25.01.2022 Hi all, please see the link below from a behaviour vet colleague of mine Dr Julie Ashton. I have been working with Julie, Russell and his current owners, who sadly have had to make a decision to rehome him. If you can help in any way please let me or Julie know. Thanks!

24.01.2022 Heres a beautiful story, a client of mine took on 2 gorgeous foster kittens in not so gorgeous a state, riddled in ringworm, diarrhoea and scrawny. Continued treatment with daily anti-fungals that she had to divide into tenths (yes tenths), weekly shampooing, feeding and loving, quarantined in her home, slowly improved and many weeks later are now bright and beautiful young kittens soon to be on the way to their new home in Kiama. Last thing this dedicated client is attending to is desexing before they go off which were doing in 2 weeks. Amazing dedicated, unpaid work by Courtney for the very lucky Salt & Opal, see their before and after shots below!! Awesome!

22.01.2022 I'd like to introduce you all to Boaz, a slightly timid but really lovely cat, who may well just have graduated to my biggest star patient! His devoted owner Caitlin caught him in this possibly compromising pose below! So I was called in to see Boaz as he wasn't his usual bubbly self and long story short we diagnosed diabetes and on he went to twice daily insulin injections. Within 4 weeks he was off his insulin, on a great home made diet that he loves and he hasn't looked ba...ck. This is how we'd love all our cat diabetics to go and if caught early and with very diligent initial management, many cats can go into remission quickly and not require insulin at all. Well done Caitlin!! We have new glucose monitoring devices now which can make initial management and treatment a lot easier than people think so I'm looking forward to getting all my future cat diabetics into remission. Moral of the story though is don't let your cats get overweight and try to stick to high protein, low carbohydrate diets (preferably wet if possible, no or very little dry kibble) for our beautiful obligate carnivore feline companions.

17.01.2022 Ok guess whats inside, alright its a cat! Some scared and anxious cats respond very well to swaddling like this. This gorgeous but quite freaked out cat was very happy just to stay nice and cosy and safe inside this burrito wrap and allowed me to do a full examination inside it without any scruffing or aggressive restraining. We poked the her head out at one point to check everything and popped her back in and didnt bat an eyelid. Very nice, as minimal stress as possible, always aim for fear free, though of-course cant always be total!

17.01.2022 Couldnt resist this one, my old boy Reuben getting a bath with his ear muffs on to block out the sound, so cute!!!

16.01.2022 *Please read - Leptospira update * In the last week there has been some intensification on social media about leptospirosis in the inner city area of Sydney. I would like to offer some information in an attempt to help better understand the disease and the genuine risk and relieve some anxiety. I will start by saying that our current vaccination policies are unchanged, and we are not recommending vaccination at this time in our area but it is available if anyone would still l...ike it done. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that is generally spread by rodents as they are a reservoir species for the organism Leptospira. The most likely source of infection is from exposure to infected rodent urine or stagnant water contaminated with the urine. With the recent wet weather spread of this organism may be higher, however it must be noted that the presence of this organism in rodents is likely endemic (meaning regularly present in rodents, and not a new disease). The leprospira organisms do not survive outside rodents in a dry environment. The infection can be treated effectively with antibiotics and especially if caught early. However it can cause kidney and liver failure and death if not treated. The recent cases appear to have been from a localised area in the inner city, and also likely associated with dogs that are wandering streets and coming into contact with water sources in back alleys etc. where rats are more likely to be found. So while the risk may be a little higher in wetter weather like weve seen, the overall risk to the community in general we would consider to not be increased from the usual risk which is realistically still low. The situation will continue to be monitored by the veterinary community and if any further evidence is found that the real risk is increasing we will surely alert our clients about it. For the rest of the information please see our Facebook post as it wont fit here...... https://www.facebook.com/VETaround/

16.01.2022 OMG totally gobsmacked with my bday present from my family - meet our new puppy Cora, have always wanted a Bernese Mountain dog and my wife has been telling me for the last few weeks there are no puppies around at all.........sneaky woman! VETaround will be closed between Christmas and New Year - if you need anything at all please contact our base hospital Vet HQ who will be able to organise anything you need. Cause I couldn't resist, here's more pics of my new pup...py Cora, too adorable (even when she's chewing our stairs and shoes!!). Jen and I are so happy to be able to provide VETaround's services to you all. I often tell my friends how lucky we are to have such amazing clients, you are all so wonderful and so welcoming to us, and we really love being there for you all. 14.01.2022 ***** Attention all dog owners ***** Please see the link below, an important update from the University of Sydney Teaching Hospital. There were no cases of leptospirosis this year until 3 weeks ago and now we have had cases in Newtown, Balmain, Lower North Shore, and Paddington to add to last years cases in Glebe, Surry Hills and Paddington. This is a very serious infectious disease. Please see my posts from last year and dont hesitate to call or message us to chat further. ...Vaccination is strongly recommended for dogs living within 5km of these areas and especially if rat chasers. The team at VETaround.

