of staff, working together to set the strategic direction, inspire people to achieve their goals, and ignite the flame of learning in others. Tanya also enjoys supervising PhD students as shes inspired by the sharing of ideas and the shaping of research that seeks to make a difference in the world. Seeing students discover new ways of thinking, bringing their ideas to life and developing a lifelong love of research is such a pleasure. They begin as novice researchers and incrementally become more independent as their curiosity takes hold. For herself, Tanya is living out her childhood dream albeit in a slightly different sense. I had a fantastic history teacher at school who drew me into the stories she created and the heroines of the past. I studied history at university and became very much an archive dweller; buried in the archives of the past, hunting out and retelling stories and bringing to life the feisty women who seemed to beckon to me from their letters, diaries, poetry and songs. Being a teacher is very much a performance; not a scripted one, but one that is very much improvisation. Teaching is about engaging an audience in the story you want told and opening them up to exploring new worlds they encounter. So being a historian and teacher, I have become that person I dreamed of being. If you want to hear more from Tanya and learn about UWAs Education courses, register for our Study Postgrad Info Series: www.uwa.edu.au//pos/register-for-the-study-postgrad-series #HumansofUWA

06.01.2022 Richard is a UWA Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery graduate, currently working as a junior doctor at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. Hes also a 2017 recipient of the Rhodes Scholarship. While living in the UK for two years, Richard completed a Masters of Population Health and Masters of Public Policy at the University of Oxford. He has a particular interest in the operation of health systems, looking at how to treat multiple patients in the most effective way possibl...e. For my Masters of Population Health, I undertook a thesis on the costs of obesity within the UKs hospital system, which offered me valuable experience in health systems research. For my Masters of Public Policy, I gained some great insights into public policy development, which I hope to use in translating clinical experience and research evidence into effective health policy solutions. These are skills and experiences that I hope to apply in my future work balancing clinical medicine with research and policy. This includes my recent work in the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre as part of WA Healths COVID-19 response. The scholarship allowed me to spend two years studying abroad, which was a fantastic life experience, particularly given it was undertaken at one of the worlds leading medical research institutions. Rhodes Scholars are awarded to over 100 students globally each year, so it was also a great opportunity to develop some fantastic friendships with people from around the world. On advice for applicants, Richard says, Give some thought to why you want to do postgraduate study, how your chosen course will assist you with your future goals and whether Oxford is the right place to go. All of this should be reflected in your application. Dont miss out on getting your application in! They close this Friday 11 September: https://bit.ly/2Yvprji #HumansofUWA

03.01.2022 This is Alexandra. Alexandra conducted an environmental sustainability audit for the Perth Festival during her internship through The McCusker Centre for Citizenship at UWA. The Master of Professional Engineering student estimated the Festivals carbon footprint, made recommendations on how they could reduce emissions associated with the Festival, and produced an emissions calculator to help future Perth Festival programmers to understand the carbon footprint of various dec...isions and operation choices. Being able to use knowledge that Ive learned from all of my vacation work, undergrad and masters and tie it into a project that I have ownership of and will genuinely inform change has been really exciting and rewarding, and the perfect way to finish my university education (for now), she said.
