15.01.2022 Australia is now coming into the fantastic holiday weather for fun at the beach! As a family we love to bring our fur kids out for days of relaxation and fun on a boat or on the foreshore. Some of our fur kids love to splish and splash in the water and we need to keep them safe while they do. Even for dogs that are great swimmers they may become tired and need that extra help to stay afloat and, in an emergency, they will not be able to find safety as quick as we can. A grea...t device to help them out in the water and on a boat is a life vest! There are many different types from heavy duty for our more boisterous fur kids to cute smaller vests with some even coming with a shark fin! Swimming is great exercise for out fur kids especially ones that have joint issues as they are getting the range of motion and exercise without the pressure on their joints. WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A LIFE VEST BUOYANCY: It is important that the vest has enough buoyancy to keep your pup afloat. You want to find a vest that has floatation sections under the belly as well as the top and sides, there are also vest that have the floatation section under the neck which provides floatation for the head these are great for the snub-nosed breeds. HANDLES: It is great to find a vest that has a handle on the back this will help with lifting your pup out of the water onto a boat or out of danger, it is also great for holding them in one spot while they swim and exercise their legs. BRIGHT COLOURS: It’s great to find a vest that is bright in colour as it makes them more visible in the water for other boaters or water sporters’ to avoid them. SIZE: Making sure that they vest is the right fit, being comfortable for them and easy to move around in, being to big or too small can affect the function of the vest. Follow the measurement guides that will be provided when purchasing the vest. Life Vests are easily sourced online and in some specialty stores such as BCF which holds the Marlin Australia PFD Dog Floatation Vest. Amazon hold a few great brands also such as Outward Hound and Kurgo Surf N’ Turf.

Create a "safe space" within your house that your pet could retreat to if it becomes overwhelmed by too many people or loud noises. 2. Pay attention to your dogs body language. If they start showing signs of stress & anxiety - including lip licking & excessive yawning - take them away to their "safe space" so they can relax. 3. Make sure your pet is up to date with Vaccines and Parasite control 4. Try not too spoil your pet too much with human food, no matter how hard they beg you for it They don't understand the consequences and that fatty sausage on the BBQ could put them in to hospital.

02.01.2022 CAN YOU SPOT THE SNAKE? Armed with curiosity and natural hunting instincts, it is not uncommon for our pets to cross paths with a snake. In the warmer months, snakes become much more active. If you do suspect a snake has bitten your pet, call us ASAP.... How do I keep my pet safe from snakes? Unfortunately, there is no guaranteed way to stop your pet from being bitten by a snake. However, here are a few rules you can follow to reduce the risk of your pet coming in contact with a snake. 1. Keep your pet on a leash, and only walk on clear path ways. DO NOT walk them through deep grass, the bush or along creeks 2. Remove rubbish, building materials etc. from your backyard where snakes can hide. 3. Invest in snake-proof fencing for your property. 4. Remove food scraps from outside that may attract rats (and therefore snakes). 5. Keep your grass short. 6. If you suspect or know there is a snake, keep your pet away and get in touch with a snake catcher. How do I know a snake has bitten my pet? Signs of snake bites can vary depending on the species of snake, as well as the bite location. Common signs can include; Dilated pupils not responsive to light. Weakness in hind legs (which often leads to paralysis). Rapid and shallow breathing. Drooling. Anxiety. Depression. Bleeding from wounds. Shaking or twitching of the muscles. Vomiting and loss of bowel control. Red urine Signs of snake bite can appear within minutes, half an hour to 24 hours after an animal is bitten. Dogs typically show signs quicker than cats. What do I do if a snake has bitten my pet? There are some important things you can do to help your pet while you are on the way to the vet: Keep your pet calm and cool. Keep your pet still. Carry your pet if they need to be moved (such as to the car).
