16.01.2022 veski #Innovation #Fellow Prof Ben Marsland, at Monash University's Central Clinical School, & colleagues have identified two molecules with the potential to combat #asthma & other respiratory diseases such as Acute respiratory distress syndrome #ARDS) - the respiratory disease that is prevalent, and often fatal, in people with serious #COVID19. The research, published in Nature Immunology, Nature Research (Publishing) https://lnkd.in/g5vTSiZ looks at the impacts of the immun...e system on #gutbacteria. They transplanted gut bacteria from an immune-deficient mouse model into normal mice & observed the animals’ immune systems and were surprised to discover that the gut bacteria exhibited enhanced metabolism of L-tyrosine, resulting in the production of a byproduct called p-cresol sulfate (PCS). "We found that giving mice either L-tyrosine or PCS, provided significant protection against lung inflammation. " said Professor Marsland. L-tyrosine is currently sold as a dietary supplement, enabling the research team to fast track their discovery to clinical trials in 2021. With PCS suspected to be toxic, the research group is developing a form of PCS without the potential toxic side effects.

14.01.2022 Our 6th professional development session as part of the #veski inspiring women #STEMsidebyside program is #Leading self with #Courage, being delivered face-to-face by Dina Pozzo (MAPP. Certified Dare to Lead Facilitator) on 10 Feb 2021. This is the first time we have been able to bring the 2020 cohort together and we are thrilled to provide the opportunity for this amazing group of #WomenInSTEM to network and connect in person at ARRB - your National Transport Research Organ...isation. The demonstration of #Courage provides a number of individual and workplace benefits. This highly practical workshop seeks to heighten self-awareness of own courage by reflecting upon past courageous acts, helping develop a plan to access this knowledge so that individuals can better undertake courageous acts in the future. As Founder & Director of insium pty ltd, Dina launched their #LeadingwithCourage program at the 5th World Congress of Positive Psychology in Montreal in 2017. She is also accredited by Dr Brené Brown in Dare to Lead- an empirically based international courage-building program. #togetherwearestronger
