16.01.2022 Spending Device-Free Time Together You should make it a priority to spend quality time with your partner without your cell phone. But before you make any rules, you should examine your own phone habits first and discuss the issue with your partner calmly and respectfully. James Roberts, in his study, wrote Too Much of a Good Thing: Are You Addicted to Your Smartphone? Explains that if you need to improve as well, approach your partner that this is something you need to tac...kle together. If you point the finger at your partner without taking responsibility for your own behaviour, it wont go over well. As Dr John Gottman suggests, it is always best to express how you feel and what you need by using a soft start-up. Once you and your partner have that discussion, try taking 30 minutes together, face-to-face, as a trial run without phones. Notice how different your interaction and conversation feels when you can see each others facial expressions and make eye contact, which will give you an indication of how much more connected the two of you may be when spending time device-free. Express how you feel after those 30 minutes, and try to build that routine into your daily life with your partner. Outside of 30 minutes of daily device-free time, silencing your phone during dinner, or even leaving it in another room, is a good habit to get into so you can focus on the meal and on your partner and/or family. You can make an agreement with your partner on when and where smartphones will be allowed or not, and there are apps that you can use to monitor how much time youre spending on the phone, especially if youd like to cut back on device usage overall. If youd like more information on ways to connect with your partner, or if youre having problems, reach out and give me a call - Dave 0435006423

12.01.2022 One of the many tools I use to help calm anxiety and stress. Its better to breathe through your nose rather than your mouth, it takes more conscious thought - which is the aim of the exercise.

12.01.2022 Stonewalling, as a term, paints a vivid picture. When a person stonewalls, theyre not interested in listening to reason, even if it does make sense. Its like an impenetrable fortress. That fortress communicates one thing: keep out. But fortresses also exist to protect whats inside.... When you or your partner stonewalls, it is usually to protect from feeling psychologically and physically overwhelmed. Thoughts within the fortress might sound like: Im feeling attacked. I cant take this. Maybe theyll tire themselves out if I dont respond. If I say anything back, this will only get worse. However ineffective, stonewalling is a response to wanting to protect yourself. The next time you encounter a fortress, it may be best to ask what its protecting. It could be your key to getting beyond its walls and a better way of communicating.
