17.01.2022 #RedMyLips Day 2 of 30: I wear RED.... to remind others to give way No matter how you dealt with your own sexual assault (or think you may deal with it), we all need to remember to give way and accept each others healing/grieving process. What is right for one is not right for all and there is no right or wrong way to handle the aftermath of trauma. To insinuate or express there is only perpetuates victim shaming further. When speaking about or to victims of sexual assault, p...lease be kind and supportive. Advice isn't always required. Sometimes to be heard and believed is enough. 16.01.2022 #RedMyLips Day 4 of 30: I wear RED.... so we can feel free to be ourselves Rape and sexual violence is not about sex it's about power. The use of cosmetics and fashion is never an invitation to rape. Nor an excuse to blame the victim for the attack. Often those of us that experience assault retreat from the world. One of the ways we do this is to dress and act differently thinking it may protect us from further abuse. Yet all it does is make us fearful and strips us of the fr...eedom of self expression. You do not have to agree with another's choice of attire or look in order to respect their right to choose how they wish to present themselves. 08.01.2022 Day 3 of 30: I wear RED.... to show how words hurt If you could see your words cut through flesh and cause it to bleed would you still say it?... I was once at a work colleague's farewell drinks when the man of the hour came up to me, in front of a room full of people, and pulled my top out so he could look down my shirt. Stunned and shocked at what was happening I took a second to react. As I pushed him away I laughed nervously looking around at the audience, not wanting to cause a bigger scene. He told me and everyone else he had always wanted to do that. I wanted to vomit while some laughed and cheered. A few minutes later I was able to pull this upstanding family man aside to tell him how disgusted I was with his behaviour. He apologised and told me he was feeling very drunk. I asked him to please never to do that to anyone ever again and then I left. When I returned to the office news of the event had preceded me. Another colleague, who did not attend the farewell, came over to my desk to see how I was holding up. I was so grateful that at least one person didn't think what happened was right. I started telling him how awful it was when another male colleague, overhearing our conversation, yelled out "What are you talking about. You loved it! You laughed when he did it". I was dumb founded. Initially I couldn't believe that nobody came to my aid during the incident and now I had to defend MY actions! WTF! The moral of this story is I don't think this guy set out to hurt me, call me a liar or degrade me but he didn't stop to consider his words would do exactly that. Please don't be an asshat. Consider the impact your words could have on others. Help me raise awareness and to speak out against sexual violence and victim blaming.
