25.01.2022 When travelling with dogs in the car, it’s important they are adequately restrained for both their safety and yours. Many car restraints for dogs aren’t thoroughly tested for safety, with reviews by Choice and the NRMA previously failing many of the available products as unsafe for people, pets or both. Make sure you research car restraints before buying and purchase a good quality restraint that has been thoroughly safety tested to protect both you and your pooch.
23.01.2022 Sweet lady Marnie, still looking youthful as ever at 13 and a half! The term "schnauzer" comes from the German word for "snout" and means "moustache", or "whiskered snout", because of the breed's distinctively bearded snout. #miniatureschnauzer #vobfurfam #vetsonbalwyn
21.01.2022 Sweet fellow Cruz was in at the start of the week for his annual health check. He must've missed the VOB team a bit too much ...as he decided to do something very cheeky and ensured an immediate visit back to us! While on a walk, he picked up and swallowed a soft fabric glasses pouch! With swift thinking from Cruz's mum and quick work by our team, we induced Cruz to vomit and he safely brought up the pouch in one piece (we always check ). Because we were able to retrieve t...he swallowed item, Cruz has now avoided any chance of a "foreign body obstruction", a condition that usually requires surgical removal. Phew! Check out Cruz's very adorable and slightly sheepish face! #vobfurfam Our pets can be very curious and sometimes when exploring household items (particularly soft fluffy things or things with string attached), they might accidentally ingest them! Be careful of what you leave lying around, especially if you have a young puppy or kitten as they are particularly inquisitive and could get themselves into trouble if unsupervised!
21.01.2022 Why is it recommended that kittens get their vaccinations in their first year? When kittens are young, they receive antibodies from their mother’s milk, which helps protect them from infection. But as they get older, they lose access to these antibodies and it takes a while for their own immunity to kick in. That’s where vaccines come in they protect against serious diseases while your kitten’s immune system is still growing. Call us today to book your kitten in for their vaccinations.
20.01.2022 Are you fe-line like you need a holiday? If you're planning a getaway this summer, it’s important to check your cat has everything they need before boarding. Make sure your cat’s parasite control and vaccinations are up-to-date. All catteries require proof of current F3 vaccination before accepting your feline friend. If you’re unsure whether your cat is fully vaccinated, or you know they’re overdue, give us a call today.
19.01.2022 At around twelve months old, your cat will be fully grown and will therefore have lower energy requirements. At this stage, they should be transferred onto a good quality, complete and balanced adult cat diet, to prevent excess weight gain. Consider the use of a neutered or indoor cat diet if your cat is to be kept purely indoors, as generally these pets have even lower energy requirements. Ask our team for dietary advice for your cat if you’re unsure!
18.01.2022 If you think your middle-aged or elderly pet is a bit less mobile than they used to be, book them in for a check-up! We can recommend supportive treatment options to suit every budget and pet.
17.01.2022 It's Freddy time! Have you seen a more handsome face?! Freddy is a Standard Poodle pupperino! Did you know that the Poodle is one of the oldest breeds developed originally as a water retriever, a job that required jumping into water to fetch waterfowl for hunters! Something tells us Freddy will be jumping into our arms for cuddles only #vobfurfam #vetsonbalwyn
16.01.2022 Heat stress is a risk to all pets, but particularly dogs and those kept in cages, such as rabbits and birds. All pets must have access to shade in a well-ventilated area, as well as constant access to cool, fresh water. Dogs should only be exercised in the early morning or evening. If your pets show signs of heat stress, such as open-mouth panting, collapse, or excessive salivating (dogs), contact us immediately. Let’s stay safe this summer.
16.01.2022 Cats have a natural instinct to scratch in order to maintain their claws, mark their territory, and just have a good old stretch! If your cat spends a reasonable amount of time indoors, it helps to provide them with two pieces of scratching furniture: a tall vertical, carpet-covered scratching post that allows them to stretch up fully during use, and a sturdy, stable horizontal scratching pad. Your furniture and your cat will thank you!
16.01.2022 Look out for these signs that your pet might be suffering from itchy skin. The sooner we settle an itch, the less likely your pet is to cause self-trauma and secondary skin infections. So if you notice your pet is itching, licking, biting, or rubbing, you should arrange a check up with us as soon as you can. PLUS! Get 20% off Hill's skin and food sensitive diets - contact us for more information.
