24.01.2022 For many females commencing a strength training program, there is a real fear of ‘bulking up’. The term ‘bulking up’ generally conjures up putting on significant weight, size or muscle. Truth of the matter is that putting on any reasonable muscle mass for females is a process that requires complete consistency, dedication, hard work, lots of food and lifting heavy weights over a long period of time. If you see females who have unusually ‘bulky muscles’ there is a good chan...ce there is a little chemical help along the way, particularly in the sport of body building. For the average female who is getting into strength training for a stronger, more toned body, fear not! You won’t bulk up. Given that many females who fear this often have weight or body fat to lose. I would be more concerned about ‘bulking’ with body fat which is far more ‘bulky’ than lean toned muscle. Need help getting your head and body around this? #Gold @Velocityhealthandfitness ‘consistency over time, it’s all about you’! See more

24.01.2022 Whist many are reflecting on 2020 as a bad year, it is important to look at all the many positives of the year past. If you dig a little, there are many positive aspects to 2020. The year past has taught me many lessons of humility, integrity and being grateful for the simple joys in life. I have witnessed many breakthroughs and break downs. We have been fortunate to work with so many people invested in positive change and continue to do so. In the end, our health both physical and mental, are paramount. It is never too late to change. It is never too late to start and it is never too late to reach out for help. What will 2021 look like for you? Will you make the change? #Gold, consistency over time It’s all about you!

24.01.2022 Weight loss is a massive business. There are enough diets, shakes and promises to re-sink the Titanic! Yet, look around and you will see obesity as the ‘other’ pandemic. In theory, losing weight is simple; calories in being less than calories out or in other words controlling ‘energy balance’. For the vast majority, this is more complicated than it need be. Like most things, we humans overthink way too much and end up more confused than ever! I’ve had thousands of conve...rsations with people over the many years about why they can’t lose weight and how they are doing everything right to no avail.. then there are those who swear they ‘eat well’ but can’t lose weight! The main problems I note with most people not losing weight is through mindless eating, snacking and not having a clear plan for daily eating habits. Add to this inconsistent exercise and you have a recipe for maintenance at best or a steady increase in body fat over time. If you are serious about getting in shape, improving your health and dropping some weight, then you have to be super clear with your end goal first and foremost. Whilst a goal is imperative, you also need a strategic plan. How are you going to go about this? If you are like most people, you will hit speed humps. You will lose focus and be tempted to revert to poor habits. This is why enlisting help is the most ideal way forward. Creating new habits, making different choices and looking longer term are all crucial to positive change. If you focus on short term ‘quick fixes’, you will hit a road block sooner rather than later and end up in worse shape than before. The best plan is the one you can adhere to for the long road ahead. #Gold, consistency over time it’s all about you! See more

24.01.2022 Compare the pair. We’ve all heard this quote from a well-known advert. The trouble is that too many of us place comparison on ourselves with others. Whilst being a very common scenario, is a recipe for disaster especially when it comes to our bodies. I know men and women well into their 60’s who still play comparison games with others in regards to body shape, fitness and what they look like, let alone many other aspects of their lives This is not only exhausting but dow...n right ridiculous. Each of us are so unique, yet so many aspire to look like the next person. Take for instance eyebrow shapes right now. Why does ‘almost’ every female on the planet have to copy something that only suits a very small % of the female population? Trends come and go but somewhere, there is a wanting to look like someone else. Add to this social media in particular, Instagram where everyone tries to emulate the next. Seriously, what is wrong with being yourself and making the most of what you have? With a great diet and exercise plan, every person can make significant changes and improvements. I’m with Oscar Wilde if indeed he did come up with this famous quote, be yourself, everyone else is taken. #Gold, consistency over time. It’s all about you! See more

23.01.2022 With only one week until Christmas, a little reminder to keep focused on health. It is easy at this time of the year to overindulge just for the sake of it. Unfortunately, those over-indulgences lead to poor habits, weight gain, fatigue and a plethora of physical and mental ailments. By all means enjoy the festivities but be mindful not to become a Christmas slug. #Gold, consistency over time. it’s all about you!

