25.01.2022 COMMIT TO FIT UPDATE! Fingal Bay Park Run - Week 13. The girl's and members of the Hunter Team Veteran have completed 13 park runs at 12 different locations. Only two more to go until they reach their goal of 15 parkruns in 15 weeks!... When starting, the girls did not realise how much they would come to love their Thursday morning runs, and how far they could push their goals of running 5km every week. "I look forward to Thursday mornings, it's great to start the morning with a run and positive people! The coffee, conversations and laughs afterwards with the group is what makes it. To see our group grow and friendships forming, it's really been an amazing 13 weeks!" says Rachel. Next week the group were meant to meet at Callaghan Parkrun, but as it is a weekday and Uni will be in full swing, we will meet at Jesmond Park, Robinson Ave in Jesmond at 0745 for 0800 start! See you there! #vsamovement Open Arms - Veterans & Families Counselling parkrun Australia Kate O’Donoghue

19.01.2022 We love seeing people out and getting active in the lead up to Veterans' Health Week. Miriam did her 5km as part of Team Veteran and her 'Commit to be Fit' mission on Williamson's Beach, Wonthaggi in Victoria. She knew Rachel and Kate would be on sand today, so joined them at 8am this morning at her local beach! She had a massive headwind and found the beach to be an excellent workout! Her local parkrun courses are Inverloch and Phillip Island, having her 50 run and 25 volu...nteer tee shirts with parkrun! She is looking forward to resuming once they are open again, but in the meantime has been doing the (not)parkruns and joining Kate and Rachel on their Commit to be Fit journey. Miriam has family in the Defence, and knows the importance of sport, and with the gyms closed in some states, believes (not)parkruns to be an excellent way to stay active and be part of a virtual community. Well done Miriam, and thank you for being part of our parkrun team and community! Join Miriam, Rachel and Kate this Veterans' Health Week by registering with parkrun and joining the 'Team Veteran' Running Club at: https://www.parkrun.com.au/register/?section=form Don't forget to send us a pic with #vsamovement and let us know where you are running! parkrun Australia Open Arms - Veterans & Families Counselling

15.01.2022 Golf in the Hunter is back!!! On Monday, the Maitland Vietnam Veterans and Services Legion Golf Day was held at Kurri Kurri. They invite all veterans to join them and participate in the day. Dave Hockey, a current serving veteran attended the day and provided the following report:... Today I had the pleasure of playing a round of golf with the lads from the Maitland Vietnam Veteran's Association. A great day was had by all, very social with much banter and laughing at our shortcomings in the world of professional golfing. The day started out in heavy fog, which successfully hid how bad our initial drives were, but once it lifted the day cleared into a magic day for a good walk ruined. Once the round was finished we debriefed over a BBQ lunch and a couple of frothies, vowing to return and master the game another day. The Golf Days are a great day out and are open to all veterans. So why not get a long and have some fun on the course? If you love golf - why not attend the next golf day: Where: Hawks Nest Golf Club, 1 Sanderling Ave, Hawks Nest NSW 2324 When: Monday 19th October 2020 Time: 0745 for 0800 tee off If you are interested in attending, please email [email protected] to secure your place. #vsamovement #StrongerTogether #golfday

