25.01.2022 Habits for working from home. So are you a morning person or an evening person? No matter which one you are, you should focus on doing your most important work during your most productive time! This is especially important when developing a new routine at home where you may have more distractions. I often witness countless morning people come into work early, yet they squander their productive time on checking emails and sorting their filing. Then when the dreaded "3'o'cloc...k slump" comes along, they are forcing themselves to focus on meeting deadlines and finalising complex reports. Same for evening people- don't set important meetings in the morning when you are half asleep! It's funny how people create a mindset of ticking the easy wins off their list in the morning, yet it's the best time for morning people to get the meaty stuff done. I often call this "cocaine habits". People get a hit from doing the easy things first. But in the long run, it's bad for you. What bad productivity habits will you be tackling while working from home? #leadership #mindset #management

25.01.2022 Do you regulate procrastination, distractions, and temptations in order to get the job done? Common excuses and how to fix them: Excuse 1: There were other things I needed to do Fix: Prioritise, make a schedule, and stick to it with no exceptions. Adjust the schedule over days until you get the right balance.... Excuse 2: I needed a break Fix: Everyone needs breaks. It's important to withstand the temptation to get lost in breaks and never come back. Plan your breaks and know when they will end. Rest properly during the break so you have the energy to come back. What are your procrastination tips? #success #goals #mindset

25.01.2022 Guess what? This month I celebrate 3 years since starting my own consulting practice Vermelho! I remember having doubts at the beginning. But one thing I promised myself was to follow my own advice about resilience, dealing with change, and mindset. I can't say it was easy all the time, but I do know that proper goal setting, and chipping away at a goal one bit at a time really works! I have worked with National Companies and Organisations, developed CEO's and Executive Leaders, worked on projects big and small, and spoken at loads of events. What a fun journey it has been! And I am so excited to keep going! Thanks for sharing some of that journey with me! #practice #consultant #coach

25.01.2022 Late last year I posted part one of a blog called Mindset Matters. It talks about a growth mindset in the workplace. Here's part two with a few tips on how you can implement it at work and with your teams. I've also included a list of resources, podcasts and books you may find useful. Is a growth mindset something you've actively thought about using for boosting team success? ... #mindset #resilience #teams #leadership https://www.vermelho.com.au/bl/post/Mindset-Matters-Part-2/

25.01.2022 How often I see people shy away from providing feedback, especially to their leaders or peers. Yet, feedback is an underestimated and powerful force. We can choose to use feedback constructively with words of encouragement, or destructively with words of despair. Feedback has the power to help, harm, hinder, humiliate or humble. I am grateful for all feedback. I am especially grateful when it encourages me to keep going. Thank you Kelli for these words. ... Do you mine your team, colleagues, and customers for feedback? #humanresources #leadership #management

23.01.2022 Fear of change is common. This fear is why people turn down new challenges, take too long to capitalise on opportunities and stay in their comfort zones. Having the right mindset for change can dramatically increase your teams receptiveness to the change. As a leader, your role is to help your team navigate the fear of change. Here are five ways you can do that. https://www.vermelho.com.au//5-ways-to-help-your-team-navi... #changeleadership #changemanagement #humanresources

22.01.2022 This week I'm exploring leadership habits. What do you think is the most important mindset habit for a leader to have? The first things that come to my mind are: Listening before speaking... Reframing negative thoughts Realistic optimism Coaching not telling I'd love to hear your thoughts on this one. What's your number one choice? #leadership #mindset #humanresources

22.01.2022 I am so grateful for the messages I have been receiving asking how I am and checking in. I have become used to working from home and alone over 3 years. But it took a 12 months to adjust! I know how tough it is for those who have had this imposed on them without it being their choice. I urge you to check in with you teams beyond outputs. Have conversations that connect you. Here are some questions to help you your team feel grounded in a time of chaos. They build resilience,... help people adjust to change and help encourage positive mindsets. Be sure to share YOUR responses too. Be vulnerable. Build trust. It's so important right now. 1. What are we grateful for today? 2. Have we connected with someone today who may be isolated? 3. Should we do something kind for someone? 4. Who needs help with something? What can we do to pitch in? 5. What expectations of normal can we let go of? 6. What activities restore us? Are we being diligent in our pursuit of these? 7. What matters most to you right now? Remember that on the other side of the video conference, email and text, there is still a human soul. Find those souls and connect with them. What questions are you asking to help you connect with your team at this time? #leadership #hr #mindset

