Over the last 48 years of School visits, there have been occasions where I've spoken to remote Schools 'out in the bush' from well-equipped 'School of the air' studios (eg. 16.01.2022 FROM THE SCHOOL CORRESPONDENCE VAULT: Christ the King Primary School, Braybrook, Melbourne. 28/2/2018 ... to Vicki: "The last visit was many years ago probab...ly about 1986 (Margaret?? was the T/L/DP?) I remember your School very well because in the Library, the Students had created a diorama themed from one of my books ‘The Pirate who wouldn’t wash’ ... for BOOK WEEK. A beautiful display: a magnificent pirate galleon set on a blue plasticine sea in a big cardboard box (lots of hard work) There were some rats onboard but not a pirate in sight!! When I asked about the ‘non-show’ of Pongo and his fellow buccaneers, I was told that many of the Students/their Families had recently experienced the pirate attacks made on their fragile craft as they finally escaped Vietnam and headed south to Australia!! The word ‘pirate’ evoked stress and trauma in the children . so no pirates!! I said that I understood perfectly .. but I never really did. Given those terrible circumstances, why was that book chosen in the first place. Nonetheless, I had a great time presenting my cartoons and tales, the kids & I had lots of fun there was much laughter! TRUE STORY!!"

02.01.2022 BOOK WEEK 2019: Catholic Diocese of Wollongong "Meanwhile, Australian author/illustrator and children’s entertainer, Michael Salmon, will visit St Paul’s Albion Park and St Paul’s Camden throughout the week. Salmon said his visits are aimed at helping children develop their creative talents. He describes his sessions as fast speed cartooning which will demonstrate to the students the process of how he invents a book, from the prototype stage to printed copy"

02.01.2022 One of my favourite books as a child was The Pirate Who Wouldn't Wash by Michael Salmon. I've been searching for a copy for many years and then my darling frien...d Niki came to visit today with a signed copy from 1990 that she managed to find somehow. I am ecstatic! I'm so lucky to have such wonderful friends. Toby and I read it as our bedtime story tonight and he loved it as much as I did. My heart is happy. See more