20.01.2022 The Greek physician Hippocrates also known as the father of medicine, is believed to have made the famous quote, Let food be thy medicine and let medicine be thy food. If he truly did suggest this, he was well ahead of his time given this quote was around 400 BC. Fast forward to the 21st century, what have we learned? Or should I say, what have we forgotten? Food is essential to life. Yet with current agricultural practices, food processing, major manufacturing and mod...ern day ‘franken foods’ we are not doing our selves or our health any favours. Take a look around in the community, it is often unusual to see people who are of a ‘normal’ or ‘acceptable’ weight. Humans are on more medications than ever and our supermarkets are loaded with highly refined packaged foods that are addictive beyond belief. I am a big believer that food is either our greatest form of medicine or our slowest form of poison. Food can have a huge affect on gut health for one. The connection with our gut and brain health is intricate and research is growing constantly. Blood sugars, nutrient absorption and behaviour are all heavily influenced by what we eat. The key to getting it right is to keep it super simple. If it grows, is unrefined, has the least amount of human interference then eat it. If it is refined, in a packet, has an ingredients list and certainly if you don’t know what all the ingredients are then put it back on the shelf. For many this may sound a challenge. Like anything, when you do it for a while, it’s downright easy. #Gold #velocityhealthandfitness; Consistency over time it’s all about you! See more

19.01.2022 Fruit is often touted as ‘natures fast food’ and rightly so! Fruit is easy to carry and prepare and being on the sweet side, tastes amazing. Fruit generally speaking, is higher in sugar than other whole foods, which begs the question if it is indeed good for you? We all know excessive sugar intake is not good for us, however, the type of sugar found naturally in fruits is ‘fructose’ which is a simple ‘ketonic monosaccharide found in many plants, where it is often bonded to ...glucose to form the disaccharide sucrose. Sounds complicated doesn’t it? Well, it’s not really. It is a natural sugar found in fruits and some root vegetables. There is a misconception however that fruit is bad. It is commonly thought because fruit contains sugar, it must be bad for us. Fruit has fibre which slows down the digestive process, creating less of an impact on the liver. For the average person, it would be very difficult to eat the amount of fruit that could start to create a problem. Take into consideration pure sugar from highly refined foods and in particular soft drinks, this is where sugar becomes a health issue due to direct absorption affecting blood sugars and more. Add to this, refined foods and soft drinks contain zero nutritional value in comparison to fruit which is loaded with fibre, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Bottom line, if you are eliminating fruit because you think the sugar content is too high. take a good look at the rest of your diet and don’t deny yourself one on natures amazing fast foods! #Gold at Velocity health and fitness. 19.01.2022 If you are stuck in a rut doing the same thing expecting a different result, if you are carrying too much weight for your body to function well, if you hate what you see in the mirror and dislike how your feel day in day out, if you are eating foods that cause you pain, bloating and fatigue, if you are doing destructive stuff to your body and not paying attention, if you want a different result, outcome or other, then NOW is the time to START. I have these conversations with... humans every single day. You have a CHOICE. You don’t have to feel, look or behave this way. You CAN lose the weight, feel, function and look amazing. HOWEVER, you MUST be prepared to DO THE WORK. It’s not easy but it’s worth it. Choose the long game. Get in shape physically and your mental health will follow. Eat for health and your body will thank you. The time will pass anyway. what you do with that time will determine all the above. #Gold #Velocityhealthandfitness consistency over timeit’s all about you! See more