22.01.2022 Some good news in the midst of all the angst and worry. My book has arrived and is ready for launch! I was going to have a lovely launch party. But that's not possible with social distancing. I was going to launch the book the day before I ran my first ultra-marathon. But that isn't going ahead either. ... I was going to offer face to face workshops with the book, but that's out the window for now too. How fitting then that my book is about setting goals and developing mindset fitness habits so that you can achieve them without burning yourself out. Paging through has reminded me that even though the launch of this book is NOT going to plan, it is still as meaningful as ever. In fact, even more so now. Mindset, resilience and goal setting is on everyone's mind! And I am glad that I am following my own mindset workouts to get through. If you want to: *Enhance your ability to remain flexible and adaptable *Increase your strength through challenging situations *Improve the composition of your thoughts to maintain perspective *Boost your resilience and endurance Then put this book on your social distancing reading list. Join my book list to be notified of where to access and when. Link in comments. #leadershipdevelopment #mindset #hr

19.01.2022 Do you shut ideas down to prove you're the smartest? Or do you allow your team to be empowered enough to provide you with the ideas? Sometimes I see teams with a leader who insists on knowing all the answers or has to say something in every meeting to she they know what they are talking about. As a leader, if you are always trying to prove that you're the smartest person in the room, you may soon find yourself obsolete. Traditionally, executives earned their positions by bei...ng the smartest people in the room. Now leadership is about finding the smartest ideas in the room. A great read to reflect on. http://ow.ly/bKlO50yqZOk

17.01.2022 My book will be launched on the 23rd April 2020! Join me for a virtual launch party right here on Facebook. All you need to do is come to the event page at the event time and get access to book giveaways, book readings, and mindset workouts with Luisa. Mark your calendars - Thursday 23rd April 4:30pm Australian Western Standard Time. Please check your corresponding time zone. ... I hope you can come to share in the fun and celebrate with me (even if we do pop a champagne virtually). I'll be there! Please share with family and friends - all are welcome and the more the merrier!

16.01.2022 Do you feel threatened by successful people? I find it funny how there's a natural instinct in some people to tear successful people down. Like they are traitors or something. Some people I know avoid successful people. Others get annoyed by them. What do you think causes that? ... But here's something to think about. Instead of feeling threatened by other peoples success, could a more healthy approach be to want to learn from them? How do they do what they do? What is their mindset like? What contributes to their success? What makes them resilient? Don't fly away from successful people (like the birds in this shot on my walk this morning). #success #mindset #leadership #resilience

15.01.2022 Reflect on this. We all experience pain at some point. We get stressed over deadlines, face setbacks and failures. Experience physical pain or grief. There's no controlling painful experiences and we cannot avoid them. We CAN control how we react or respond to them. Pain comes and goes. Suffering is optional. ... Suffering is "the second arrow". Pain was the first. As a leader, do you help ease the pain of failure with your team? Or you find yourself shooting a second arrow? #mindset #resilience #grit

14.01.2022 An important post for me. Work-life has completely changed for everyone. People are social distancing themselves. Events are cancelled. So many of my clients are reporting they are feeling helpless and hopeless right now! But here's my tip for all of you if you are feeling a loss of control and like you don't know how to feel better. Do something nice for someone today. Even if it's a small thing. It really does help you feel connected and gives you hope. Some aged care faci...lities are asking for pen pals to write to the elderly who feel particularly isolated. Ring them up and ask how you can help! There are people in communities who don't have access to technology! They would be very vulnerable to loneliness right now. Call your local community centre and ask if they have phone trees to ring people and check-in. Call a friend or colleague and ask them how you can help them today. Are you able to go to the grocery store for someone who may need to be isolated due to compromised immunity? This is more than just feeling good or virtue signalling about how good you are. Staying connected is very much needed for resilience right now. You can distance yourself physically but make sure you don't disconnect! Here's what I am going to do: I am giving away one free coaching session to three people as my way of helping. It can be business coaching or mindset coaching. DM me if you want some time with me to help you work through some challenges! (All done virtually of course) or tag someone you know who may need it more than you and this is your way of helping them! Be nice first.

13.01.2022 What top 5 things do you want to achieve this year? Now here's the real question: Which of those 5 would make the most difference to you, your business or your life if you achieved it today?... Focus on THAT goal.