14.01.2022 The little gems of doing house calls, not always about the pets. My lovely client Bunny and her two feisty cats Tilly and Tommy have a lovely garden that they share with some fairies..........

13.01.2022 Best friends Louie & Harry....

12.01.2022 Spike is a gorgeous Burmilla in need of a new home as his loving family are moving overseas, he really loves people and would suit a couple or small family and even a family with an older dog. Please contact them if you are able. Thanks!

11.01.2022 BEWARE - serious cuteness about to follow! Have a look at the gorgeous Hulk, a new puppy bro for Willow, both Great Dane pups! Looks like instant love to me . The story is not all joy (of-course), Willows 16 week old sister recently died from acute pneumonia with no known cause, of-course everyone devastated, but no more than little Willow, so the family decided to get a new sibling for Willow sooner than they otherwise would have. Looks like it was a great idea! Luckily for me I get to see them this afternoon for their puppy checkups - yay!!!!

11.01.2022 Hi all, has been a while since we've posted, thought I'd kick it off again with this gorgeous picture of Poppet trying to tell mum something! She just had her two upper canines removed and is recovering very well, but doesn't want mum to leave for her holiday! She'll be back soon Poppet!! Watch out shortly for the upcoming Newsletter and Pet of the Month too.........

11.01.2022 So, I spend much of my week discussing and advising about general heath care, including worms, fleas, diet etc. But when my own new puppy poops out these little round wiggly things and my wife sends me a text What are these, WTF?, all I could do was laugh and remember me and my pets are not immune from anything either! We gave Cora her monthly puppy wormer yesterday, good to see its doing its job!!

11.01.2022 *** Leptospira Update *** There have been further media updates which some of you may have come across so I'd just like to update you all here. Our veterinary association (AVA) has released an alert to its members advising of the current findings which now includes 6 cases seen in the inner city area of Sydney. Usable information seems still to be sketchy and we still only know the "serovar" of one of the cases, being copenhagi. The actual risk of contracting the infection is... currently unknown, and while traditionally has been low it may be higher at the moment. The AVA has advised that all dogs in the inner city of Sydney be vaccinated and access to rats and stagnant water be limited. I feel that at risk dogs in the inner city should be vaccinated as long as the owner is aware of the limitations of the vaccine. So at risk dogs are those that chase/hunt rats, dogs allowed off-lead and roaming, and in particularly off lead in areas where rats may proliferate and amongst stagnant water sources. The vaccine will only cover one of the serovars, and it is difficult to determine in any individual if the vaccine will be 100% effective, some animals requiring two boosters following the primary vaccine, rather than one. We are also happy to vaccinate any animals that may not have a higher risk, if owners are worried about possible exposure. Anyone with any further questions at all please contact us and as mentioned above, if you wish to have your dog vaccinated, we can organise this.

09.01.2022 *** Vets are Essential *** So we have finally been considered an essential service during these lockdowns and able to practice completely, with appropriate precautions. This is great news and confirms that VETaround will continue services as usual, however we ask that all our clients continue to follow all guidelines and inform us of anything that may preclude us from coming into your homes such as illness, quarantining etc. We will do our best to revise consultations accordingly such as outdoors, in the van or whatever is practical. We hope everyone stays safe, and dont hesitate to contact us if you need anything. Best wishes from us at VETaround. https://www.ava.com.au//vets-an-essential-service-during-/

08.01.2022 Todays happy patient, normally cranky Pushkin feeling very comfortable on his pain killers after removing his large carnassial tooth this morning! Grabbed a cuddle while I could!

08.01.2022 After having recently lost their beautiful dog, this loving family brought Ally into their home, after she was taken in by a shelter. She was a very anxious dog and with some patience and love has bonded beautifully to her new parents but in particular to her new friend the door stop, which she drags all the way into her bed so they can sleep together! It doesnt get much more gorgeous than that!!

06.01.2022 See if you can spot the dog?? Little Rosie was a little needle shy, but couldnt help to continue wagging her tail! Thankfully all ended well after her Proheart injection, even following me out into the lift, I would have loved to take her with me, shes adorable!

