09.01.2022 Sucker season is here! The Harris family from Springvale, Coolac, sold these Valley Vista Poll Dorset-sired 5-6 month old lambs at Wagga Wagga last week for $164. Early growth, quick results!

06.01.2022 From The Rural's ram guide The Scott family have doubled their views, as well as their sheep flock, in 2020. The Valley Vista Poll Dorset stud base at Coolac, N...SW, is now also accompanied by Clearview via Tarcutta, NSW. Clearview adds yet another element to the multi-faceted business, which includes not only the Poll Dorset stud, but a Charolais stud, pregnancy scanning, hay and silage contracting and commercial sheep and cattle. Valley Vista Poll Dorset rams are being used over a number of different Merino bloodlines and hombres composites now running on Clearview in strictly commercial conditions. "Being able to have a bigger-scale commercial side of the business gives us another string in the bow," Andrew Scott said. "By running ewes in different mobs we can see and record growth rate and finishing ability, and down the track we are going to be able to run different sire lines and use these results in our genetic decision making." Pregnancy scanning bodes well for a successful first season at Clearview, with the Merino ewes scanning at 171 per cent, and the homebred composites at 174 per cent. Ewes will run in single or multiple lambing mobs, with the focus turning to best practice management for optimum lamb survival and lamb weaning rates. Andrew said by scanning for a single cycle, as well as for multiples, increases the ease of management considerably. Back at the Poll Dorset stud's home-base in Coolac this year's sale rams are enjoying improved seasonal conditions. "This year we will offer more sale rams at 12-months old, which is in line with both what our clients are chasing and improvement of seasonal management practices at Coolac," Mr Scott said. "The benefit to clients is they are getting access to rams younger, meaning they can tap into our best genetics at an earlier age, as well as being able to use those rams for an extra period over their lifetime. "The 12-month-old rams have been selling well, and because of this, and to make management on-farm easier with less supplementary feeding, we've decreased autumn lambing and increased spring lambing." In recent years stud sires from Springwaters, Tattykeel and Derrynock have been purchased, and Valley Vista's Joe Scott said this had incorporated a good mix of modern phenotype and positive data. "We are noticing new-generation farmers want more information when they purchase rams, and we are aiming for this mix of sires to provide that while maintaining our breeding objectives," he said.

05.01.2022 FROM THE RURAL'S LIVESTOCK FEATURE PAGES: Valley Vista held an open day last week, allowing clients, both new and old, to view this year's sale rams, to be offe...red next Friday October 2. The event also allowed those in attendance to check out the brand new Proway sheep yards at Valley Vista, and hear from industry speakers on relevant topics. Valley Vista's Joe Scott said the day allowed producers to view the rams in a relaxed setting. "It was an opportunity for clients to come look at the rams prior to the sale - next Friday October 2 is a red hot day in the district for Poll Dorset ram sales, with Rene and Springwaters sales also on that day, so it allowed people to have a look at what we have on offer on a spare day that didn't clash," he said. "We also had clients from some distance come along, giving them and others that may be operating on AuctionsPlus on the day a chance to see the rams. "And the rams were penned in more open spaces, rather than small pens, allowing clients to look at them walking around a yard, as well as having on display the 2020 drop ram and ewe lambs and keeper rams, giving people a wider view of where Valley Vista is heading." Industry speakers on the day included Elise Bowen from Sheep Data Management, Jim Meckiff from JM Livestock and Tom Graham, Coolac Vet Services. "We had some great industry speakers come along, with Elise informing clients about the direction Valley Vista genetics was headed," Joe said. "Jim gave a broader overview of Australian Sheep Breeding Values and then Tom spoke about animal health and structural assessment on rams, focusing on the importance of ram health and structure when going into joining ewes from a vets perspective. "With the good season we are having and the money in the market for sheep and lamb producers can invest more money and time in their breeding decisions and make more valued decisions on where they want to go with their own sheep operation."