14.01.2022 In recovering from severe injuries sustained in a Black Hawk Helicopter crash in Afghanistan in 2010, Gary Wilson had to go back to bare basics. I had to learn how to do everything from the ground up again, says Gary. Walking, talking, even being vertical again after being on my back on a bed for so long. Ten years on and Gary and his wife Renee now runs Bare Coaching, his fitness training business. If anyone’s able to share lessons and guidance on resilience, strength an...d becoming unstoppable, it’s Gary. Getting more involved in exercise and understanding how the body works had always been something that Gary enjoyed. When it came time to look for a new career path on leaving the army, he knew he wanted to help people and fitness training stood out. Gary focus' his training on full body exercise but it is always underpinned with something that same mindset that got him to where he is now: Be fully focused on what you want to achieve and you’ll get there. To find out more about Bare Coaching, and what Gary and Renee are doing follow this link: https://veteransport.org.au/stories-article/the-bare-basics/ (Photo Credit Gary and Renee Wilson) #vsamovement #StrongerTogether #Nevergiveup Gary Wilson Bare Coaching
13.01.2022 TWILIGHT SAILING IN THE HUNTER! Last night a group of twelve Hunter veterans were invited to join crews of the Newcastle Crusing Yacht Club in a twilight race starting in Newcastle Harbour. The atmosphere was one of excitement with our own Veteran Engagement Specialist Rachel Kerrigan hitting the race starters horn for the race to commence!... The race wound its way through the harbour, out through the heads into the open water and back into the harbour. The weather was perfect for sailing, with clear skies, calm water and just enough wind to make for close racing! It was a magnificent sight seeing all the racers coming back on dusk! A huge thank you to Paul and Simon from Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club for helping to organise the night, and for all the crew that welcomed us with open arms and gave us all an evening to remember! We are looking forward to the next one! To register you interest in future sailing events, please email [email protected] with your name and contact details and we will keep you updated. #vsamovement #veteranshelpingveterans #StrongerTogether
13.01.2022 At 11am on 11 November 1918, the guns on the Western Front fell silent. There had been four years of continuous warfare, where more than 60,000 of the 330,000 Australians who fought in World War One had died during their service. Today, Remembrance Day, we commemorate not only those who were killed during World War One, but in both World Wars and from all wars and conflicts since. We also pay tribute to those who have served, who continue to serve, and the families who have... been left behind. The Australian War Memorial is holding a nationally televised Remembrance Day commemorative ceremony, commencing at 10.45am with the arrival of the Guard of Honour. We will remember them. Lest we forget. Photo courtesy: Australian War Memorial

11.01.2022 General Sir Peter Cosgrove has been announced as the Patron of Veteran Sport Australia. In this new capacity, General Cosgrove will play an active role in furthering Veteran Sport Australia as a major force in improving the health and wellbeing of veterans and their families through sport. In his first official act as Patron, General Cosgrove will recite The Ode at State of Origin Game 2 in Sydney tonight. General Cosgrove’s role at State of Origin Game 2 reinforces an alread...y-strong relationship between Veteran Sport Australia and the National Rugby League. The two organisations already work closely together around the ‘Battlefields to Footy Fields’ initiative. In addition to this, Veteran Sport Australia has national partnerships with sports such as Archery Australia and Bowls Australia, offering veterans and their families access to facilities, equipment and events to encourage them to try new sports both with their families and as part of the broader veteran community, reinforcing the importance of camaraderie in veteran wellbeing. 10.01.2022 A great night in the Hunter!
10.01.2022 It was a wet but very welcome return to refereeing rugby league this season for army veteran Troy Burgess. Troy was introduced to refereeing as part of the NRL - National Rugby League’s innovative ‘Battlefields to Footy Fields’ program. I would never have done refereeing if it wasn’t for the program, says Troy. I’d been struggling with mental health for a while. They’d started Battlefields to Footy Fields. One of my uncles is a referee and he mentioned it to me. I wasn’t ...really that keen. Just dealing with people I wasn’t really that comfortable with it at the time. He sort of talked me into it so I ended up doing it. Despite the challenges of being a new referee, Troy stuck with it and credits the program with giving him confidence and in helping him fit back into community life. The success of the Battlefields to Footy Fields program has highlighted that veterans are uniquely suited to the demands of refereeing. An important part of the program is involving veterans with their local refereeing association. It's exciting to see what the future holds for the program and we encourage veterans from around the country to reach out and get involved To find out more about the program and what it has done for Troy visit: https://veteransport.org.au/stories-article/a-perfect-match/ (Photo credits: Kylie Bartholomew and National Rugby League) #vsamovement #battlefieldstofootyfields NRL - National Rugby League
