22.01.2022 COMET NEOWISE IN WA SKIES TONIGHT WA will have a rare opportunity to spot a comet on Sunday, when comet Neowise appears in southern skies. Matt Woods from... the Perth Observatory says the best time to spot Neowise will be tonight at 6.30pm. Neowise will be low in the sky and you will need good views to low north-west horizon. Regional WA can expect prime viewing due to the lack of light pollution. It may be visible to the naked eye but Matt suggests bringing out your camera and tripod if you have one. "It will be really interesting to see if it's as good here as it is in the northern hemisphere," he said. "We only get a few naked eye comets during the decade so this is the first one of the 2020s." Maybe that's a good thing. "Traditionally comets have been the bringers of doom, so it's just a bit convenient that this has turned up in the inner solar system and we have got COVID-19." : Modes Rodriguez/Flickr

22.01.2022 Have you climbed Bluff Knoll? Imagine doing it 14 times non-stop! Albany police officer Kylie Bell is doing exactly that in the name of charity. The experienc...ed ultra marathon runner is raising funds for the Albany Women's Shelter and the Animal Protection Society of WA. The grueling feat is the equivalent to a virtual climb of Mt Everest. "At this point in time I was supposed to be in Europe doing an event, but unfortunately that got cancelled (due to COVID-19)," Ms Bell said. "I been doing a fair bit of training and was trying to think of something else challenging and that's where the idea came from." Ms Bell will begin the ultra marathon at 4am on Thursday and hopes to finish about 30 hours later. So far she's raised $3,075. Donate here https://bit.ly/2Rx0TS0

21.01.2022 CANOLA PHOTOS RISK TO FARMS People looking to travel through WA's farming regions in coming months are being urged to stay out of canola fields. Farmland acro...ss WA's Great Southern and Wheatbelt is turning bright yellow, as canola matures. Jeff Russell from the Department of Primary Industry and Regional Development says visitors have been urged to keep their distance from canola fields during their travels. "You don't know what you're carrying on your car in the way of say weed seeds or soil pests that flick up under the chassis and you could be transporting a pest or a disease," he said.

21.01.2022 GOLDEN GLIMMER OF HOPE! It's been a dark few months for many, but perhaps the canola crops starting to flower across the region can bring some hope! This shot... from Darkan. Picture: Elise Norrish

21.01.2022 IT'S GOING TO GET COLD! There's a very slim chance of snow flurries on Bluff Knoll Saturday night/Sunday morning, but the BoM says it won't be enough to settle on the ground. A cold blast is set to hit the region this weekend with temperatures plummeting to maxima in the low teens.... Some snow flurries may occur about midnight on Saturday / Sunday morning but it will be too windy for it to settle on the ground. There's a chance of thunderstorms and hail across the south coast and Great Southern.

12.01.2022 ALBANY AUTHOR HAS SIGHTS ON SCIENCE A series of books are being published later this year that tell true stories of achievements in science. Called the 'Au...ssie STEM Stars Series', each book is written by an award-winning author and follows the real-life stories of some of Australia's top scientists and inventors. Albany author Dianne Wolfer has written one about the life and achievements of refugee Munjed Al Mederis who became a surgical inventor. 'Life is about making a difference,' Munjed said. "We all have a mission in life, to leave behind a legacy." And he has - he pioneered a new surgery that inserts a titanium implant into the bone, allowing patients with prosthetic limbs to recover a certain level of feeling and greater mobility. The books will be published in September by Wild Dingo Press. Dianne Wolfer

11.01.2022 'WE'RE AMAZED NO ONE WAS KILLED' Police say they are shocked a crash between a road train and four-wheel-drive on Albany Highway didn't end with a fatality. ...Cranbrook Police Station officer in charge Laurie Seaton says the accident, which happened about 15 kilometres north of Cranbrook on Wednesday, had officers preparing for the worst. There were three serious crashes between Wednesday and Thursday each involved heavy vehicles. "What we'd say is just drive to the conditions. If you are driving with another vehicle, give the trucks plenty of room. Be courteous. And obviously the same thing goes for the truck drivers. Just be sensible, be courteous and be patient," Sgt Seaton said.

10.01.2022 #BREAKING: Western Australia is going it alone after being the only state or territory not to agree to a timeframe of lifting coronavirus restrictions by Decemb...er. What do you think, WA? Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the three stage plan, originally aimed to be in force by July, would now aim to be in place by the end of the year in every jurisdiction except WA. Western Australia has set out some very specific circumstances in their state as to why they wont be joining that aspiration at this time, Scott Morrison said. That said, they wish us well, and they will participate in that process, where theyve got things they believe that they can offer and I believe there are many things they can offer in that process. So they are not standing completely separate. Details to come.

09.01.2022 POLICE BLITZ FOR GREAT SOUTHERN You've been warned! Extra police officers from Perth are being deployed to the Great Southern as part of a school holiday ro...ad safety blitz. There will be more traffic police and speed cameras on the road. Sergeant Derek Grimes says there will be a heavy focus on holiday hot spots and drivers using mobile phones while behind the wheel. "Wherever you need to go just plan your trip, plan plenty of time... police will be in force prior to, right through the holidays and after obviously we're aware of where the movements are we just want people to get where they're going and get there nice and safely," he said.

The tall leek orchid has been spotted at Mount Trio for the first time since the late 1990s. Tour guide John Byrne says the 'white china' orchid has also been spotted. 03.01.2022 REGIONAL FLIGHT NUMBERS TO TAKE OFF The number of flights between Perth and some regional WA towns will significantly increase, Regional Express Airlines ha...s announced. From August 31, REX will increase the number of weekly return flights between Perth and Albany from eight to 14. Return services between the capital and Esperance will jump to 13 a week. Further north return trips from Perth to Carnarvon will increase from five to eight a week, and from three to four between Perth and Monkey Mia. REX general manager of network strategy and sales Warrick Lodge said passenger numbers remain significantly lower than before the pandemic, but had increased lately.