19.01.2022 In theory, getting in shape is simple. Move more, eat less, get adequate sleep. Wash, rinse, repeat. If only! I hear you say. For most people, being in shape refers to being of an ideal weight, of reasonable fitness, healthy and strong. The truth is that a large percentage of humans don’t come anywhere near this ‘ideal’. Another truth is that in order to improve the shape our bodies are in, we must first master getting our mindset in shape. Everything starts in your h...ead. The way we perceive ourselves, our drive, choice and behaviours all start within our mindset. If you are currently out of shape physically, perhaps it is a good time to start with some mental training, spring cleaning and reorganising. Most often, this is really difficult to do alone. It is ideal to work with a coach or professional to set goals, create a plan and have strategies in place if you truly want lasting change. The alternative is pretty much staying stuck in the same place The bottom line is, if you want to master your body, you must first master your mind. #Gold, consistency over time. It’s all about you. 17.01.2022 How much should I exercise? This is a question we are asked daily. The answer is simple. If you want to be in good physical and mental shape, the do something every single day. By this, I mean do a mixture of exercise. Don’t overthink it, just move! I look at it this way; there are 24 hours in one day and 168 hours in one week. One hour of exercise daily is a mere 7 hours out of 168 hours! Not much is it? How much TV does the average person watch daily? How much time... does the average adult spend on social media per day? I’ve looked at the statistics and each adds up to a lot more than 7 hours per week. So next time you say you don’t have time. that’s just a BS excuse. We are each granted the same time in a day, a week and a month. Everyone is busy. Everyone has ‘stuff’ in their lives and everyone has a choice to either do it or not. Remember, it’s your body, your life and your decision. If you want to be in great shape, like everyone, you have to work at it day in day out. Need help? 15.01.2022 When we hear about ‘addiction’, most of us think about alcohol or drugs, but the truth is humans can be addicted to so many ‘things’. Some of the common addictions we do see are gambling, gaming, shopping, sex, exercise and of course FOOD. When you look around, it is common and acceptable to see people who are over-weight. If you’ve noticed, people are getting a LOT bigger and society is accommodating for this by making bigger furniture, wheel chairs, beds, clothing sizes ...and more. Then there is food. Our supermarkets are selling more by way of larger packs, pre-prepared and packaged items and making it cheaper and more enticing. Many people claim to have a problem losing weight. This is not merely because people are lazy, although many are! The real reason people have issues losing and keeping weight off is because the vast majority have a very addictive behaviour around food. Addiction is a complex condition and a disease of the brain that is manifested by an intense focus on consuming or using a substance or habit to a point where it takes over your life. Food just happens to be the culprit for a huge number of our population. If you think about it, we are conditioned by food from day one. When we cry or are upset, we are fed, when we do something well, we are rewarded by food. As life goes on, food becomes a treat, a reward and a sense of comfort. Little wonder adults still comfort eat! Addictions are more readily created when we are young which is why so many have food issues. Dopamine, which is one of our brain’s neurotransmitters is simply a ‘feel good’ chemical that makes humans more impulsive. Dopamine is also involved in processing ‘rewards’ in the brain which encourage us to opt for the instant gratification. Is it safe to assume most humans are addicted to food? I would say yes. Some definitely more than others. Like any addiction, it is important to acknowledge you have a problem or an addiction. Treatment is varied and there is so much anyone can do to over-come addictive habits. If food is holding you back and controlling your life seek help. This is such an issue for so many and will hold you back. Food is a joy, a pleasure and essential. We humans can live without other addictive substances such as alcohol, drugs and cigarettes, however, we need to learn to have a strong and healthy relationship with food. The irony is, it is not about the food. Food is a ‘tool’ that is used to smother feelings and emotions. Good old dopamine to the rescue and let’s get the quick fix to make everything feel better.. #Gold, consistency over time. it’s all about you! See more

13.01.2022 I use and refer to the mantra ‘consistency over time’ in regards to ‘results’ because I believe this is key to achieving results across the board let alone, fitness and health goals. If your goal looks like weight loss or improvements in body composition, fitness, strength and your overall health, then it is what you do every single day over an extended period of time that counts. One of the biggest issues I see is people stopping and starting, not being consistent and expe...cting an outcome that doesn’t match the effort and consistency of work to the plan. If you are serious about getting #results, then look at not only your GOAL but the PLAN to get you there and the road ahead to continue your success. Be prepared to do the work and continue doing the work if you want something better. #Gold, consistency over time it’s all about you! See more

