23.01.2022 A rare print with an impressive title: "Noblemen's and Gentlemen's Trains of Running Horses, Etc. Taking Their Exercise up the Warren Hill, East of Newmarket" p...ublished John Bodger, artist unknown. As described in Volume I of 'A Century and a Half of Amateur Driving' by A. B. Shone, it depicts the Prince of Wales (later George IV) with his high flyer phaeton and six watching the exercise of his own string of horses and those of the Dukes of Bedford and Grafton, and the Earls of Grosvenor, Clermont, Barrymore and Derby on Newmarket Heath. Quiet little Newmarket just peeps forth in the hollow, in the center of that restless panorama; and in the far distance the Ely Minster turrets cut the cloudless sky, and struggle manfully for preeminence with Highflyer Hall. On the left is the back of a second high flyer phaeton driven by Lord Barrymore(Lord Barrymore later famously died in 1793 while driving his gig from an improperly stored musket which fired and killed him instantly) with Lady Ann Barrymore taking to Mr. Fox, who is on horseback. Incidentally the latter's horse has had his ears clipped, which was thought to improve the appearance of hunters but which fortunately soon died out. We can perhaps smile at the two extra postillion-driven horses in the Prince's phaeton for maybe Sir George Lade (the Prince's 'Driving Tutor') was killing two birds with one stone - humoring his Royal patron that his position demanded a phaeton and six yet knowing full well that a cool headed postillion on the lead horses would prevent any major disaster. Yet for all our smiles it is certain that the Royal phaeton crossed the Heath at a good spanking pace and perhaps occasionally at a full gallop, for the Prince was a great lover of speed.

21.01.2022 This is an original April 23, 1936 photo showing a number of Wheatley Stable horses exercising. After the lead pony the horses are: Magamel, Seabiscuit, Inverma...rk, Teufel, Snark and White Cockade. It would be later this year that Seabiscuit was sold to Charles Howard. And as they say the rest is history. See more

03.01.2022 This is an original winner’s circle photo of the famous 1944 Triple Dead Heat in the Carter Handicap. I believe it is the first Triple Dead Heat in a Stakes Rac...e in North America. Starting from the rail: Brownie with Eric Guerin up; next is Bossuet ridden by Jimmy Stout and last is Wait A Bit and Gayle Smith. Out of all three Wait A Bit was the most successful horse. He defeated Princequillo in the 1944 Longstreet Handicap and Stymie in the 1945 Yonkers Handicap. At stud his daughter Sailing Home is the second dam of Bold Reasoning, the sire of Seattle Slew. Bossuet defeated the 1942 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Shut Out in the 1944 Voter Handicap. He was also the sire of Satsuma who was the dam of Champion Cicada. Brownie’s best race was the 1944 Bay Shore Handicap where he defeated Occupation who had defeated Count Fleet.