12.01.2022 Not long now until my book "The Mindset Fitness Workout" is launched. A big theme explored is setting goals and finding the willpower and way power to get there. Or perhaps you have a goal but have no idea on the steps to get there? ... 12.01.2022 Do you overuse the question "why"? "Why" is a great question for business. As a leader we should question why profits aren't up or why our teams aren't engaged. Is it such a good question to use directly with someone on your team? Will you get a good and honest response or a defensive one? ... Here are my thoughts on asking questions that still answer "why" without intimidating someone. #humanresources #management #leadership

10.01.2022 With the world effectively moving into social isolation, are you finding yourself needing to work remotely? Are you now leading a team that you don't physically see every day? Working from home may not seem too disruptive at first. Many enjoy the new feeling of flexibility and change in scenery. But soon enough, some new and interesting challenges begin to pop up: 1. How do I maintain my trust and connection with my team?... 2. How do I manage my own performance or the performance of my team when I can't see them doing the work? 3. How do I adapt to new ways of working, to a change in routine, to new distractions and to the new technical skills I may need? 4. How do I stay motivated in an environment that used to be my place of rest? 5. How do I overcome the feelings of isolation as time moves forward? Working from home requires a mindset shift and the ability swiftly to change. I have created a virtual webinar that can be accessed from any team anywhere in the world to help you work through some of these challenges. Get in touch at [email protected] to discuss dates and timing or talk to me about tailored options for you. #management #leadership #resilience #waysofworking

09.01.2022 Would you say you are good at reflecting on your day or week? Do you spend time reading books and articles and reflecting on your thoughts about them? Bonus question: Can you list the actions you took after you reflected on something? My observations:... 1. Most people know how to reflect on things very well 2. Most people can identify what they need to change to improve next time 3. Many can't go on to articulate how they are going to take action and the first steps are never taken *Reflection without action means nothing.* #leadership #personaldevelopment #coach #humanresources

09.01.2022 This week I'm exploring leadership habits. Do you have a bad habit of giving negative feedback but wrapping it up with something positive? Putting a positive ribbon on something negative doesn't make it pretty.... I once witnessed a manager tell a member of her team to give her work to someone else and focus on her other strengths. It was framed as a positive (you have other strengths) but it sounded more like "you are no good at this". The conversation laboured on all the strengths this person while making a big deal about the work needing to be passed on because it was being done poorly. There was a missed opportunity to explore the issues. The one dimensional solution was couched as positive but felt rather deflating. I bet good money that this team member didn't hear or remember one strength mentioned and walked out of that meeting feeling like she was just bad at her job. A better approach? Forget the gift wrapping! Acknowledge the problem. Explore the issues. Focus on building a shared solution together. That's building a far more resilient team member who deals with setbacks positively. What bad habits do you see in the workplace that need replacing? #humanresources #management #resilience

08.01.2022 Do you ever express your gratitude to your clients or customers? I know that we hope that people enjoyed our products or services. We ask for reviews, survey them to find out what could be better. But have you thought of the gratitude you may feel towards them? And for what they brought to you? A study in 2017 found that those who wrote gratitude letters reported significantly better mental health even 12 weeks after their writing exercise ended. And this was even with those ...that had reported clinically low levels of mental health at the time. Its a simple thing that has profound benefits. 1. Gratitude frees us from toxic emotions 2. Gratitude helps even if you dont share it 3. Even though it takes time, gratitude has lasting effects on the brain 4. Much of our time and energy is spent pursuing things we currently dont have. Gratitude reverses our priorities to help us appreciate the people and things we do I know I always thank my clients, but Ive never written a gratitude letter. I think it's something I think I am going to add to my arsenal. Starting with a client I worked with on Wednesday and Thursday. It's a long term project but I spent two days this week in a room with 14 funny, thoughtful and motivated leaders. I am thankful to be working with them, AND I am grateful for the insights they gave me, for the opportunity to reflect on my work and how I can make it even better, and for making me feel part of a team and a legacy in an organisation. I encourage you to try it. It may change your day! Perhaps end your week with a letter of gratitude to someone you know?

08.01.2022 What can we learn about goal setting from dogs? This is my kelpie dog Dharma on a morning walk with me. Can you imagine a kelpie wishing she were a boxer or setting a goal to look like a pug? Why do humans set goals to make us look like someone else's version of perfect? Extrinsic goals are valued for something they can provide us & they often connect to what other people think of us. Goals for being wealthy, having a fancy work title & being famous are examples. They are v...aluable not in themselves but for what they can bring. Intrinsic goals are inherently valuable & satisfying. They connect us with our interests, help us grow, connect us with others, make us feel like were in control, give us feelings of competence & like we have mastery over our environment. Be like Dharma. If she wants to play, she plays. She doesn't care how she looks or what she smells like or what the other dogs think of her. She experiences pure joy in the pursuit of what keeps her happy & she definitely doesn't care what I think of her getting her paws wet! How can leaders help their teams set intrinsic goals? I explore types of goals in my book "The Mindset Fitness Workout". Keep an eye out for launch dates soon! #goals #leadership #management

