25.01.2022 Happy National Volunteers Week to each and every one of Velmas Pets As Therapy volunteers! We deeply appreciate your dedicated commitment and all the amazing work you do to enhance the lives of the frail, vulnerable and challenged in our community; with your darling fur child. The need to "give something back whilst working with our fur child" is one of the most mentioned reasons for people wanting to volunteer with Velmas.... This week is National Volunteer Week, the annual celebration of Australias almost 6 million formal volunteers and many others who volunteer informally across the country. Volunteering is an inextricable part of Australias national identity with 5.8 million formal volunteers donating 734 million hours of time to the community. Australias voluntary contributions yield a 450 per cent return for every dollar invested. Nationally this is estimated to be a staggering annual economic and social contribution of $290 billion. A recent Australian Charities Report shows that there has been an increase in the number of volunteers supporting the activities of charities by 400,000, with 3.3 million people volunteering across the charitable sector. Another report stated that if not for all the volunteers working in Aged Care, the Aged Care sector would close down. I am enormously proud of each and every one of our people and pet volunteers. Happy National Volunteer Week! Velma

23.01.2022 We are all very sad that we can't visit our usual nursing homes and hospitals right now, so we put together a video including most of our people and pet volunteers, isolating at home, so our clients can still enjoy our pets. Video goes for 13 minutes.

23.01.2022 Maggie is seeking a new loving home

22.01.2022 Calling all experienced cat lovers, Sydney, NSW! 18 year old grieving Lucy urgently needs a temporary or permanent home. She is 18 years old and super sweet, affectionate and sleeps a lot.... Her elderly human companion is in hospital, and now sadly will not be going home. Just had a blood test to determine her health. All is well except she has a mild infection for which shes on medication and the vet said shes be right as rain in about a month. The family say she is sweet natured and doing very well for her years. Has a healthy appetite but not demanding in any other way. De-sexed and uses a kitty litter tray. She needs some help with grooming but no other health problems. One of our volunteers offered her a home but Lucy freaked out with her dog that was barking at her. Lucy is probably used to a quiet life with no other pets. If you are an experienced cat person who can offer her compassion and love, and a quiet, temporary or permanent home please let us know ASAP. The Cat Protection Society said they may be able to offer her a place in 2-6 months. She is currently at Summer Hill, NSW.

22.01.2022 Donations and loving home wanted for little Maggie Maggie was originally taken to the Small Animal Specialist Hospital on the central coast after being hit by a car. She had head trauma and a broken leg. The veterinarian hospital where she was taken cared for Maggie for a very long time nursing her back to health. Denise At Paws www.deniseatpaws.com.au agreed to take Maggie on for rehoming but before they could do that she required surgery to put her broken leg back tog...Continue reading

21.01.2022 An important message from one of our Pets As Therapy visitor trainers Never use extendable dog leads to walk your dog! Tonight I was walking Tyrion when we went around a corner and met a border collie at the full length of his 4 metre extension lead. He went into hunting posture, I braced myself and pulled Tyrion behind me. I managed to grab the other dogs lead near the collar when he attacked. I held him off while his humans caught up, but it was hard work managing two dogs.... I was glad he didnt attack me or get hold of Tyrion. You have no control of a dog on an extended lead. I have seen a dog hit by a car when it bolted onto a road on an extension lead. Dont get me started on the injuries they can cause to people and dogs, either.

21.01.2022 Coronavirus and pets as therapy Heres a pic of Coco and I visiting a nursing home before the coronavirus. We havent been able to offer our pets as therapy service since the first week in March. My heart goes out to all the people in nursing homes, hospitals and in residential care that are used to their regular furry friend visits. Seeing the huge and immediate smiles on the faces makes it clear just how much people adore pets and how much a visiting pet means to them. Weve put together a video to sent to our clients of most of our volunteers so they can still enjoy seeing our pets, and what they are doing during the coronavirus. Watch this space for that. Are there any other pets as therapy groups out there? Have you come up with any creative ways to offer pet therapy at this time of isolation and social distancing?

