24.01.2022 The Mount Parihaka war memorial commemorates the lives of New Zealand men and women who died in World War II. Approximately 30,000 New Zealanders are buried in 61 countries and in the oceans of the world, including 9,000 New Zealanders who have no known grave. It is a reminder of the sacrifice of the lives of 170 citizens of the Whangarei District and honours all who served.

23.01.2022 This clip is described as "Motorcycle and Car Racing at Tai Tapu". From my limited searching of the web, it was probably taken around after 1948, as the Tai Tapu speedway opened ain that year.

23.01.2022 There are two important war memorials in Wellington - Citizens War memorial at Lambton Quary commemorates the New Zealand dead of World Wars I and II - National War Memorial on Buckle Street commemorates the First World War. The following images portray these two memorials commencing in 1932 through the following two decades.

21.01.2022 Naughty Boys Island, Christchurch had its island status consolidated in the 1950s with the dredging of a new river channel on the Avon River at south New Brighton. The 400m long island was always accessible from the mainland areas surrounding it, albeit through ankle deep mud. Locals say the name of the island appears linked to the 1961 tragedy that saw two boys suffocated when the tunnel they were digging, caved in. Frank Murray, 12, and Peter Leary, 13, were playing o...n the island, digging a cave in the soft sand. The cave collapsed, trapping them under the suffocating sand. Image 1 from 1949 is a WSW view over New Brighton with Tovey St through the centre aligning with the middle of the island - http://www.vcbrowne.com/Detail3.aspx Image 2 from 1952 shows the island in the centre delineated by the Avon River - http://www.vcbrowne.com/Detail3.aspx Image 3 also from 1952 shows the Estuary at full tide, top LHS with Naughty Boys Island and Withells Island Reserve toward the centre. The original New Brighton Pier also appears, prior to its demolition in 1965 - http://www.vcbrowne.com/Detail3.aspx Image 4 from 1978 provides a sweep from New Brighton now without its pier, down to South Brighton, the Estuary and over to Moncks Bay - http://www.vcbrowne.com/Detail3.aspx #vcbrowne #best_newzealandphotos #christchurchnz

20.01.2022 Lest We Forget This is the first of a memorial image series to be posted leading up to Anzac Day. 'Bridge of Remembrance', Christchurch, New Zealand, was originally designed and built in 1923 to mark the sacrifice of those serving in World War 1, has become a place where later conflicts have been commemorated. This stone bridge over the Avon River, had its sculpted triumphal memorial arch structurally damaged in the February 2011 earthquake. It has been progressively restored. Images 1 & 2 - from 1930, lookup the Otakaro-Avon River to Bridge of Remembrance (Cashel St.) Images 3 & 4 - aerial views from from 1956 and 1948.

14.01.2022 Two South Island memorials in park-like surrounds include the cenotaphs in each of Queens Park, Invercargill and Queens Gardens, Dunedin. The first three aerials (1947, 1950, 1967) feature the Dunedin Cenotaph, easily located through it's close proximity to the Octagon in the city's centre. The next three images (1947, 1950, 1955) feature the Invercargill Cenotaph with two being aerials and the last a ground shot.

10.01.2022 New Brighton Pier, Christchurch There have been two New Brighton Piers. The first pier, of wooden construction, opened on 18 January 1894 and was demolished on 12 October 1965. The Christchurch City Libraries Heritage collection shows an early image of an outing at the Pier, c. 1900. http://christchurchcitylibraries.com//Collection/02329.asp Images from the VC Browne collection show New Brighton and surrounds under snow c. 1940 followed by a sunnier image from October 1952... and a closeup from 1951. New Brighton was a favored destination for seaside outings and for many years, the only place in Christchurch where you could shop on Saturdays. By the late 60s the first Pier was gone, as portrayed in the last image from 1969. The 'new' New Brighton Pier was opened in 1997. https://my.christchurchcitylibraries.com/new-brighton-pier/ #vcbrowne

06.01.2022 VC Browne at head of our Christmas table in 1961. Thank you to all our customers and supporters throughout this past year for continuing to value the collection and its unique memories.

06.01.2022 In the early 1940s, V.C. Browne purchased a mechanical 16mm movie camera, which he used through the 40s and 50s to document aspects of his life. We have digitised the approximately 24 rolls of movie film and intend to post them on this Facebook page over time.

04.01.2022 A photograph entitled E. Clark's home, taken around 1939. (PB0905/10) E. Clark was Leonard Ernle Clark whose family owned a large tract of land in the Cashmere area. Charles Clark, the grandfather of Ernle Clark, arrived at Lyttelton in 1856 on the Egmont. In 1862 he bought 16 hectares near the Heathcote River and bounded by Colombo Street and Cashmere Road. He called the property Thorrington and the family owned it until it was sold in 1979. It is now a privately owned day s...pa. The Scoop NZ website says " Ernle Clark (pronounced Ernlee) was farming at Waikari when he sailed to England for a holiday in mid-1936 with his widowed mother and brother who lived there. He had learnt to fly with the Canterbury Aero Club from 1934. While in England he bought himself a single-engine Percival Gull. He decided to fly the plane home for the shearing season and took off in October 1936. He was dubbed the "flying farmer" in Britain and he arrived at Wigram Airfield in November 1936. He was just the second person after Jean Batten to fly solo from England to New Zealand and only the fifth to fly solo across the Tasman." Nearby Ernlea Terrace and the Ernie Clark reserve are named after him. See more

04.01.2022 These images are of Denniston, a bleak coal mining town that is a key piece of NZs history. Whilst the images all show fine days, VC Browne often had to wait several days for a break in the nortoriously poor West Coast weather. The images are from 1947 to 1954 and feature both Denniston township and the incline. The NZ history website has this to say about Denniston:... Hell on earth halfway up The Hill The boosters called it the Eighth Wonder of the World. The poor sods forced to slog away in the mines up The Hill sang a different tune: Damn Denniston Damn the track Damn the way both there and back Damn the wind and damn the weather God damn Denniston altogether. Denniston was also the country's most productive coalfield. Between 1879 and 1967, 13 million tonnes of coal was sent down the incline to Union Steam Ship Company colliers at nearby Westport. It was a technical triumph. The incline plunged precipitously, 548 m in a distance of just 1670 m, with some grades as steep as 1 in 1.25 (80%). 01.01.2022 The Tangiwai disaster occured on Christmas Eve 1953, when the Wellington to Auckland passenger train suddenly plunged into the Whangaehu river at Tangiwai killing 151 people. V.C. Browne happened to be in nearby Taihape for his son's wedding. He grabbed his cameras and drove to the disaster site and took the attached video. A number of large format photographs are also contained on the vcbrowne.com website
