20.01.2022 Is it Ethically Made and Sustainable? Ask the tough questions! Here are three key questions to ask when considering whether or not to make a purchase: Firstly where was the item made? If the answer is vague or hard to find, it can be assumed that there is a reason for it (hiding dodgy or unethical manufacturing). More fashion brands are starting to be transparent and accountable for the production of their clothing, which is fantastic. These are the ones you want to support... so keep an eye out for them. Secondly, ask yourself do I really need it? Consider what you already own, and whether or not the piece of clothing will become a staple you can wear for years, or be out of fashion by the end of the season. Do you think youll wear it at least 30 times? If not, time to reconsider. Thirdly, is it good quality? Be willing to fork out extra dollars if you know the piece youre buying is going to go the distance. Clothing should never be considered disposable (however do note: biodegradable fashion is currently in the works) as there are epic amounts currently being thrown into landfill. Seek out natural fibres and fabrics, especially pieces that have been crafted to last. Source: http://www.unmaterialgirl.com/

18.01.2022 Research shows that Australians are leading the way in ethical and eco-conscious shopping, with online searches for ‘sustainable clothing’ up by 110% and ‘ethical clothing’ up by 67% in the first three months of 2020. These results highlight that Aussie consumers are continuing to recognise the importance of those who are making our clothes and that their rights and safety must be upheld and protected, and that we must change our fast fashion habits.

15.01.2022 Today there are so many fast fashion companies producing low-quality clothes that become unfashionable, wear out, and lose shape easily to force you to keep buying new clothes. Clothes are being worn much less and discarded quicker than ever before. As a result, about 350,000 tonnes of used clothing goes to landfill. I believe nowadays, vegan and ethical fashion can be easy to find if you search for it, but ethical, vegan and sustainable...can be a bit more tricky, thats why when I started Velvety! I strived to create a one-stop shop where ethical consumers could ensure they were making the best decisions when it came to respecting animals, the planet, and people. https://velvety.com.au//5-ethical-fashion-brands-you-can-s

14.01.2022 How do you wash your clothing? Here some tips from our supplier @keeperdenim Here are our top 5 tips on how to wash your clothes sustainably 1 Do full loads the washing machine uses the same amount of energy no matter how full it is, so youll do less loads and save more energy!... 2 Turn your clothes inside out this will help to protect the quality and the colour of the outside of the garment. 3 Use cold water - to reduce the energy needed to heat the water, benefiting the environment. 4 Opt for eco-friendly, natural detergents free from artificial additives this will help to reduce water pollution and your skin will love it too! 5 Air dry when possible this will use a lot less energy than a dryer. You can also preserve the quality of your clothes as air drying is a gentler option than putting them in a dryer. Which of these do you do? #keeperdenim See more

12.01.2022 Because the fashion police dont police fashion where it matters, its up to us as consumers to develop a working understanding of what sort of things constitute sustainable fashion brands. Sustainable fashion refers to fabrics derived from eco-friendly resources, such as sustainably grown fibre, crops or recycled materials. It also refers to how these fabrics are made. One sustainable fabric we love is Organic cotton. Organic cotton is grown without pesticides or synthet...ic chemicals. Organic cotton is safer for farmers to grow and it wont damage the soil. Additionally, a lot of organic cotton farms use rainwater to feed their crop which saves a lot of water! It is important to note that brands can market their items as organic without any certification, so when buying organic cotton garments, make sure they are GOTS certified. Global Organic Textile Standard products must be at least 95% organic fibre and, aside from being one of the most well-known certificates for fabric throughout the world, it is also one of the most difficult certificates to acquire. This is because producers must meet requirements throughout the manufacturing process, beyond just the crops themselves. When you buy something that is GOTS certified, you know you can trust the brand and the product quality. https://velvety.com.au//guide-to-vegan-and-sustainable-fab

10.01.2022 Producing an item of Ethical Clothing includes design, labour, and materials. Ethical fashion is kind to the planet and people every step of the way, from seed to garment. Ethical fashion considers the impact of using materials to make clothing, from linen and cotton to polyester and denim, as each fabric has a different impact on the environment. Choosing the lesser impact is what ethical fashion is all about. www.velvety.com.au

06.01.2022 Did you know, there are more pairs of jeans on the planet than there are people? Thats a lot of denim. And denim is made from cotton, which means thats millions of litres of water spent on making jeans Some things to consider when buying sustainable denim are: Go for jeans made using closed-loop water systems (saves 1000s of gallons of water)... Go for jeans that promote circularity, such as using a percentage of recycled fibres, or ones that can be mended or sent back for recycling Avoid stonewash (is often created using toxic chemicals, see the film Riverblue for more info) Avoid rips and tears (can deteriorate more quickly than regular denim, as noted in the Fixing Fashion Report) Have only one or two pairs of jeans, and wear the hell out of them! 02.01.2022 "There must be a complete economic and social systems change, where we place value on work and pay what it is worth. We call on brands to slow down production, pay workers fairly, and improve health and safety conditions for everyone who is part of the industry. Beyond minimum wage, we need to push for a realistic living wage. This is the only way forward." - @fash_rev

01.01.2022 Cork comes from cork oak trees, and it is just about as good as it gets in terms of Sustainable materials. Unlike most natural sources, a cork oak tree is not cut down in order to harvest the cork. Plus, each time the cork is harvested, the tree absorbs more CO2 to aid in the barks regeneration process. Regularly harvested cork trees store three to five times more CO2 than those left unharvested and help to keep our air clean. While cork is commonly used for wine bottles, it... also makes for a fantastic fabric! Cork is flexible, water-resistant and can be just as strong as leather. Thamon, uses thin cork shavings to produce this beautiful backpack, and sustainably sourced birch, lotus and sal leaves for the side pockets. Sustainably harvested Increases CO2 absorption Water-resistant Super strong Biodegradable https://velvety.com.au//guide-to-vegan-and-sustainable-fab
