13.01.2022 TOP TIPS - Dealing with Summer Stresses Ensure your pet is safely inside and secure doors, windows and cat flaps. Allow your dog or cat to hide in an area where they feel safe. You can further increase this feeling of security by plugging in an Adaptil or Feliway diffuser. Make sure your dog or cat is microchipped. If they do escape, frightened animals can easily get lost. Close all doors, windows and draw the curtains, play calming music and / or have the tv on t...o help mask the noise of storms or fireworks. Comfort your pet in a reasonable manner. Promote calm behaviour by displaying calm behaviour yourself. Cats prefer to be left to cope on their own. Don’t get cross with or punish your pet, regardless of their behaviour, as it will only make them more distressed. Ask us for more information on how pheromones can help your pet or visit

11.01.2022 Heatstroke can happen quickly in animals, and without warning. This is often during the summer months but can also occur if your pet has been locked in a vehicle, left out in the sun without access to shade and/or water or even from exercise during a very hot day! Symptoms: Excessive panting and can be hot to touch Bright red gums and tongue which can turn to a blue tinge... Salivation Vomiting Diarrhoea Anxious pacing, lack of coordination, stumbling Seizures or strange behaviour Collapse and coma First aid If you suspect your pet has heat stroke, we recommend immediate first aid at home followed by an urgent visit to your local vet or emergency hospital if this occurs after-hours To apply first aid at home you can: Soak a towel in cool water and drizzle it onto your pet concentrating on the head, stomach, neck, inner thighs and pads of the feet. Wrap your pet in a cool wet towel, continuing to replace the towel with a cool, wet one. Don’t leave the towel on your pet as this can heat up. For larger pets, gently hose or bathe with cool water, followed by cool towels applied to the head and stomach. To avoid hypothermia, cool your pet slowly using cool water NOT iced water. Extra care should be taken with brachycephalic pets (those with short noses) as they can’t regulate heat effectively. It’s important to make sure your pet has plenty of accessible cool water sources and shaded rest areas.
