20.01.2022 While there are many views on how the term self-care came into use, I find it convincing that self-care was coined in the 1950’s by the medical sector. It was chiefly to encourage institutionalised patients to take care of their basic physical self, hence, self-care. In today’s busy world, self-care is a much revered word in the field of psychology and wellness. Self-care has taken on a whole new facet, than what its original meaning was meant to do. It has evolved to m...ean loving and paying attention to one’s self before one is able to care for others. Self-care is a must for everyone, the young, the aged, from homemakers to CEO’s, the haves, the have nots,the homeless and the jobless. It adds value to self, sets boundaries and goals. All and sundry must practise self-care to maintain balance. Dr. Maya Angelou once said, As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself, the other for helping others. Balance in body, soul and spirit is easier said than done. If it was that easy a task, suicide and depression rates wouldn’t soar as it does in this day and age. I encourage and promote self-care as a means of self-diagnosis and as a self improvement strategy in my counselling sessions. Pick an activity that you’ve never done before, take on the challenge and go for it. Cooking should be a fun activity for the purpose of trial and error- just make sure it’s not for a major event. 19.01.2022 Pedophilia and inappropriate online communication seems to have surged this season. The lockdown has caused masses to rely on online education and online moral support to stay connected. Predators, in return, are preying on women and the young, in the pretext of friendly conversations based on mutual interests. Predators join Facebook groups such as diet groups, religious, farming, orphanages, migration, majority-women groups from 3rd world countries,the list is endless - wi...th supposedly good intentions. Their true colours surface with time. Predators send private friend requests from the group pool and move into private phone numbers quite quickly. Some men send small amounts of pocket money, flowers and gifts to women in impoverished nations such as Philippines, Africa and other parts of Asia in return for sexting, calling at any time and requesting inappropriate pictures. Predators have a common trait-which is lack of respect for women, and they believe that children should be seen and not heard. It’s the most obvious sign of a bully. It is sad that these men don’t stop to think of the long term consequences of their actions. Many of the women from impoverished backgrounds will do anything for a better life, only to discover that they are one of the many numbers in a phone book. In a recent conversation with one such woman, she admittedly knew what she was doing but still went ahead because in her opinion it’s just virtual and she was bored. When you take a closer look, she’s a willing captive, with no moral convictions. She had no intention of meeting her male online friends. One man admitted to being addicted to sending more than 100 selfies of himself to various women, and requesting selfies of them in awkward positions. It gave him the feeling of a Hero, full of fantasies that came from the joys of sexting. Needless to say, his cellphone was carefully guarded. Moral convictions are pivotal in leadership/partnership; it is the parameter in defining integrity and trustworthyness. How can you tell if your online long distance friend is a crook? The first telltale is cheap compliments such as sexy and focussed on body parts. Go with your gut feelings. Listen to your inner voice the first time you hear it. There is no data to accurately measure inappropriate online conduct. Online etiquette/morals is an ignored and forgotten virtue. Is there really a thin line between virtual and reality? Where is this line drawn? If it happens in the mind, is it considered evil? Is the mind part of the body? Where is the defining border? I know the answers, I welcome your input. The frontal lobe is the part of the brain that helps humans organise, plan, pay attention and make conscious decision. Segments of the frontal lobe may mature later in life for people with ADHD. ... While studies show that biological causes are at the root of ADHD, it is interesting that the symptoms become less significant as they grow older. How does this happen? They learn to cope using basic principles of rest, balanced diet, affirmation, physical outdoor activities, social connections and lots of support. Is there a cure for ADHD?
