22.01.2022 Our role = implementing exercise interventions for people with musculoskeletal injuries, medical conditions, or disabilities. Pretty much any conditions with an evidence base that exercise can improve it . I focus solely on the musculoskeletal side because 1) I'm endlessly passionate about it! 2) There is a huge demand for it 3) I really just love it and taking people on that journey to surpassing what they ever thought they were capable of! . People come to me injured, o...r in pain, or simply hitting roadblocks being slow to progress in their training. I'm not assessing to diagnose ... I'm NOT here to slap a label on you about your problem nor do I want to i.e. "bad hip", "bursitis" to every shoulder pain lol (to name a few of my pet hates ) . I'm assessing to observe movement and function, yes potentially in relation to where the pain is being felt, but for the sake of FUNCTION and what is fuelling the problem... not to tell them in big words the kind of condition they may have. Is there a place for diagnostics? Of course! Is it with me? No it isn't! It worries me the dooming approach I hear about from patients after poor experiences with health professionals and rehab... imo it can be too disempowering for the patient who walks away believing they are fucked, with no real solutions . 99.99% of the time, when you get shit working well... pain goes away. When you get shit functioning well, specific to the demand of the HUMAN in front of you... that is what makes us resilient to mitigate injuries. When you start working the right shit for the right person.. shit goes well . Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is insanity! Not improving? Something needs to change! . Hell yes to a test/retest and progressive rehabilitative approach that focuses on function... not on pain. Pain fucks off by itself when function is taken care of. Because active problems can only be solved by active solutions! . So throw your heat pack and massage ball away because it's not curing anything... 21.01.2022 It's been such a pleasure working with aerialist and dance teacher @lilmissloz We first started working together in December last year where she came to me with a hamstrings injury. Not only have we worked to pain-free but she is killing it with her flex and strength progression . I am so passionate about helping people exceed their pre-injury capacity. I feel there is a major gap that is overlooked between getting "rehabbed"/"treated" to pain-free vs. bridging the gap be...tween pain-free and the physical DEMAND of aerials/pole-dancing. We are like yup just doing my exercises to get "stronger" now, then later - yup gotta really make sure I put in the work on my flexibility exercises now so I don't stiffen up ... as if our strength and flexibility don't have a DIRECT correlation with each other Flexibility and strength ARE NOT in opposi...tion to each other - they are mutually beneficial . In fact, true mobility is the range of motion your BRAIN can actively control. Therefore MOBILITY = FLEXIBILITY + STRENGTH . 16.01.2022 Fitness industry: "Neutral spine" Me: ... I want to tell you a story pleaseeee!!!!! . Not one position or range of motion can be labelled as "bad" or "dangerous". There is no global right or wrong! .... My pet hate = when aerialists/dancers present with a chronic injury and their healthcare professionals tell them something like: "oh yea this pain is because of pole/dancing because the range is so extreme you have overloaded it and that's why you're in pain".... Even when the patient is treated to feel better he/she walks away 1) Dis-empowered , 2) Believing that so long as they continue their sport they will always trigger this pain. THIS IS SO FAR FROM THE TRUTH! . Not only have many clients come to me with this kind of story - but it happened to myself as a young ballet dancer! I had a chronic pain through the top of my big toe. The health pro I saw massaged it, and explained how I had "degeneration" and it was from all the pressure of pointe work. Over time "if you keep dancing it will just get worse", but we can "try to keep it under control"..... Dudes I was 14!!! That experience is burned in my memories and all I remember thinking is: "Well I'm definitely going to keep dancing so gotta bite that bullet!! And will probs also need a walking stick by the time I'm 40" . This is one of the many reasons why I am so passionate about helping people on their journeys to feel empowered and learn the right approach to rehab, train, and tap into the amazing movement potential that our human body is truly capable of, when given the right inputs! . Things are NOT black and white. I have trained the ranges of motion to have full ownership of the above move, and therefore it is not dangerous and can be performed safely. If you sit 8 hrs a day and only do bodybuilding workouts then yes, attempting this would be a horrendous idea! . SPECIFICITY - if we assess what ranges we can currently control, our limitations, and implement strategies to expand range and strength in those particular areas SPECIFIC to the DEMANDS - then the body can adapt to create that movement efficiently. 