24.01.2022 Instrument tape is often used by clinics to mark instruments that belong to each kit, however instruments can still be forgotten or misplaced, a better idea is to use photographic instrument guides. These ensure that all staff pack the kits right as they can see what instrument and how many. Very handy for new or junior nurses too! Did you also know that instrument tape is not recommended for use as it can provide a harbour for micro-organisms, and it can become brittle after autoclaving, potentially flaking off when inside a patient. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts

22.01.2022 Theatre clogs or dedicated theatre shoes should always be worn when entering sterile supply areas or theatres. Proper theatre clogs are made from an easily cleanable and antistatic material. The antistatic properties help limit the static contamination from being worn, such as lint and hair. They should regularly be cleaned and disinfected to help reduce contamination. They should never be worn outside the theatre and treatment area, and definitely not outside!! Whilst these theatre clogs look like the popular Crocs, Crocs normally have holes in their upper surface, exposing the feet to injury, and they are not made of an antistatic material. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts

20.01.2022 If a suspected arrest occurs it is important to quickly assess if the pet has any cardiac or respiratory function. If you are unsure if the patient and do not have the ability to assess the patient quickly, you should perform chest compressions immediately. There is less than 2% significant complications related to performing chest compression on a human or animal that still has a beating heart. Of those complications (heart arrhythmias) most resolve or can be treated with medication. The most common complications seen when doing CPR are rib fractures and muscle damage. Basic life support is limited to the ABCs (airway, breathing, circulation) of CPR. Recently recommendations have been changed to CABs because it has been shown that starting with cardiac compressions first offers a better chance of survival. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts

20.01.2022 Rats and Mice are omnivorous and will eat almost anything. Which is what has lead to their ability to survive anywhere, even in cities. For pet rats, a balanced diet is essential for long-term health. Many commercial diets are available on the market which can be supplemented with fresh produce. Rats typically require 10-20g of dry food per day whereas a mouse requires 5-10g dry food per day. Providing fresh food each day is essential to ensure food does not become contaminated and spoil. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts #Mice #Rats

20.01.2022 Fasting equine patients for a minimum of 8 hours prior to surgery is essential for reducing the volume of gastrointestinal contents. This is important to minimise the risk of gastric rupture, particularly during the induction process when the horse may suddenly drop to the floor as the anaesthetic agent takes effect. Additionally a full and heavy gut can greatly impair the movement of the diaphragm and subsequent lung function, resulting in hypoventilation and hypoxaemia of t...he patient. This is especially relevant for horses who are positioned in dorsal recumbency. Conversely, fasting for periods longer than 8 hours must be undertaken with caution, as after this time some horses may start to develop painful gastric ulcers (especially racing Thoroughbreds) or be subject to impaction colic. Fasting in young foals is contra-indicated. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts See more

20.01.2022 Performing pre-anaesthetic blood tests helps the vet to determine the kidney and liver function of our patients, as well as some other parameters. These organs are responsible for the metabolism (elimination) of the anaesthetic drugs we use, so checking that they work properly helps the vet to decide on the drugs to be used with that particular pet. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts

20.01.2022 It is not possible to differentiate between simple dilatation and dilatation and volvulus until an X-ray of the dog's abdomen determines whether the stomach is displaced. A right lateral abdominal radiograph should be taken to confirm GDV. These radiographs often show the stomach as a double bubble or boxing glove shape. This shape occurs as the pylorus is compartmentalised and dorsal to fundus. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts

20.01.2022 Blood loss reduces the circulating volume and perfusion, and therefore reduces the oxygen carrying capacity of blood. A low packed red blood cell volume (PCV) indicates blood loss and in the event of severe blood loss, oxygenation of the tissues is significantly compromised. Generally is a PCV falls below 20% a blood transfusion may be required. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts

17.01.2022 How would you know that autoclave steam has adequately penetrate your surgical kit? Steam Intergrator Strips be placed in the middle of packs and provide an indication that the steam has reached the centre of the pack. Many different strips are available on the market, and they vary in how well they monitor the sterilisation parameters. Some just verify that steam has reached it (much the same as indicator tape); some verify that the correct time, temperature has been reached and that saturated steam has reached the indicator. It is important to match up the right strip for the parameters you are using. It is recommended to use at least a Class 5 indicator strip in every kit that goes through the autoclave. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts

11.01.2022 All frozen/refrigerated blood products should be warmed to 37C before administration to prevent hypothermia. A warm water bath closely monitored is suitable if you do not have a blood product warmer. Once blood is warmed to 37C, it deteriorates rapidly so ensure you start your transfusion as soon as possible (within 30 mins) and complete it within 4 hours. Excessive heating will damage proteins and clotting factors and decrease the oxygen carrying capacity of RBCs, so ensure the warm water bath is 37C - don't use hotter water to speed up warming. When a rapid transfusion is needed, refrigerated blood can be administered without warming as a last resort. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts

10.01.2022 Anemia and bleeding disorders can be an indication for a blood transfusion. Many animals with chronic anemia however will tolerate a low PCV without clinical signs. A packed cell volume (PCV) of 20-25% is considered a minimum level in acutely affected animals however chronic cases will tolerate lower PCV's. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts

08.01.2022 Need to pressure test a Universal F (or other coaxial system)? You can't just hold your thumb over the end like you do a standard circle system! This will not detect any leaks in the fresh gas flow tube, only the expiratory tube. Instead, you need to block the end of the inspiratory tube. There are gadgets out there for this, but the end of a syringe also works!! #ACVN #VetNurseFacts

07.01.2022 Signs of fear and anxiety in dogs can include cowering with head and body low, tense muscles, tembling, head down with ears back, brows furrowed, panting / yawning / lip licking, salivation or apparent lack of control over urination and defecation, hypervigilant or looking distracted. It is best to put some time and effort into winning the confidence of these patients. Spend time with them, talk quietly and encourage them to come to you. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts

06.01.2022 Sterilisation completely eliminates or kills all micro-organisms, including spores, and is performed by using steam under pressure (autoclaves), dry heat, ethylene oxide (ETO) and other gases, or by using liquid chemicals for prolonged soaking times. Whenever autoclaves are used, they should be routinely tested with biological indicators to ensure they are working correctly. Items that are sterilised are considered to remain sterile until the package is torn, wet, or damaged. Sterility is a function of intact packaging, not time. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts

04.01.2022 Penrose drains are considered a passive drain and rely on gravity, hence the exit of the drain being positioned on the ventral aspect of the patient. Excess fluid will leak along the inner and outer surface of the drain and out of the wound. Penrose drains can be left uncovered or be covered by a sterile dressing. If a dressing is used, this must be changed in an aseptically and frequently, change must occur prior to strike through occurring #ACVN #VetNurseFacts

03.01.2022 The most commonly seen bladder stones in dogs are struvite uroliths (around 45 to 50% of the cases). However, other uroliths such as calcium oxalates, urate, silicate and cysteine crystals are also found. #ACVN #VetNurseFacts
