16.01.2022 My kitten seems to be losing hair and just not doing very well In this case, we probably need to take a look for a common infection called RINGWORM. You see, the thing about RINGWORM is that it’s name illudes us in the wrong direction. It’s not even a worm (WHAT A LIAR), it is actually a fungus. ... Ringworm is highly contagious and can spread between dogs, cats and ourselves. It is spread through direct contact - that includes handling of contaminated bedding/bowls/carpet/furniture just to name a few. Why is it commonly seen in kittens? They’ve got soft skin and soft fur, are growing quickly and are exposed to many different infectious agents at once when little, making them the perfect home for this opportunistic infection. To diagnose ringworm, can can do in house microscope cytology on skin scrapes/samples taken by our vets, assess the skin under particular lights and assess the pattern of hairloss. To treat ringworm, we have a few treatment options depending on our findings during the skin consultation. Ringworm can be complicated by bacterial infections, allergies or other diseases so we need to make sure we treat specific to the patient. Worries? Give us a call! (07) 4151 5044.

11.01.2022 Feline Ear Mites These ear-y little parasites feed of the skin and wax in the cat’s ear canal (we certainly could feel of better things to dine on!) To see mites, your vet needs to look for them under a microscope after taking samples from the ear canal. ... Signs that suggest your cat might have ear mites are: - Scratching their ears - Shaking their head - Dropping one or both ears down - Having a lot of excessive dark discharge in their ears - Hair loss around the base of the ear - Sores around the base of the ear - Head tilts Ear mites can be contagious between cats AND dogs so the most effective way to ensure your pets don’t have ear mites is to have them up to date with effective preventative treatments. We can treat ear mites quite easily as long as we use the correct treatment AND get the correct diagnosis. AND YES, THAT IS AN EAR MITE IN THE PICTURE! In all it’s glory. Give us a call if you are worried your little kitty has eat mites, (07) 4151 5044.