14.01.2022 DO YOU HAVE TIGHT HAMMYS?? PART 1 of 3 . Why are ISOMETRICS vital as we train to open up new ranges of motion . It is the SAFEST place to start when trying to increase flexibility, due to the even tension across the joint during controlled isometric loading... . It helps us overcome our stretch reflex threshold at that range i.e. stretch tolerance, to enable us to move into new ranges safely . High intensity of the efforts = more nervous system inputs = progressive strength and tissue adaptations over time in that specific range of motion . . SOOOO SQUEEZEEEEEE away! This kind of training is suprisingly tiring when done correctly - despite not even moving . There are multiple factors that contribute to tight hamstrings and restricted mobility! Staring straight ahead at our work computers and down at our phones? ... Maybe a quarter turn when someone calls your name? When you think about the range of motion we ACTUALLY use on a daily basis.... it kinda makes sense why our necks freak out after floorwork tricks right!? B...ecause we are suddenly putting them into end-range positions WE HAVEN'T BEEN USING! . Use it or lose it guys! That's where Controlled Articular Rotations or "CARs" come to great use! TRY THIS to move your neck DAILY and this is also a GREAT warm-up for preparing your neck pre-pole class! . 13.01.2022 STRETCHING MYTH #1 RELAXING THE GLUTES DURING BACK-FLEX . There are so many different cues around about contortion/flex training and there seems to be a persisting myth that as we try to push our end-range back extension that we should relax the glutes (i.e. our bums) to reduce the pressure in the lower spine Have you guys heard that one before?? Today, I'd like to debunk that myth! And here's why: 1) We actually want to ENGAGE the glute muscles during back flex esp. w...hen one or both of our hips are in full extension e.g. full bridges, needlescales ... This actually REDUCES the pressure on our lower back through active involvement and stabilisation from the hips . 2) The attachments of our gluteal muscles mean that it's anatomically impossible for these muscles to physically increase the pressure on the lower spine . 3) If you actually do feel the sensation of increased low back pressure when you try to squeeze the glutes - that is an indication that you're in the habit of compensating with your lower back muscles. Time to tune up your glute motor control i.e. 'brain to buns' connection . 12.01.2022 When is static stretching appropriate? Is static stretching before training "bad"? Alot of the time things aren't simply "good" or "bad" to do. The answer is usually that it depends! . Ask yourself this Do you already have the cold mobility for the joint positions required for your training session? (I.e. can your joint move here passively when you aren't warmed up?) . If YES, pre-training static stretching is not an efficient use of your time! Go straight to active work... and warmups in those ranges so you can focus your time and energy on building more strength and control of the range YOU ALREADY HAVE! . If NO, static stretch first to temporarily open up more range, then reinforce with active work in those ranges. TRY THIS variation to the neck CARs exercise I showed you in my last neck post and move it daily! This is also a great choice for warming up your neck pre-pole class! . Technique tips: . Slow and controlled, brace core, high tension - imagine moving your head through mud... Make sure you don't miss out the rotation part of the circle i.e. saying "no" action of the head Before you extend/start pointing your chin upwards you MUST retract the chin backward like a double-chin action - this enables a more efficient neck extension action. If you leave your head poking forward and lift your chin, you will be forcing extension mainly through our mid cervical spine instead of properly utilising our whole neck to produce the action . PS. One of the most common factors involved when you experience wrist discomfort when training handstands (or even during pushups/high planks) is due to a lack of end range wrist extension strength and stability - which is what we are working on over my next few posts! . Tips FYI . We are using the floor to passively position our wrist in our end-range - the more we shift the shoulder forward over the hand with the elbow straight - the further we go into the range.... we are NOT trying to lean/press our bodyweight into the hand for this exercise . Two important points to consider with any move you are struggling with . 1 There are physical pre-requisites required to be able to efficiently achieve each pole move. For example with the ballerina move we need to have enough control and range in a) hip external rotation b) upper back rotation c) shoulder extension (this above exercise engages all 3!)... . 2 Commonly and especially with this move - it is not actually a lack of strength/mobility it can often be a technical error that you are not yet fully understanding the skill i.e. requiring more coaching and practice! (listen out to the cues your instructor tells you! ) . Common technical errors : . Not leaning torso forward and not sticking your tailbone out enough makes it IMPOSSIBLE to hook the underneath leg . But a VERY common issue when it comes to being ...restricted by the shoulder specifically in these transitions, is due to a lack of end range strength in shoulder external rotation and shoulder flexion together (i.e. controlling arm overhead with the elbow pointing forward/hand backward) .