15.01.2022 Cats can come into season multiple times a year and breed easily, so it’s important to have your cat desexed to prevent unwanted kittens and other potential issues. Cat shelters often have large numbers of kittens needing to be re-homed, so the best advice is whether your cat is male or female, do the right thing by them and get them desexed now! Contact our team for more information about desexing your pet.
15.01.2022 How often you should wash your dog depends on their breed, lifestyle and skin health. If your dog is a short-coated breed that lives outside, they probably only need to be washed with gentle dog shampoo twice a year. If you have a long-coated breed, or a dog that lives inside, or one that goes swimming regularly, you might want to wash more often. Dog’s don’t need to be bathed weekly, unless they have a skin condition that requires medicated shampoo.
13.01.2022 If you have changed your phone number or address since your pet was microchipped, then it’s time to update their chip details. Check the paperwork that came with your pet’s microchip, as often you can call or update details online. If you no longer have that paperwork, check your pet’s microchip on www.petaddress.com.au to find out which registry they are on. If you don’t know your pet’s microchip number, just bring them into the clinic and we can scan their chip for the number.
11.01.2022 Did you get a puppy during the pandemic? As puppies grow, their immune systems grow too. But, there is a window between when they leave their litter and become an adult where they are particularly vulnerable to disease. This is why it’s important we protect their health during the first year of their life. Vaccines provide crucial protection against deadly diseases, like parvovirus. Give us a call to book your puppy in for their vaccinations.
11.01.2022 Itchy Scratchy season - or ‘spring’ as it is more commonly known - can really affect your pet's quality of life. Parasites, grasses, pollen, dust mites, and moulds can all cause your pet to become itchy. If you are worried about your pet you should call us for advice. PLUS! Get 20% off Hill's skin and food sensitive diets - contact us for more information.
10.01.2022 Did you know that around a third of all pet cats and dogs are overweight? The easiest way to help your pet lose weight is to switch their food to a specially formulated low energy or weight loss diet. These diets are still complete and balanced, though they contain less energy to help pets gradually lose weight. While trying to lose weight, it’s important that pets don’t get any extra food or treats. If you’re worried about your pet’s weight, make an appointment with us today.
09.01.2022 Nothing can bring an otherwise tough dog to their knees like a torn nail. Torn nails can bleed dramatically, but the real issue is the exposed bundle of nerves and blood vessels in the ‘quick’, which can lead to significant pain and infection, if left untreated. It’s best to bring your dog into the clinic if they’ve torn a nail. If there is a lot of bleeding, you can gently wrap their foot in a towel and bring them straight down.
09.01.2022 Cheeky pupper Cassie's first visit to the vets! Welcome to the #vobfurfam Cassie was a little nervous at first, but we spent lots of time allowing her to explore the consult room, have a good sniff around and investigate the vet's stethoscope to make sure she felt comfortable before her physical exam. She also had her lovely big sister Cara with her for moral support Both of the gorgeous girls received clean bills of health and were very good doggos for their vaccinations! We're so excited to watch Cassie grow into those fabulous big ears! #vetsonbalwyn #puppyoftheday
09.01.2022 Have you been asked to bring in a sample of your pet’s urine before? Urine samples need to be free of contaminants, which means you should be careful when catching the urine. If you have a dog, use a clean plastic container to catch a sample when they squat or lift their leg. If you have a cat, you can collect a special non-absorbent litter from the clinic that you use in a clean litter tray to obtain a sample.

04.01.2022 As pets get older, their dietary requirements change. Older pets need less energy in their food but benefit from nutritional support that eases the symptoms of arthritis or cognitive decline. If you have a cat over 11 years of age, a small dog over 8 years of age or a large dog over 5 years of age, they could benefit from a specially-formulated diet for senior pets. Call our clinic for more information.
01.01.2022 After the year that’s been, we all need a holiday. And while Bali might be out of the question, there are plenty of things to see and do in Australia. If you’re planning on boarding your dog this summer, make sure their parasite control and vaccinations are up to date. All kennels require proof of current C5 vaccination before accepting your K9 friend. If you’re unsure whether your dog is fully vaccinated, or you know they’re overdue, give us a call today.