08.01.2022 Motivation versus commitment. What's more important? If you struggle to stay motivated, or find your team's motivation flagging a little bit, have you considered that it's because there is no commitment to a meaningful goal? Motivation comes and goes, but if you truly connect with something meaningful, the commitment to that goal will keep you moving forward. ... Motivation waits for the perfect conditions. Motivation waits for a good day. Commitment pushes through, even when situations are not ideal. #leadership #motivation #goals

08.01.2022 If you're looking for a great book to read during this social distancing time, and you want to transform your leadership habits, I'd highly recommend James Clear's Atomic Habits. Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. No single instance will transform your beliefs, but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity. ~James Clear Seems quite relevant right now. ... #leadership #habits

08.01.2022 Want to read more books but struggle to find the time? I'd like to recommend a podcast by Steph Clarke. She does all the reading so you don't have to! Each week she brings you the lessons from the best non-fiction books she's read and shares the "big three things" the book taught her. Last year I read a book a week but this year I committed to reading only 12 more philosophical books. Even so, I am still getting a few extra learning from Steph's reading too. ... 07.01.2022 And will you succeed? Yes you will indeed! (98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed) Dr Seuss. Having even one, small positive thought can change the rest of your day for the better. Happy Tuesday! Go chase that success! #mindset #success #resilience

07.01.2022 I've been talking a fair amount about goal setting the last couple of weeks. Here's a 5-minute read about the challenges of strategy execution. The number one challenge mentioned is poor goal setting and ensuring your team has a goal setting methodology. However, I think the article fails to talk about how we often set too many goals, objectives and KPI's to track. And I find that SMART goals also create pages and pages of measures to track. The law of diminishing returns... says: If I plan to do 1-3 things, I will achieve 1-3 things If I plan to do 4-10 things, I might achieve 1 or 2 If I plan to do more than 10 things, I will achieve nothing So how many objectives should you have on your strategy document? Let's talk about key areas into objectives into KPI's. One key area should have no more than three objectives. The rationale being, each objective need its own skill base and resource set. This will help reduce KPIs. At a minimum, each objective will have one KPI associated with it. No more than three. If you have 5 goal key areas. You'll have 15 objectives. You'll have 45 KPI's. When you put it that way, does it seem like you are tracking too many goals in your business? http://ow.ly/XKpD50yDpFe

05.01.2022 Do you speak to yourself in the same way you speak to the people you love? Just a thought for Valentine's day. #resilience #mindset

05.01.2022 Last week, one of my coaching clients was frustrated because her line manager had asked her to focus on a business goal that meant she had to give up on a personal goal. She was asked to hand over a piece of work to someone else so she could focus on other business priorities. The work would have allowed her to learn new skills, but the time needed to do so would have meant her business area would suffer. When I questioned why it was so important for her to learn those skill...s right now, she told me it was because she wanted her manager to see her gain skills and see her succeed. The goal had nothing to do with learning the skill but more with impressing her line manager. I asked her: "If you achieve your business goals, doesn't that mean you still succeed? Will you not still impress your manager?" She hadn't even thought of it in that way. As leaders, it is important for you to help your team align their personal goals to business goals. Try asking: 1. What is one thing you are really good at in your role? 2. Where would you like to excel in your role? 3. Which organisational competencies would you like to develop further? Then ask "How will this all help the business?" and "What steps can you take?" Do you align personal and business goals? #hr #leadership

01.01.2022 Are you doing your part to limit the spread of Covid-19? An announcement from Luisa I have made a decision to safeguard network during the Covid-19 pandemic. As I often meet with multiple clients in a week and run workshops of up to 50 people at a time, I am painfully aware of being responsible for not spreading illness between them. My concern is not for myself. About 50% of my clients work in the aged care or disability sector, and I need to be mindful of not exposing thei...r most vulnerable clients through my contact with their teams. Until there is a clearer picture of how the situation is evolving in Australia, I have decided to: 1. Move all my coaching clients to video conferencing in the short term 2. Deliver team workshops in webinar form. Many of my clients requested this over the weekend already to support their new working from home policies Lastly, if you are transitioning your team to a work from home policy, I am in the process of designing a webinar that discusses the mindset for working from home. This includes: Dealing with the change Staying motivated Dealing with distractions Staying connected with your team I am also happy to provide individual coaching on these topics. Let me know how I can help your team through this challenging period.
