24.01.2022 Not very sure whens the next time in my life-time that Ill be able to look at the results of a 75 year research project so this is definitely worth sharing!! If we have the benefit of hindsight, what would we be investing in our lives right now to keep us healthy and happy throughout our life-time? Is it what we are striving for at the moment? The Harvard study of adult development tracks the lives of 724 men (from Bostons poorest neighbourhood and from Harvard Colleg...e) from 1938. 20.01.2022 One of the conditions that can benefit from treatment by a lymphoedema practitioner is lipoedema. Its different as it involves the pathological deposit of fats in legs and sometimes arms. They can be quite painful in the areas affected. In the later stages if unmanaged, they can go on to develop lipolymphoedema. Read more about lipoedema here. Incidentally its also lipoedema awareness month in June.
19.01.2022 Video analysis of ACL injuries in professional soccer players!! Findings summarised in the paper are as follow: Indirect contact injuries are equally as prevalent as non-contact injuries in professional Italian male football.... Four main situational patterns were present: (1) pressing/tackling, (2) tackled, (3) regaining balance after kicking and (4) landing from a jump. ACL injuries from landing after heading are under-represented in Italian professional male footballers. ACL injuries are more prevalent at the start of the match (first half) than at the end of the match (second half). 17.01.2022 An informative post from Rehab Science May 6 on exercise and Arthritis. Moderate exercise and strengthening of the muscles of the lower limbs not only strengthen the muscles and reduce impact on the joints. This research shows that it can be beneficial for the cartilage as well. & ... Relatively recent research demonstrating a mechanism through which exercise may work to reduce the risk of osteoarthritis. This study fits nicely with others showing that moderate exercise appears to have a protective effect on joint cartilage. In this study (cited below), researchers subjected chondrocytes (cartilage cells) to mechanical loading, which activated the HDAC6 protein and lead to a suppression of inflammatory signaling. Often times, I run into people who worry that exercise will damage their joints. Hopefully, this research will change this belief and help others understand that loading their joints through moderate doses of exercise can positively influence cartilage health and reduce the risk of developing arthritis. Reference: Fu S, et al. Mechanical loading inhibits cartilage inflammatory signalling via an HDAC6 and IFT-dependent mechanism regulating primary cilia elongation. Osteoarthritis Cartilage. 2019.
