25.01.2022 Thank you everyone for liking Alexis' cake smash from last week! It was my first cake smash too, so it was all very nerve-wrecking for me too! The best deal was making her birthday cake! Mum felt she would like a farm cake, and surprisingly I have never made a farm cake before. I had to add in all the animals Alexis recognises, and so there was no other design that I relied heavily on other than Little Cherry Cake Company (thank you for the tutorial on the animals!). I only had two nights to finish this cake! Alexis loved the cake so much, she was more keen on digging into this cake than the smash cake. Turns out she loves fondant, and took pleasure in crushing the fondant animals in her hand! I was so proud of her, at least she liked something even though she still isn't too keen on cake. Maybe I'll have to try another year!
24.01.2022 Hope everyone is enjoying a safe and happy Easter, despite all the craziness that is going on around the world and in Australia with the coronavirus pandemic. There has been so much sadness, uncertainty and panic that has brought chaos into everyone's daily lives, and I hope everyone will do their part in bringing this virus to rest soon. I hope you have some chocolate and sweet treats, as I did with my colleagues in pharmacy on Thursday. So much has been talked about the frontline medical workers, but lets not forget the sacrifices of the other workers who make our daily lives; pharmacists, shop assistants, supermarket assistants, janitors, postal workers, delivery workers who aim to maintain some sort of normality. #Staysafe and we'll get through this!
22.01.2022 Come join me, tonight at 7pm Australian EST as I show you how we chill making a "Chill Pill" out of cake! Head on to the Cakeflix page and I'll see you there tonight!
21.01.2022 Happy Lunar New Year to everyone celebrating the Year of the Metal Rat! And with that, I created a topper as part of a sugar collaboration with Year of the Metal Rat express challenge by Bakerswood to mark the occasion! Since it was the year of the Metal Rat, I thought it needs to have gold and a golden-coloured rat! Figurines are still something I need to work on, I hope you like it!
21.01.2022 What a year! I hope that everyone enjoyed themselves over Christmas, and today gets tricky in Melbourne with new COVID-19 cases. Be safe, and keep your loved ones around you safe too! But of course, have yourself a little glass to celebrate. Happy New Year and lets look forward to a better 2021!
21.01.2022 Send me back Saturday - to one of my very first fondant covered cakes! I was browsing through my photos and found this gem of a cake that I covered for my Wilton class many years ago! So much flaws - I had roses with centres that I never covered up so it was like nipples in every rose centres, but I liked my colour schemes. I finished this in June, it was right after autumn and I wanted to have those colours recreated. Do you feel it deserves a remake, since it was made in 2013? Shall I make a live vlog about it so you can see what I do with it?
17.01.2022 Cake smashes are fun! I roped my friend in to agree on a cake smash for her 1 yo Alexis, and she was on board (maybe not the cleaning!). It was going to be themed on a strawberry mochi theme, so we planned it, I made the cake, and even made the little pom poms for the setting (I need more practice haha!). It was a fun day, Alexis needed her princess nap before her big photo sesh. She was a little shy at first, but we got there eventually with lots of encouragement and loved t...he mess! She loved the strawberries, but not so much the cake itself! Strawberry plush: MINISO Cake: @vangohcakes Cake topper: The Style Platform Plump strawberries get a mention (haha) from Sunny Ridge Lanterns from Kmart Australia
17.01.2022 Hello everyone! I owe my dearest friends and fans of my work a big apology for having been silent for many months, due to COVID-19 and the impact it had on my personal well-being, my business and my creativity. It’s upset me greatly that I haven’t been able to run my business the way I envisioned it many years ago, and I will have to assess it for the future. Having said that, I am extremely pleased to be more creative in these difficult times, and geez I’ve forgotten how tir...ing it can be! The end result is most gratifying, watching my colleagues in awe over my little Christmas gnome! He’s all vanilla cake, layered with strawberry jam, and filled with vanilla buttercream and strawberry dried fruit powder from Berry Fresh Australia, then covered in luscious white chocolate ganache. I didn’t want to cut it, strangely enough, but I know he had to be delicious! Have a safe and happy Christmas with loved ones around you!
12.01.2022 This week's order has been special, and a long time coming. But before I showcase the cake, I thought I'd share my experience. A year ago, Sammi contacted me for a wedding cake. She initially was not looking to have a wedding cake, but her then fiancé John would like to have a photo of them cutting a cake. To make it even special, Sammi was hoping to recreate John's parents' wedding cake to which I squealed with delight deep down, as it was my first time attempting a more conventional style to cake decorating. Reimagining a wedding cake back then was tricky, and so the second picture was my sketch. How did I do?
10.01.2022 Here it is! The original cake had way more piped royal icing elements. I simplified the design and more importantly, had the swans made out of fondant as a modern take on the cake. The piped elements were a tribute to the cake, I wasn't the best royal icing piping artist but I think I achieved the same look. The cake was an egg-free chocolate mud cake, filled and covered with chocolate ganache. Thank you so much to Gingerbread Folk that stocks egg-free royal icing pre-mix, which made life so much easier! Congratulations J & S on the big day, and thank you so much again for being gracious and patient with me throughout the year! Extremely touched to hear John kept the swans, as a memento of the day. Swans mate for life, and I hope it will be a good keepsake to mark the beautiful occasion.
08.01.2022 A very big and heartfelt thank you to everyone who took the time to come and watch me at CakeFlix doing my thing, making a Chill Pill out of cake! Thank you so much to Paul and David for having me around, and for such a good cause for everyone homebound due to the corona virus. I couldn't get it all done within the hour, but I have given Paul and David the continuation of the demo, and I myself will be posting the tutorial too in due time - photos have been taken, and videos... have been recorded, so it's time for me to edit and upload it on social media! Anyone wants a chill pill to enjoy at home?
08.01.2022 Psst Psst guess what?
03.01.2022 Hi everyone! How's your weekend been? Following my FB live stream from last weekend, I thought you might like a quick 5-minute snapshot of what went in to creating a chill pill, all out of cake! You can re-watch that live feed on https://bit.ly/2KFaS42 , with the extended part where I finish the cake. Or alternatively, you can watch this little video that I made, and I hope you may pick up a few tips and tricks as well! No narration, but hopefully I will do that in the future!
02.01.2022 So relieved this cake was for last week! Donna came to me looking for some inspiration for her parent's 50th wedding anniversary. As luck would have it, 50th wedding anniversary is also a golden anniversary, and I was glad Donna was looking for a white and gold design as well. I put on some gold leaf as a template for a beautifully stencilled design with piped lace and bas relief rose motifs, adorned with fresh roses and a beautiful mirror gold cake topper by Kelly's Cake Top...pers . Donna also requested cupcakes which were also similarly designed to go with the cake. The cake was a decadent fruit cake with a bit of rum syrup, and the cupcakes were luscious vanilla cupcakes with vanilla meringue buttercream. Happy 50th wedding anniversary, and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves!