13.01.2022 When training in the gym, most people think about lifting weights to get more muscle. This is only one aspect to training depending of course the gym you train at. When we work with our #Gold members, we work out finite goals and work through a thorough screening process to ensure we can piece together a thorough plan for each individual. One of the key areas we work on is correct movement and improving upon this. Two components to correct movement are mobility and flexib...ility. Many will misinterpret the difference between them. Mobility is the ability of a joint to move actively through a range of motion which is very different to flexibility which is the ability of a muscle or muscle groups to lengthen passively through a range of motion. Mobility also takes into account how not only the soft tissue around a joint move, but how well and far the joint will move within its capsule. An important element to strength training is to work on mobility and flexibility at the same time. Many people make the mistake of lifting heavy weights with poor movement patterns which in turn can lead to some nasty injuries long term. #Gold, consistency over time it’s all about you! See more

10.01.2022 The art of movement has been lost. Look around and you will see people hunched over, limping, rounded shoulders, slouching and generally looking very uncomfortable. This is everywhere and unfortunately; the vast majority are accepting this as what happens as we age. This couldn’t be further from the truth! Like anything, if you stop using it, you will lose it and this includes our ability to move freely. As we age, there will most certainly be more wear and tear, however..., we must continue to work on our bodies, our health and how we look, feel and function. In the gym is a great example. Many people come to us to ‘get in better shape’. More often than not, we have to start with bear basics of human biomechanics and movement. The truth is that most people don’t move well at all. Most people are in some sort of pain and most people put up with this. Until they make the smart decision to do something about it. The moral of the story is to firstly decide to change what is not working. Enlist help. We can help you but you must be prepared to step up, do the work and continue doing the work. After all, if you don’t look after your body, where else will you live? #Gold @Velocityhealthandfitness ‘consistency over time, it’s all about you’! See more

08.01.2022 I have conversations with people all day, every day about getting in shape. The content of conversation can range from what is the best training plan or process? How do I strengthen my back? I need to eat better I want to get ‘fitter’, lose weight or some other statement around all of the above. The thing is, there is no ‘best way’, there is no ‘one way’ to do any and making statements about wanting to get fitter, lose weight or strengthening some body part is useless un...less you firstly get super clear about what it is you truly want. 08.01.2022 Protein is one of the most important pieces of the nutrition puzzle when working on improving one’s diet. Protein comes from the Greek word, proteios, meaning ‘primary’ or ‘holding first place’. The word protein was coned by Dutch chemist Gerard Johann Mulder in 1838. Protein is made up of over 20 Amino acids and is of primary importance for human health by way of building trillions of cells on a daily basis as only one of its’ amazing uses. Yet, many people don’t eat eno...ugh of this incredibly powerful food. To get enough protein into your diet will depend on many factors such as your age, size, activity level and more. With this said, there are formulas and ways to work this out quite easily. Designing an eating plan to suit an individual is a work of art given likes, dislikes and some of the above factors. As there are many ideal and available protein foods, it is not hard to get good quality protein into your diet. Think lean meats, poultry, all seafood, eggs and some of the legume family along with some dairy choices. Need help? 07.01.2022 One of the biggest factors I believe people don’t get the fitness, weight loss and health goals they set out for is because of a big LACK OF ORGANISATION. I see this every single day and I harp on about it every single day. Truth is, if you want something different than what you currently have such as a fitter, healthier and leaner body, then guess what? You have to do something different and that means you need to get ORGANISED. Once you set your goal, get crystal clear as to what is required. Then you have to cross your T’s and dot your I’s. this requires ORGANISATION. Is it comfortable? No. Is it easy? No. Is it worth it? Absolutely! Need help? 06.01.2022 If you have ever trained effectively and consistently in a gym and developed some strength and fitness, you will know how good that feels. After our closure earlier this year due to COVID, many people continued to ‘exercise’ but didn’t get the full value from weights due to the gym being closed for 12 weeks. One of the most common comments upon re-opening was how ‘weak’ and deconditioned so many people felt. This was a catalyst for many to set some new goals and to work to...ward getting back to more acceptable levels of strength and fitness. As a female, I love feeling strong physically. I can’t imagine not training or being fit. For me, it is a way of life; a choice and a privilege. I see too many people make excuses to not exercise or to use their bodies in a positive way. I witnessed last week in the carpark of a local supermarket a plethora of overweight, unfit and unhealthy-looking people of all ages. If you stop and look around, you will see people limping, carrying themselves badly and carrying way too much weight. Don’t be a statistic rather, be pro-active. I’ve said it a thousand times but it is the truth, if you don’t look after your body, where else will you live? #Gold, consistency over time.it’s all about you! See more

