05.01.2022 Highlands LLEN stands in solidarity with the peaceful #BlackLivesMatter protestors here in Australia and across the globe who are advocating for an end to violence and oppression against the black community. We were pleased to see our own community of Ballarat take part in this movement with the silent protest to stop black deaths in custody held over the weekend to which several Highlands LLEN staff attended. The importance of both individuals and organisations speaking out ...and acting to support #BLM as well as amplifying the voices of the black community cannot be understated. We know that in 2016 statistics showed that Year 12 attainment rates for Indigenous Australians were at 65.3% compared to 89.1% for non-Indigenous Australians and the gap is still not closed (Source: PM&C2019, FaHCSIA2013). Highlands LLEN’s vision is that all young people in our communities should be provided opportunities to successfully engage in education, training or employment. We would like to re-state this vision with an emphasis on the need to fully and comprehensively support young people from the black community in engaging with their pathways into adulthood. We will continue to use our voice, connections and influence in our community to encourage accountability, reconciliation and equality. Black Lives Matter.
