24.01.2022 HOUSE TRAINING A PUPPY TIPS Avoid Noxious Treatment Scolding, smacking or rubbing pets nose in their urine or faeces after an accident is INEFFECTIVE! It may turn the act into an attention getting exercise or even worse cause the pet to anxiety urinate whenever you approach it. Most pets will be confused by your punishment and will be unable to associate it with the toileting.... Feed Your Puppy At Regular Times Dogs depend on routine - they feed and toilet at consistent times. Reward Elimination In The Correct Place When your pup is most likely to eliminate (after sleep/rest, a meal or after play), take your pup to the place where you want it to toilet and give positive reinforcement like Good Dog when they do the right thing. Choose a phrase like wee wees or toilet time and repeat over and over when the puppy is doing the right thing - soon you will only need to say the words and they will go to the toilet. Remember that sniffing, circling and squatting are all behaviours relating to toileting, so if you notice your puppy doing these actions, chances are they need to go! Puppies have not had their bowels and bladders conditioned to last overnight. Some tips to help: Keep your puppy in a designated sleeping area overnight Wake up and take your puppy to their designated toilet area as early as possible Reward copiously when they toilet When your puppy is toileting appropriately on a regular basis, you can stop rewarding every time and reward intermittently - this is an even stronger way of reinforcing the behaviour you want as they are never quite sure when the reward is going to come. Avoiding Accidents Supervise your puppy when they are in an area you dont want them to toilet. If it starts sniffing etc., take them immediately to their designated toileting area When you are absent, deny access to areas you dont want them to toilet - you cannot teach your puppy NOT to do something they can do when you are not there! Always ensure the have full access to their designated toilet area Success depends on YOUR diligence - with dedication, consistency and persistence your pup should be almost completely house trained within a month.

24.01.2022 How would you like an alien invading your heart? Think of your poor precious dog with a giant worm, up to 30cm long, living inside their heart and lungs. These worms cause obstruction, severe illness and eventually death. Heartworm disease is a silent killer in our dogs. Thankfully, it can be easily prevented. How is heartworm spread? Heartworm is spread when mosquitoes feed on an infected dog, picking up larvae (microfilaria) from their bloodstream and then deposit them int...o the skin of another dog. The microfilaria then travel through the tissues and bloodstream of this dog and make their way to the heart, growing into adult worms and producing new microfilaria to circulate in the bloodstream, and so on. The whole process from the first mosquito bite to adult worms and microfilaria takes 6-7 months. Adult worms can survive in the heart and arteries for 5-7 years. Is my dog at risk? Heartworm is a disease spread by mosquitoes and occurs in any area where mosquitoes breed. Previously, heartworm disease was more prevalent in tropical areas, but is now widespread over much of Australia. How does heartworm affect my dog? The adult heartworms cause inflammation of the arteries in the lungs leading to thickening and obstruction of the blood vessels. Interference to blood flow eventually leads to congestive heart failure. Symptoms include: Dry cough Lack of energy and reluctance to exercise Weight loss Difficulty breathing Distended abdomen (from fluid) Death in severe cases ONCE A YEAR HEARTWORM NEEDLES ARE AVAILABLE!! Take the worry away from remembering and giving monthly tablets.

22.01.2022 Its that time of the year where we have boxes of chocolates under the tree wrapped for christmas presents. Beware your dog can sniff them out unwrap them and then eat away at the chocolates! Most pet owners these days are fairly clued in to the dangers of chocolate in pets. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which are both toxic to cats and dogs as they can't metabolise these compounds as well as humans can. Dark chocolate poses a higher risk than milk chocolate. S...igns of chocolate toxicity may include vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures, tremors, and coma. The risk of chocolate toxicity directly depends on your pet's weight, how much they ate, and how dark it was. If your pet has ingested chocolate, you can calculate their risk of toxicity by inputting their weight, the type of chocolate, and how much was ingested into a chocolate calculator and know whether to rush your pet to the vet. http://www.askavetquestion.com/tools/chocolatecalculator.php See more

18.01.2022 We worry about our pets when we leave them on their own while were out, but what about when theyre right there with us: spending time outdoors, playing at the park, on a walk? Invisible, dangerous diseases that can be debilitating, or deadly, if your pet is not vaccinated. Vaccinations can help protect your puppy, dog, kitten or cat from some extremely dangerous and contagious diseases in the animal world.... If youre thinking your unvaccinated pet will be safe from diseases simply by avoiding sick pets, think again. Unfortunately, infectious viruses and bacteria can be left behind where a sick animal coughed or sneezed and if your pet then sniffs or licks that area soon after, they may be vulnerable to infection. After your pets initial course of injections, its important they receive an annual booster vaccination. Not only will the yearly appointment give you an opportunity to chat with your vet and discuss any other health or behavioural concerns you may have, itll help ensure you and your four-legged friend continue to live a long and happy life together! What do dog and cat vaccinations actually do? Vaccinations contain inactive strains of certain viruses or bacteria and help your pets immune system create antibodies to fight off the same virus or bacteria should they ever come in contact with it again.