21.01.2022 Greetings fabulous visiting team! Yes we offer amazing benefits on each and every Pets As Therapy visit but it always makes me deeply happy when our customers go out of their way to thank us for our great work. I was delighted to receive the following email today sent to Michele our Pets As Therapy visitor from a nursing home she visited yesterday from Kitty the wonder pony and team. Kitty the pony supported by Michele, Danielle and Rinaldo had to travel over an hour to get t...o this facility but knew that the residents and staff would deeply appreciate their visit. Clearly they did. Check out their email below. ________________________________________ Sent: Monday, 25 March 2019 9:41 AM Cc: [email protected] Subject: Thank You! Thank you! Good morning Michele, I just wanted to thank you from my heart for your visit yesterday and also a huge thank you to Velma for allowing me the privilege of having Kitty visit my dear residents. I am so grateful to you all! I am just over the moon. The residents who are able are still talking about Kittys visit today. You are such a beautiful person Michele and I can feel your love for your animals and your love and compassion for others. You and your team are a credit to Velmas Pets as Therapy Program and I am so excited that Velma has you on board. 15.01.2022 Merry Christmas from Holly... retired Velma's Pets As Therapy visitor!

14.01.2022 Did you used to volunteer with Velmas Pets As Therapy? If so, WE WANT YOU to help us celebrate our 20th anniversary. It was 20 years a go when I first decided that it was time someone was taking pets into nursing homes and hospitals and that person was going to be me! Back then Pets As Therapy was brand news to lots of facilities and it took a good deal of convincing management to allow access to pets. However, I knew how important my darling pets had been to my own recovery... when I was bed bound and I was determined to get pets to others, who were also incapacitated and missing the comfort and joys of a furry friend. Since then, it has been our current and retired Pets As Therapy visitors that have made VPAT the success it is today. Im so very proud of our high standards and protocols, the benefits we offer and Im so very proud of each one of you. It will be wonderful to for you to be there at the celebrations. Date: Saturday 6th April Address: Hornsby When you RSVP Ill give you the full address and details. Looking forward to seeing you there. Thanking you all. Its wonderful working with you. Velma

14.01.2022 Merlin and Danielle bringing hope and joy to Deise Velma's Pets As Therapy is so proud of Danielle and Merlin and send our love and best wishes to Deise. English language teacher Deise Palmieri concedes that before a visit from a fluffy ragdoll cat, her life seemed to be heading downhill rapidly. ... An accomplished woman fluent in multiple languages, Deise, 66, is undergoing palliative care at Greenwich Hospital. Deise was diagnosed with an aggressive neck and facial cancer in February 2019. Deise’s journey with squamous cell cancer has changed her life, taking away basic joys like speaking, eating and her ability to work. Surgical interventions have left her in unimaginable discomfort. Palliative care at Greenwich Hospital is helping to manage these symptoms and then in late June, Merlin the cat dropped by her hospital room. The visit brightened her world. By just lying on her bed and being there for a stroke and a cuddle, Merlin with his big blue eyes touched her heart. The connection was instant. Merlin and her handler Danielle Lawson have since returned several times. There has also been a visit from a tabby named Teddy and his handler Monique Linssen. Deise said: Merlin gave me hope and the will to live. The cats have been amazing! The cat visits, organised through Velma’s Pets As Therapy, are carefully managed in accordance with infection control guidelines. The handlers must pass training in animal control. Velma Harris, founder and owner of Velma’s Pets As Therapy, said her business, which can also provide dogs, rabbits and even a pony, is intended to bring pleasure to people in aged care and hospitals. Staff with HammondCare’s Dreams Project, which facilitates dreams of palliative care patients at Greenwich Hospital, asked Deise to nominate a wish they could fulfil. All Deise wanted was to spend time with cats. Deise said she wanted to spend time with cats as it took her back to happy times raising a kitten she found abandoned behind a Rio grocery store. That cat, named Mia, had black-and-white colouring like a tuxedo suit. For someone who has always lived reliant on my brain, I can now live with my heart. Merlin gave me that, Deise said. "To feel the unconditional love of a cat is precious!" Hospital staff caring for Deise observed that faced with her illness, she had taken to her bed and had become withdrawn. After the cats came to visit, she has found a new will to live. For the full article from HammondCare July 2020 newsletter https://www.hammond.com.au//merlin-the-cat-is-giving-deise
