24.01.2022 The Otway Silver Wattle is blooming in Gellibrand River, otherwise it is quiet and peaceful! Next week the action begins towards our aim of stopping spraying of herbicides and pesticides in Childrens playgrounds!

23.01.2022 Checking out the bird life on Lake Colac jetty

22.01.2022 Spring has sprung and it’s very apparent as we are loving the sunny mornings having our first cuppa of the day! The Otways here in Gellibrand are perfect and perhaps a little squishy in some areas due to the rainfall which has been ok so far but I think it’s going to be a warm spring but who knows!! Enjoy the warm weather!!

17.01.2022 It has been the most glorious few days here in the Otways! What a beautiful part of the world and we want to keep it that way and that includes clean water and no spraying around childrens playgrounds and waterways and anywhere! Thanks for the support and views and I will endeavour to keep you posted on current affairs in this beautiful neck of the woods!

16.01.2022 We have been investigating steam weeders. Roadside herbiciding by the Colac Otway Shire workers does not seem too healthy for anyone. It seems these steam weeders are not popular. Talking to the works managers from 10 shires, there was zero enthusiasm. The two main comments were; It was not as effective as herbicide, and another manager said They use too much water and they are hot and steamy. We have a new playground in Gelli, so we are beginning negotiations with the shire to make the playground spray free. The old playground was obviously herbicided including around the sandpit. We would like to know if anyone has seen steam weeders in any other shires please and any ideas are welcome!! Cheers until next time

15.01.2022 We are sitting out in the bush on Boxing Day talking and eating chocolate and liquorice all sorts with natural colouring. Wish you all were here its beautiful! We are exploring steam weeding as an alternative to herbicides, especially those used around town. ie: Childrens playgrounds/sandpits. We are beginning in the town areas with a plan to expand. Up to date we have found that steam weeders are not widely used. The excuse is from work managers being, They use too much ...water and, It is not as effective as herbicides So we would like to ask anyone reading this if they have noticed any shires using this steam weeding officially or even privately. We would be most grateful if you could pass any such news onto us, as we believe that the least herbicides the better. Have a great Boxing Day and make sure you drink plenty of clean water!! 15.01.2022 Thanks to loopholes, drinking water sources for more than 117 MILLION people are inadequately protected from pollution. If we dont act, the dumping will continue. Help restore Clean Water Act safeguards: http://bit.ly/OdjhvN #ProtectCleanWater

14.01.2022 It’s been a chilly morning but the sun is shining across beautiful Colac Otway! Let’s hope there are lots of sunny days ahead so everyone can have fun hunting for golden gunboots along the Old Beechy Rail Trail (Sept 21 - Oct 5)

13.01.2022 Welcome to our world in Gelli. The Autumn did not give us a great glut out of mushrooms like some other years; we missed them. Serves us right for having expectations. It has been raining and the creeks are being flooded out to the sea through Princeton. I hope there is not too much herbicide from the plantations and the farms who do cropping. We had water testing done a few years ago and there was a little of everything we didnt want in the water. It cost us $2000 and we w...ere bust. Now we observe the river banks being heavily sprayed for blackberry and the plantations aerial sprayed for crystamalid beetle. We feel we know this is not right for all life including platypus, fish, bees, marsupials and all other organisms. The plantation company Midway have connected with us. They were recently granted a FSC which is a sustainability tick for their forestry. They asked me what we could say about them that was nice and what had pleased us in the last 20 years. We had been protesting about the aerial spray spraying, and had taken them to VCAT. We told them again that it was the poisons in large amounts that we hated; however , we felt obliged to give recognition for the fact that a buffer zone had been left on Loves Creek, and a promise at VCAT not to aerial spray the plantation they had been hired to establish for a Japanese company. We will hopefully go on a walk to view another plantation with them. WE have NOT gone soft on chemical farming. It is sad that the creek population are forced to submit to poisons as well as us. 12.01.2022 Want to join our group? Memberships $1.00 We started this group 10 yrs ago because we saw a helicopter spraying herbicides over a creek in our water catchment area. To help combat this practice. we decided then that we would fight against any more new plantations being grown within this area. We went to vcat because another plantation was already being planned which went ahead. However we secured a promise from the plantation company not to aerial spray this particular catchment.

12.01.2022 Detected in tap water Wantirna April 2016. Low level, but confirmation that Melbourne Waters treatment system didnt filter out all of this herbicide. Source ...for Wantirna Drinking Water is Silvan Dam which in turn is supplied from Upper Yarra and OShannassy Reservoirs through open aquaducts. Spray drift probably the cause. See more

10.01.2022 Our group has been very quiet for a while as a chemical paradigm takes time to show change. However, this new move into FACE BOOK may be a catalyst in this regard.Thank you all for your interest which we may grab up as support in a hungry hugging way when nobody is looking. i will do my best to inform you about what is happening. I would love your ideas as we run out love Valerie Warner
