24.01.2022 It's National guide dogs month! This month we are reminded to honour our Guide Dogs in Australia and celebrate how they are responsible for making such a positive difference to the lives of the blind and low vision community.

24.01.2022 Great blog post by our friends at Australian Dog Lover! Keep your dogs safe this Christmas by looking out for these doggy dangers!

20.01.2022 Wishing you a fabulous New Years Eve, plus a gentle reminder regarding fireworks tonight (both scheduled and unscheduled). Fireworks are very noisy and are a cause of anxiety for many dogs and cats. Anxiety and panic means dogs may try to hide, scratch at and break doors to get inside to 'safety' or jump fences and try to run away. They may become lost, injured, or run into oncoming traffic, risking life. Tips to help with fireworks anxiety:... 1. Bring them inside with you. 2. Provide a safe spot. Make sure your pet is safe, secure and unable to injure themselves before the fireworks have begun. Is there a place or room they like to hang out in? This is where they feel safest and would be the best area to keep them in. Confining them somewhere where they don't feel safe can lead to increased anxiety. So even if they're hiding in a safe but weird spot, best not to disturb. 3. Have blinds down to reduce the flashes of light. Background noise is also really helpful. 4. Garments. Products like a thunder shirt. They apply gentle, constant pressure to a stressed dog that is shown to be calming similar to swaddling an infant. 5. Phermones, some pheromones ares stress reducing for both cats and dogs. We're on standby if you need some online Vet support, till midnight AEST/AEDT. As always, have fun and stay safe! - Claire & the Vetchat team

20.01.2022 It's #Adopt a Less-Adoptable Week (September 21-27) and no we are not recommending you to drop everything to adopt a pet now! Research is recommended for any current or new pet owners and know that Vetchat is here every step of the way. Like our lovely customer - Maruschka who reviewed "Having adopted an adult cat, our first pet in quite a few years, I have a lot of questions regarding things like dental health and allergic reactions to plants, etc. I have had several extremely helpful online chats with Vet Assist, which were very reassuring and have guided me on this new pet ownership journey." We love helping our customers along their new pet journey!

11.01.2022 Fire burns are affecting many pets in and around fire affected areas, and although it is critical to get pets with burns Veterinary treatment as quickly as possible, sadly, many people cant access a Vet as they are cut off by the fires. If you find yourself without help, weve written a blog post on Fire Burn Care for Cats and Dogs, which you can read here: https://blog.vetchat.com.au/fire-burn-care-for-cats-and-do/ QUICK TIPS: ... * Use appropriate measures so that you are not bitten * Rinse the eyes of pets exposed to fire * Within 2 hours of a minor burn, cooling the area with cool water for 30 minutes can really help * Infection prevention with daily flushing to remove dirt and debris followed by safe topical antibacterial agents * Non-Adherent bandaging to protect affected area, changed daily * Confine in a safe, warm, clean space with water, love and nutrition, and see Vet as soon as accessible. 04.01.2022 It's the second Sunday of September and we recommend you to hug your hound (of course more than you already do!) There is more to this day than just cuddling up with your pet - this is an opportunity to get down to their eye level and observe the world from their perspective. Maybe you'll find a broken toy below the cupboard or old piece of food that has fallen off the counter. Check the yard for any toxic plants that may have crawled through the cracks! Not only will they enjoy your company, but they will thank you for making their home more safe and secure to freely explore again.

03.01.2022 Were certainly not superstitious this #halloween. Lets spread the good that our beautiful black cats do, share your pics and stories with us!

03.01.2022 The fires in Australia have already caused an estimated half a billion animal lives lost as per the University of Sydney, and so many more ill, injured or left without access to food and water. In an ideal situation, it is critical that animals with fire related injuries and burns receive Veterinary treatment as quickly as possible. Sadly, many people cant access a Vet, and wild life rescue groups cant get in, as they are cut off by the fires. If youre not sure what to d...o or what your options are, weve written some tips on how to help Wildlife in the fires: https://blog.vetchat.com.au/how-to-help-wildlife-in-the-fi/ QUICK TIPS: * Call the local Vet or wildlife rescue professional for species specific advice first * Assess the situation from a distance, write down the location etc, and use appropriate measures so that you are not bitten. * If you can safely do so, place the animal in a darkened (and ventilated) cardboard box * Handling and physical restraint can be very stressful for wild animals. When they are already unwell, the extra stress can be enough to tip them over the edge. Handling should be minimised and stopped if the animal is becoming distressed. * Straight to the Vet clinic In cases transport is impossible, or rescue cannot quickly attend: * Water orally is okay for alert animals who can swallow * Stress must be minimised, if overheated - provide a safe, quiet, cool place with water and you can spray water on the feet and mouth (only on mouth if they can swallow). * Arrange for a Vet as soon as accessible. Who to call for wildlife help? *Nearest Veterinarian. *NSW Wires Wildlife Rescue 1300 094 737 https://www.wires.org.au/ *Victoria Wildlife Victoria 03 8400 7300 https://www.wildlifevictoria.org.au/ Stay safe, Your Vetchat Vets
