24.01.2022 Oh Blimey! Weve been so absorbed in our copy of the amazing, deep diving new tome RetroSuburbia, we completely forgot the final video in our series! Our sincerest apologies to anyone sitting by their 95% finished wicking bed waiting for this one... hopefully the cheery sign-off helps ease your pain. Now, back to our hammock for the Water chapter! (PS: the contents of this book will help you make your life richer, more diverse and certainly more enjoyable, so just hurry up and nab a copy :) https://www.retrosuburbia.com/book/

24.01.2022 We love hearing about how our clients' go with their wicking conversions... and this is one fabulous setup! Check out the netted orchard, rustic fencing and of course, the hard-to-miss wicking beds (yep there's 10 of them in there!). From our client Cathy: "Here are some photos of our veggie Garden. Thanks for all your help and advice, the wicking beds are fantastic and everything is growing so quickly. After the initial work setting everything up the maintenance and lack of watering is so easy. We have also put two worm towers in each bed which are also working beautifully. Thanks again" #moreworknowlessworklater #wickinglife #eatyourgarden #localorganicfood #knowyourfoodsource #growyourownway #inseperableformandfunction

24.01.2022 ... which naturally leads us to Step 4 - installing the overflow. Not for the faint hearted, this is where you can come undone very quickly. That said, if Jeremy learned to do it (given his penchant for multiple, very strong coffees), anyone can :)

23.01.2022 A pretty darn nice end of year wrap for the VEG Crew (with a few notable absentees). Bring on 2018!

22.01.2022 Quickfire notice! A couple of spots have opened up for our free talk on Wicking Beds tomorrow - Sat 2nd Sept @ 10:30am down @ VEG HQ in Brunswick. Drop us a line if youd like to come along: [email protected] Bring your questions, queries and wondering mind!

22.01.2022 A slightly cheeky repost, but timely in our conversion sequence. Why do all the heavy lifting yourself when you can rope in a friend to help! This should help prevent you spending your whole Saturday emptying your wheelbarrow by the shovel-full, like a novice landscaper... :)

20.01.2022 Alrighty, time for some elbow grease... and origami skills! Fitting that food grade liner is a worthy challenge and dont forget: some time in the sun will help soften the liner and allow the corner folds to form much more easily! For those whove missed the previous posts, this one is step 3 of our new release conversion videos: https://vimeo.com/album/4808324.

18.01.2022 Were busy putting the final touches to our How To conversion instruction videos and clipped this nugget out for a taster... The VEG 2-person barrow lift: guaranteed to work your glutes into shape... well, maybe or maybe not, but at least youll have the bed filled more quickly!

18.01.2022 Now the level is finalised we can trim that riser and tuck in the geotextile fabric blanket. Just in time for this fabulous cooler weather in ole Melbourne town. That also means were nearly done with this series too!

18.01.2022 We love our little workspace...

17.01.2022 Well, no-one wants to dance the wicking bed two-step in this heat, so we might as well move on with our wicking bed conversion instructions - the finer adjustments to getting your levels right. This is key to NOT getting an overly wet soil layer in the bottom of your wicking bed, which will turn stinky (aka anaerobic) and push your soil biology away from your veggies happy place.

17.01.2022 Really looking forward to our free workshop next week - its now booked out (woo hoo for us1) so if you missed nabbing a space (not so woo hoo for you), then drop us a line via [email protected] and if theres enough interest well run another one :) And itll be free too! Hope to see you in the warehouse sometime soon, Jeremy & the Very Edible Gardens Team

17.01.2022 :: Raised bed vs. wicking bed :: Should I build a standard raised bed or invest in converting it to a wicking bed? A valid question, but one that makes us wonder why life has to be so black and white, so divided, so terribly either/or - why not have both! Heres Jeremy walking us through a VEG Wicking Beds conversion which offers that harmonious union of both raised and wicking bed. Difference isnt be about division... its about diversity! Ahhhh, maybe peace on Earth is possible after all!

16.01.2022 Got an existing, C (or L) shaped AND angled bed and want to wick it...? Well, you sure can! With hidden internal divisions you can turn one bed into three (or two with an L shape) and plumb them all separately. Once the soil and mulch go back it it looks the same as before. This nifty (and rather windy) job took us down by the water, so we had to stop and say hi while we were there :)

16.01.2022 The very, very important follow up to part four is part 5... sealing up the hole youve just made. Hopefully not too many of you were sitting with a leaky wicking bed. waiting patiently for us to upload this vid! Happy silicon-ing :)

16.01.2022 A great array of shots from yesterdays fun workshop @ Melton South Community Centre, c/ @Linking Melton South - terrific participants, an excellent host (thanks Trinity!) and some amusing action grabs of Jeremys array of in-workshop expressions: from the "magic-trick-wicking-paper-workshop-timer to the "this much soil & this much reservoir" ratios to the shovelling technique "see, using your quads not your back, you could do it all day!"... all that and the beds are built, planted and growing in the pre-Spring sun! Also, a big shout out to our other team member on the ground, the ever excellent Brendon, who always goes about efficiently getting a helluva lota things done - top shelf work! #wickingbeds #growingyourown #communitygardens #enjoywhatyoudo #dowhatyouenjoy #veryediblegardens

08.01.2022 Nice to see the early Spring colours of Murnong and Chocolate Lily, with some Bulbine coming in fast in the background. #indigenousedibles #wickingbeds #happyfoodhappypeople

07.01.2022 Were looking forward to heading south east in a couple of weekends time to share the wicking bed magic! Book a spot (via the Eventbrite link) if you want to learn more about building and growing in wicking beds.