05.01.2022 Why it is a good idea to ensure your pets microchips are up to date: This is Leo and his new Mum Sue. Leo has been living in the surrounds of these apartments for around 2 years or so, with Sue making sure he was ok, fed and watered. Sue called me out because he wasnt looking his usual glossy self and we did the consultation on the outdoor steps with Leo in her arms. Because he was a stray and didnt belong to Sue I scanned his microchip, and a few minutes later had his own...er on the phone very grateful his cat had been located and was well. The family had moved and Leo kept running away back to near where they had lived and one time didnt come back. Sadly for the family they were moving overseas shortly and so couldnt take the cat with them at this stage but wanted to see him and came around to meet Sue & Leo for a reunion and farewell. They were so grateful for the chance to see him again and to meet such a dedicated and lovely person in Sue who will now be officially Leos new owner. Happy sad story but at least a resolution thanks to the microchip. There are many microchips that arent updated when people move so please ensure you do this as a priority. Our loved ones deserve it!!

05.01.2022 Ok if you dont think this is cute theres something wrong with you! This is Jinx, a gorgeous new puppy for a client who sadly had to euthanase her old companion a little while ago, it was very difficult to stop playing with him this morning! So who thinks they know what breed he is??

04.01.2022 **** Update No. 2 Leptospirosis Inner city Sydney **** Eastern suburbs vets convened a meeting last week to discuss the current situation regarding leptospirosis in dogs in the inner city of Sydney. We discussed the cases that have occurred to present and also recommendations we thought applicable. A research project currently being undertaken by a specialist at Sydney Uni Veterinary Faculty on the prevalence of the leptospira bacteria in dogs and cats in Sydney was presented... and discussed as well. Following this discussion and in communication with other experts including a conservation biologist about the population and movement of rat species in the inner city the following recommendation was concluded: ** Dogs within a 3km radius of Surry Hills should be vaccinated for Leptospira. Initial vaccination includes a primary vaccine, followed by a booster 2-4 weeks later. This would then need to be boosted annually if continued cover is desired. ** Dogs outside this area but that go into this area regularly would also be considered to be at risk and should be considered for vaccination. If you are unsure about whether to vaccinate your dog please dont hesitate to contact us and well discuss it with you. I have attached a map that describes the 3km radius around Surry Hills (inner circle) and also a 5km radius (outer circle). Please see the previous posts about how the disease is spread and risks for getting the disease. Not every dog that lives within this 3km radius of Surry Hills is at risk but due to the confinement of cases to this area we feel it is appropriate to vaccinate all dogs in this area unless their individual risk is extremely low. At this time we dont yet know the full extent of spread of this bacteria or disease and over the next few months hopefully we will better get to understand this. In northern areas of Australia and some areas overseas this vaccine is considered core and given annually as part of these core vaccines. We are yet to recommend this in our area as we know that for years this organism has been endemic and incidence of infection has been low. We may change these recommendations base on the outcome of this study and other information. Dont hesitate to contact us if you wish to discuss this further, and of-course schedule an appointment if you wish. Best regards, Ari and the VETaround team.

02.01.2022 ***** Coronavirus Policy ***** With the emerging intensity of COVID-19 spreading across Australia, veterinary practices are formulating policies around the gathering of people in reception waiting areas and consultation room confined spaces, and how to best continue providing veterinary care. It seems that mobile vet practice is in a special situation with service provision in your homes, and so while there arent large numbers of people gathering, we are coming into several ...homes every day around the larger metropolitan Sydney area. At this stage we are continuing to provide veterinary care in your homes and we are taking appointments as usual, however with care. I plan to do so unless there is a full lockdown on all of us as our pets will still require veterinary health care. I wash my hands after every consultation and am using hand sanitiser after that, and of-course practicing social distancing as much as possible. I am closely monitoring my health and of-course will have to self-isolate if I become exposed at any point, as every one else does if appropriate to their circumstances. We are able to modify consultation practices for anyone that prefers to do so, such as having the consultation outdoors if possible and appropriate or any other variation on request. I also request that my clients monitor their health closely and advise us if there is any reason I shouldnt be entering your homes, and we can assess if any alternative means for providing health care to your pet is possible. This is a quickly evolving situation and everyone is feeling anxious. I can assure you VETaround is following the updates from the Chief Health Office of NSW, Australian Veterinary Association and other appropriate sources and are doing our best to continue to provide a safe veterinary health care service to you and your pets. Please let us know if you have any concerns or questions at all and well be happy to accomodate any special needs where we can.
