25.01.2022 As 2014 draws to a close we have a couple of farewells and best wishes to pass on. Stuart Clifford has been a member of our Reader Services Team for 7 years and leaves us to begin a new chapter of his life moving to Singapore. We wish him, Sharon and the family all the best and thank him for all the humour, courtesy and support he has given us over the years.

25.01.2022 Calling all budding women crime writers. Sisters in Crime in Brisbane have announced an award for the best unpublished crime story of 5,000 words or under as part of their annual Scarlet Stilletto Awards. What makes this award interesting is that the main protagonist must have a disability. Entries close on the 31st August, but if you dont make the deadline this year, there is always 2015. Read more about the Liz Navratil award below.

24.01.2022 Hear an interview with Authorprenuer Hazel Edwards, author of Writing a Non Boring Family History, talking about memoir writing. Perfect timing if you are spring cleaning and finding old photos, letters and other bits and bobs. Perhaps this will inspire you to put pen to paper for future generations....

24.01.2022 Curling up with a good read is certainly one of the most relaxing things you can do. Today from 6.00pm - 7.00pm, it is the National Reading Hour. For this hour reading becomes more important than anything else. In libraries and homes, across Australia people will be sitting down and reading. Yes! Just reading! They will be reading to their family, reading to groups or just reading for the sake of reading! So turn off the T.V, turn your phone off and just spend some time reading.

21.01.2022 What do you make of this interesting art installation from an artist in Scotland? From the Guardian Newspaper... "The Future Library project, conceived by the award-winning young Scottish artist Katie Paterson, began, quietly, this summer, with the planting of a forest of 1,000 trees in Nordmarka, just outside Oslo. It will slowly unfold over the next century. Every year until 2114, one writer will be invited to contribute a new text to the collection, and in 2114, the trees will be cut down to provide the paper for the texts to be printed and, finally, read" Read more from the article and also find out what the author and first contributor Margaret Atwood has to say.

21.01.2022 One of our intrepid Librarians in Reader Services is taking part in an art project about the evolving roles of libraries, librarians and information management throughout history for the Melbourne Fringe Festival this year. Good luck to our very own Peter Duggan for embodying the human element in this age of information overload ...

20.01.2022 Its been childrens book week this week, and childrens book writers and illustrators have been celebrated in libraries and schools all over Australia. This years winners of the Childrens book week awards included the picture book Rules of Summer by Shaun Tan. The swap by Jan Ormerod. And for the Older reader wildlife by Fiona Wood. Do you still have a small collection of picture books on your bookshelf? One of mine is Fernand the Bull. The bull who just wanted to smell flowers. You may remember it too?

20.01.2022 With so much sadness in the news of late, you may feel like a bit of a lift. Why not have a read of some Australian Rural Romance? The recipe for this growing genre of fiction starts with a bit of Mills and Boons traditional romance simmering away, add heaps of strong, realistic female and male characters, toss in a few large dollops of gritty suspense/mystery or family drama and sprinkle liberally with spice! We recommend Bonwyn Parry, Honey Brown, Nicole Alexander and many more.....

Unfortunately for many people with Diabetes and Diabetes Retinopathy - which causes damage to the very small blood vessels on the back of the eye leading to vision loss - can be a real issue. That said, its not all bad news (did we mention the slice?) By eating the... right food and maintaining good glucose levels, Diabetes Retinopathy is something that can be avoided. We hope you enjoy the slice. http://www.australiandiabetescouncil.com//date-and-muesli/