07.01.2022 :: About our Timber :: Theres few better scents in life than a fresh load of cypress - and thats not just our biased opinion, theres some science to back it up! See further below for how (admittedly Hinoki) cypress fragrances can boost your immune system. Our timber is sourced from end-of-life farm windbreaks, and looks, feels, and smells great! It is a joy to work with and brings many, many years of raised & wicking bed (plus our chook house/compost bay/beehive) magic to ...any space. You can also read more about our timber on the our website: https://www.wickingbeds.com.au/about-us/about-our-timber/ And that aforementioned science exploring cypress aromatics and their health benefits: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2793341/

06.01.2022 Ok, well then its time for the next conversion video: levelling the screenings. In this episode, we inflict sorry - introduce the world to the Wicking Bed Two-Step... a new dance step were pretty sure will inspire a fresh wave of moves, ala the Melbourne Shuffle. Or maybe Gangham style. Hopefully not like the Macarana - no-one needs that in their life again. Either way, take caution before trying this one at home, as it may induce some leaks if your liner isnt as robust as the one featured in this vid.

05.01.2022 Were well privileged to be the first workshop in the new Melbourne Food Hub space, and its coming this Sunday! All about wicking beds, with hands-on IBC conversions to wicking as part of the day, be sure to book your spot and bring your questions, wonderings and misgivings about wicking beds - well aim to address them all! Grab you ticket(s) here: https://www.facebook.com/events/472518666525831/

04.01.2022 Step 2 of our conversion vids... site prep and siting your outlet. Some handy hints on what to watch out for when installing your wicking bed, and where best to install the outlet/overflow.

04.01.2022 Still one of our favourite and prettiest installations of VEG wicking beds at the East Brunswick Village display suite on Nicholson Street. It shows how multiple heights and the use of our our dressed and oiled seat tops can really add an extra layer of functionality and aesthetics to an arrangement of garden beds. #cupressusmacrocarpa #goldencypress #montereycypress #ethicaltimber #localtimber #wickingbeds #gardenbeds #raisedgardenbeds #vegetablegardens #veggiebeds... #permaculture #permaculturegarden #gardenlife #organicgardening #gardening #urbangardens #urbangardening #urbanagriculture #urbanfoodsystems #foodsecurity #growfood #growyourownfood #ediblegardens #veryediblegardens #veg #melbourne

03.01.2022 Another quick vid, this time the re-adjustment for your inlet. Were now past the halfway point, and gaining speed towards a fully finished, fabo new wicking bed!

02.01.2022 Heres a short-n-sweet one for your Friday - Step 6, placing the inlet. Nearly time for some heavy lifting!

01.01.2022 Jeremy gives us the lowdown on wicking beds, how and why to use them along with answering some of your pertinent questions. For more further readings and info head to wickingbeds.com.au after the feed!

01.01.2022 Ohh yeah, looking forward to bringing the wicking love to the new Melbourne Food Hub site in a couple of weeks time. Well be converting some IBCs on the day, and chatting through the ins and outs of wicking beds, of course! Be sure to nab your tix for the session via the link below, and bring your questions and your basket to stock up on all the Farmers Market goodies while youre there! :) Hope the see you on the 29th! Jeremy and the VEG Team.

01.01.2022 So, you may have heard about wicking beds, but perhaps aint sure if theyre for you or not... to quote a very favourite film of Jeremys "..allow me to lend a machete to your intellectual thicket." Voila: our most honest and up-to-date pros and cons for wicking beds! https://www.wickingbeds.com.au/about-wicking-beds/ "Let us level with you here. Yeah, we sell these things. And we love them. But, were not interested in selling them to anyone where its not the right solut...ion. Jeremy (our sterling Wicking Beds Manager) needs some days off to practice his drumming anyway. So this is our truest, honestest, bestest list of the formidable pros, and some realistic cons of wicking beds. So read on, to help decide whether or not wicking beds are the right choice for you." *PS: anyone who can name that film - without using google!- will surely be entitled to some serious respect and perhaps a small prize, which is likely to be whatever we can dig out of the back of the prizes cupboard :)

01.01.2022 Take one rough sketch to ensure your design thoughts are sound, add in a concept model, mix it all with one very excellent Human Being and voila... we have a new, improved movable* wicking bed! Built as display beds here at Very Edible Gardens HQ, well be trialling some no-dig soil building, a dedicated Australian food plants bed, along with a vermi-compost come-wicking bed setup... but more on that later! Big thanks to Brendon Farlow for his efforts, and if you havent checked out his works via Inspired Abundance Edible Garden Design you really should! *movable via forklift, pallet truck, or possibly with some industro-strength castors;
