16.01.2022 >> UPFRONT: NEWS & PREVIEWS << Gothic Beauty: Bendigo Art Gallery Current until 10th February... Exclusive to Bendigo Art Gallery, Gothic Beauty: Victorian Notions of Love, Loss and Spirituality draws inspiration from Horace Walpoles groundbreaking novel The Castle of Otranto. When first published in 1764, this landmark book sparked a keen interest in dark, psychological narratives and heightened emotional states, mostly among middle- and upper-class women escaping dull, sheltered lives. By the early 19th century, Gothic literature had become commonplace, and its ideals including feelings of horror and escapism, and the beauty and sublimeness of landscape manifested throughout art and society and continue to endure into modern times. This exhibition draws on works from Bendigo Art Gallerys historical and contemporary collections, the National Gallery of Victoria, State Library Victoria and Museums Victoria, as well as key loans and new works from contemporary artists who maintain a fascination with the Gothic. Key historical works by Aubrey Beardsley, JMW Turner and Herbert Schmalz (namely, his iconic Too Late) will be shown alongside contemporary artists including Penny Byrne, Bill Henson, Sally Smart, Kate Just, Michael Vale, Julia deVille, Jess Johnson, Janet Beckhouse, Jane Burton, Juz Kitson and more. Highlights include a series of significant mourning objects, including an 1882 childs mourning dress, first-edition novels by Jane Austen, Ann Radcliffe and Walpole from the collection of the State Library Victoria, a late-19th-century horse-drawn hearse, and a newly commissioned sound work by Australian composer Zoe Barry. Gothic Beauty: Victorian Notions of Love, Loss and Spirituality is curated by Tansy Curtin and Jessica Bridgfoot and runs until February 10, 2019. 12.01.2022 This Friday VAULT Magazine is launching Issue 29 at Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide. From 6pm join us for this intimate discussion with curator Leigh Robb and artists Mark Valenzuela and Julia Robinson chaired by VAULT Editor Alison Kubler. The discussion will offer a unique preview of what to expect from the 2020 Biennale, entitled Monster Theatres, which invites artists to make visible the monsters of our time. Our editor Alison Kubler says: "What makes Robbs cura...torial theme so relevant now? In 2020 the monsters are no longer under the bed or in the closet, but omnipresent via social media and the tyranny of technology. It has too been a monstrous start to the year with natural disasters and the rise of a terrifying international contagion. With Monster Theatres Robb has brought together a group of provocative artists to create a unique monstrosity if you will, but one that asks us to think about the difference between what we see and know. We will specifically look at the work of Mark Valenzuela, who employs ceramics, video and painting and drawing to examine cultural narratives and identity and create alternative mythologies, and Julia Robinson whose sculpture and installation practice draws upon European folklore, mythology and gothic ritual and the human quest to comprehend the enduring inevitabilities of birth, death and sex. VAULT looks too at the important legacy of the Adelaide Biennial, one of the nations most significant and enduring surveys of contemporary art." 09.01.2022 Art and architecture have long been intertwined, however in recent years we have seen an increased interest in the curation, discussion and dissemination of specifically developed projects that intersect with both disciplines. Increased visibility of inter-disciplinary projects, at both a national and international level, further affirms the growing relevance of this field. Projects produced are often unique, inspiring and unearth new possibilities and considerations mutually... beneficial to both fields. With this comes the possibility of a playful tension where we see the spatial and haptic qualities of contemporary art inflict increasing pressure on the spaces of their display, or where contemporary architecture is more willing than ever to exploit artistic references or operate as a carrier of narrative or meaning. ART + ARCHITECTURE: CONFLICT, CROSSOVER, COLLABORATION is facilitated by architect and scholar Jarrod Haberfield with panellists: Louise Forthun, Esther Stewart, Corbett Lyon, Yhonnie Scarce, Edition Office (Kim Bridgland and Aaron Roberts). This event has been produced by VAULT Magazine in partnership with Lyon Housemuseum Galleries and event chair Jarrod Haberfield.

08.01.2022 We are launching our next issue with our friends TarraWarra Museum of Art on Sunday 28th July, 2 - 4pm Tickets are only $20 which includes a complimentary copy of VAULT Issue 27, a ticket to the exhibition, a panel discussion and drinks and nibbles. We look forward to seeing you there!

06.01.2022 Exhibiting artist Clara Adolphs features in the latest issue of VAULT Magazine! Clara Adolphs paintings stretch between intimacy and distance. Her subjects ar...e often at leisure: sunbaking, swimming, rowing on a lake, with compositions sourced from found photographs. In transforming faded memories into contemporary paintings, Adolphs invites her viewers into a strangers world, where the narrative possibilities can be pushed and pulled as readily as paint across canvas.
