25.01.2022 Reminiscing on this delightful shoot from almost a year ago! #timeflieswhenyourehavingfun Why do we do bridal / collaborative shoots? Well, they're dang good fun for starters. ... They're a chance to dream up something beautiful without limitations (and as creatives thats what we live for). But most importantly they're a chance to show brides and grooms the possibilities available to them. Take this particular shoot - I wanted to show that your wedding cake doesn't have to be all white, or be topped with roses, or covered in lace to be elegant and beautiful. In fact, your cake is a great vessel to carry across the theme of your day, or make a big statement in the reception. And I totally get it if, unlike me, you've not been studying weddings since you were 12 () and you didn't know there was an option beyond white lace and roses.... because working with you and piecing together all the bits of your day as inspiration for your cake design is what I live for!

22.01.2022 Because love isnt cancelled.... this sweet little cake was created last weekend for a beautiful couple who werent going to let a pandemic stop them from getting married! I was told the bride would be carrying sunflowers (now if they arent just the happiest flower I dont know what is) and otherwise given creative freedom with this cake. And it turned out to be a little bit wonderful! Hand painted with @sweetsticksau with inspo taken from a sketch found on Pinterest. ... Just a reminder brides to think outside the box... most of the time thats how the magic happens!

Ive posted a little flashback on the Verlena cakes journey in my stories. Viewing will guarantee a few giggles (looking back on my early work) but hopefully it also shows how far Ive come over the last ten or so years of honing my craft. This cake is a perfect example of continuous learning- it was my first attempt at etching a pat...tern into a cake, at rice paper flowers (which have such an elegant, ethereal look with their translucent petals, especially when touched with a little gold) and delicate wafer paper leaves. 19.01.2022 Wedding cakes never even get eaten anyway... Um... maybe if its a dry, boring pre mix mud cake with no love. I can 100% assure you that the cake WILL get eaten if it tastes bloody AMAZING (doesnt matter how busy guests are on the dance floor, or how many beverages have been consumed... ) ... 09.01.2022 It finally feels like the clouds are lifting, doesnt it? I feel like the whole community has let out a sigh of relief this week with news of the borders reopening, restrictions on gatherings starting to lift and the significant decrease in cases throughout WA. It would certainly appear that engaged couples have the confidence to start planning their weddings again, with availability for the end of this year quickly filling up. With lots of new couples, its time for anothe...r tasting day. But Im curious to know how youd like to see this unfold, in light of recent events. Ive always thought the opportunity to sit down together and chat all things wedding while you sample some of my most popular flavours really important to the process. For us it means no friends and family around, no long table lunch in our garden, and no little cousins to show Ella the ropes when it comes to her first Easter egg hunt. 09.01.2022 Ganache is my new favourite cake medium. Sure, Ive been using it forever as a base for fondant, but Im loving yet as a finish in its own right. 04.01.2022 The world is a pretty scary place right now. Not just fear of this virus, although no doubt were right to be concerned about it, but everything that is happening as a flow on effect of it. Yesterday, like so many others, I lost majority of my bookings for the next six months when the ban on gatherings over 100pax came into play. As someone who has spent the last 10+ years in hospitality and events the news had me in tears. Ill be fine, because caking is still my side hustl...e and I have a wonderful partner who provides for our family. But so many people and businesses I know are going to struggle to recover from this. Some small businesses are not going to. So I implore you... I BEG you... if you are in a position to do so, SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESS. (The ironic thing is, while small business struggle to stay afloat Australians are striping the supermarket and big chain stores bare... believe me, the big guys are going to be just fine ) - If you are frustrated because you cant get the things you need to make dinner tonight... order takeaway from one of the many restaurants or catering companies who are doing such a great job of pivoting their business and are now offering home deliveries. - If you know someone in self isolation... send them a bunch of beautiful flowers from your local florist to brighten their day. - Instead of rushing to the supermarkets out of fear the Easter bunny wont find your children this year... order something extra special from a chocolatier or patisserie. - Mothers Day will be here before we know it... think outside the box for gifts and purchase from a local creative. - Feeling sad because your big birthday bash is cancelled... you can still celebrate with a cake! Any caker would be happy to create a mini cake suitable for a couple of people. Im sure there are so many more ways we can support small business. If we all just make one purchase that we wouldnt have normally maybe, just maybe, we can help them stay afloat during this really, really shitty time. Youve not done all this before, and you DONT know that you want a double barrel, three tier ganache cake with stencilled details and texture (unless caking is your side hobby that is) when you ask for a quote My goal is to make this process as easy and stress free as possible for you. How? Glad you asked... I have a detailed guide book available for anyone whod like it that walks you through the cake process, some common terminology, and the options... available to you. Its a great place to start. Once weve chatting and I have an understanding of your wedding I provide scale sketches of your cake so you dont have to imagine what it will look like. I provide champagne cake tastings for every couple because I dont believe you should purchase a cake for your most important day without first having tasted it! I coordinate with your venue and florist to discuss delivery, set up, serving guide etc so that you dont have to be the middle man... aint no bride got time for that! I provide you, and your venue, a detailed document the week before the wedding which details exactly how to cut the cake to get the correct number of portions. 03.01.2022 COMMUNITY. The only downside (is it though?? ) to photographing the Easter dessert box for you all is that I end up with a TONNE of leftovers. So this time, I packed up the cake and left them on the doorstep of our neighbours with a little note. Neighbours who I intended to properly introduce myself to when we first moved in... two years ago... but until now had only waved and shouted hellos to when we were in our front yards. ... In the last week weve had toilet paper and kitchen towel appear on our back step, notes dropped in our postbox exchanging phone numbers and offers of help if its needed, and unspoken communication with the new family down the street by way of teddies in our window. I think- I hope- that were all going to come out of this changed for the better. A little kinder, a little more thoughtful, more aware of what we spend our money on and where our food comes from. And, I really really hope, holding on to this renewed sense of community. If nothing else, I now have willing recipients for all of my recipe trials and excess goodies! 03.01.2022 Candied Easter egg anyone?? I had the most wonderful plans to make beautiful little personalised eggs to sit at the place setting of every child coming to our Easter lunch. Obviously those lunch plans are on hold until a lighter time, and so the candied eggs that Id been daydreaming about were not really needed. I promise you, its not a hard process, and you dont need to be as extra as me with your decorations ... the kiddos will have a heap of fun attacking their eggs with icing and sprinkles and food colouring! Most ingredients you should already have in your pantry, and although its a bit of a lengthy process that just means itll keep your kids entertained for longer!