05.01.2022 Last week I ran into someone I hadn’t seen in several years. She is in her early 50’s and I was surprised to see how much weight she had gained since I saw her last. As we chatted, we discussed her work. She has a slightly herniated lumbar disc which prevents her from doing her job effectively. She then went on to say how she has seen a surgeon to discuss surgery. Something else she mentioned was her blood pressure medication! I observed she would need to lose 20kg as a... minimum to get to a more ‘acceptable’ weight. Because we were in a social setting, I couldn’t give her my advice nor thoughts because she wasn’t asking nor paying me to do so! Someone else in our circle made comment after said female with back issue had left. The comment was, surely her doctor should tell her to lose weight instead of prescribing blood pressure medication and offering surgery. This is such a common misconception. Most medical professionals DO recommend losing weight. However, from a doctor’s perspective, all they can do is advise and inform regarding weight loss. Doctors don’t have magic wands. At some point, the person in the doctor’s office has to take personal RESPONSIBILITY. Doctors have to prescribe to keep people alive. It is up to the individual to make the changes. Surgery is invasive. It should be last resort for the majority of disc issues. Blood pressure can be lowered through exercise and diet. And being at a ‘normal’ healthy weight WILL solve a lot of health issues. Moral of the story, by all means go to the doctor and keep on top of health issues but for goodness sake, step up and take personal responsibility especially for the things you CAN change. #Gold, consistency over timeit’s all about you. 04.01.2022 We have enquiries every single day in relation to our training programs. Usually by the time someone has summoned enough enthusiasm and ‘motivation’ to make contact, they are already of the mindset to ‘do something’. Change can be and is daunting for many, particularly when it comes to changing habits, our bodies and our lifestyle. We also talk to a large number of people who really NEED to make some changes due to injuries, health issues and bad lifestyle habits. For exa...mple, we talk to people staring down the barrel of type 2 Diabetes, many females on the border line if not already with osteoporosis, people facing surgery for joint replacements and more. These examples are more often than not, reversable and easily rectified through quality progressive exercise and strength programming, dietary and lifestyle changes. We work with all of the above every single day with incredible results. Yet, many people are not willing to spend some money or the time or effort to work on creating a positive outcome. In fact, for many, it is easier to take a drug, blame everything else and say it’s too expensive. The question is, how much is your health actually worth? Are you willing to give up spending money on a habit or ‘things’ that are currently contributing to your poor outcome? The choice can lead you on a different path or further down the one already onthe choice is yours. #Gold, consistency over time, it’s all about you! See more

01.01.2022 If you are not exercising because of an injury, there is a very good chance you are doing your body and your injury a great disservice. It is rare that we see a new training client present with zero injuries or niggles. The key is to be correctly assessed and have a qualified fitness professional work with you one on one. There are many ‘tools in the toolbox’ in regards to programming, strength prehab and rehab exercises. Need help? 01.01.2022 It’s common to see ‘middle aged’ men with skinny legs and fat guts which is often ‘accepted’ as the norm. Well, it may well be common but it sure isn’t normal! Like most bodily issues, the above comes from lifestyle choices. Unfortunately for many males and females for that matter, as we age there is this odd acceptance that we will suffer the ‘middle age spread’ as a part of the process. Certainly, as we age there are changes in hormonal status for both males and females ...but this is not reason enough to accept your body gaining disproportionate weight. Menopause in women is blamed for a lot of physical and emotional changes and so too is the male version, andropause where testosterone levels decline. For both menopause and andropause, weight gain, mood swings, reduced bone density and muscle weakness are only a few of the symptoms. The great news is that you don’t have to live with those symptoms IF you make positive changes to your lifestyle. In fact, you can improve your body at any age and be in fabulous shape. Of course, the main anecdote is diet and exercise. Throw in some good sleep, laughter and positivity and you will be well on the way to changing your body for the long haul. Like anything however, it requires effort and consistency over time. Need help? Contact us today about our #Gold program, ‘consistency over timeit’s all about you! See more