13.01.2022 Long nails can cause pain for pooches if left untrimmed, which is why it is important to monitor your fur friends paws. Over time, long nails can curl downwards and cause damage to pets skin. They can also put pressure on toe joints resulting in pain and sometimes even arthritis. Daily exercise on hard surfaces, such as concrete, will help file down pets nails naturally. However, if your pet tends to play on softer surfaces their nails may grow long and require a trim.... We recommend coming in to visit us so we can trim your pets nails.

13.01.2022 During peak storm season find out how to prepare your pet during storm season. Storm phobia is a researched and proven distressed state of an animal which can be caused by the noise of thunder and visual stimulus of lightning. Some pets can sense coming storms long before humans can, which means they can go from placid and comfortable to agitated and timid very quickly. Here are a few tips to prepare your pet during storm season: Create a safe and secure space for all of ...your animals away from visual stimuli. For dogs a pet crate or quiet room which shields them from lightning is ideal. Make sure outside food and water bowels are heavy or weighed down, allowing pets for continued access without them being tipped out. Try Feliway (cats) or Adaptil (dogs) collars or diffusers which help calm and reassure your pet in stressful situations.. Keep cats indoors. Don’t tether your pets if they are outside during a storm because this can lead to injury if they try and break free. Don’t encourage fretting behaviour in your pet by patting or cuddling them or saying ‘its ok’ because this reinforces the behaviour. Instead, ignore the behaviour by providing distractions like their favourite toy and exhibiting calming responses. Alternatively if your experiencing problems you can see our vets for more behaviour advice or medication to help in these trying times. See more

06.01.2022 Congestive heart failure (CHF) is fairly common in dogs. Approximately 10% of all dogs, and 75% of senior dogs, have some form of heart disease. CHF itself is not a disease: it is a condition that is a result of heart disease. More specifically, CHF occurs when the heart is unable to pump an adequate amount of blood to the body, thus causing an increase in pressure and fluid that eventually leaks into the lungs and, less frequently, other major organs. 7 Signs of Heart Diseas...e in Dogs Dry cough that follows physical activity or intensifies at night. Shortness of breath or elevated breathing. Restlessness when sleeping. Rapid weight loss (over just a few weeks) Fainting which can look like a seizure. Potbelly caused by fluid build up. 02.01.2022 Ham and fatty offcuts It may seem strange that dogs (who many believe to be carnivores) can have a bad reaction to eating meat, but the culprit here is an overdose of fat, which can cause pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is actually one of the most common illnesses that vet clinics are inundated with at Christmas time. Why does this happen? Leftover ham, sausages, or the fatty offcuts from a Christmas turkey contain a lot more fat than your dog's body is used to ingesting in one go.... In an effort to digest all this fat, the pancreas can quickly go into overdrive and become painful, inflamed, and swollen in a condition called pancreatitis. Pancreatitis can cause vomiting, nausea, dehydration, and worsening illness. It can even leave your dog with a lifelong sensitivity to fat, and you will be left having to feed them a special therapeutic diet for the rest of their life. Best to resist the urge to 'treat' your dog and save the meat for your own leftover lunch on Boxing Day! If your pet shows any signs of vomiting or diarrhea you should seek veterinarian advice or treatment.

01.01.2022 Easter Alert!! Chocolate is poisonous to dogs; however, the hazard of chocolate to your dog depends on the type of chocolate, the amount consumed and your dog's size. In large enough amounts, chocolate and cocoa products can kill your dog. Why not chocolate?... The toxic component of chocolate is theobromine. Humans easily metabolize theobromine, but dogs process it much more slowly, allowing it to build up to toxic levels in their system. A large dog can consume more chocolate than a small dog before suffering ill effects. A small amount of chocolate will probably only give your dog an upset stomach with vomiting or diarrhea. With large amounts, theobromine can produce muscle tremors, seizures, an irregular heartbeat, internal bleeding or a heart attack. The onset of theobromine poisoning is usually marked by severe hyperactivity. The usual treatment for theobromine poisoning is to induce vomiting within two hours of ingestion. If you are worried or suspect that your dog may have eaten a large quantity of chocolate and they are showing any of the signs listed above, call your veterinarian immediately. If you have a small dog that has eaten a box of chocolates, you need to call and go to your veterinarian right away. Do not wait. Different chocolate types have different theobromine levels. Cocoa, cooking chocolate and dark chocolate contain the highest levels, while milk chocolate and white chocolate have the lowest. If youre dealing with any quantity of dark or bitter chocolate, err on the side of caution. The high level of theobromine in dark chocolate means it takes only a very small amount to poison a dog. Less than an ounce of dark chocolate may be enough to poison a 44-pound dog. Of course, never consider chocolate as a reward. Always provide healthy Hills Ideal Balance or Science Diet Treats or simply reward your dog with lots of love and attention.

01.01.2022 Hi I'm Henry! I came in for an Echocardiogram as Dr Hugo heard a murmur on my heart at my vaccination appointment. I came into the clinic, got lots of cuddles while the cardiologist listened, felt and used the Echocardiograph to see how my heart was functioning. I have mitral valve disease (which is very treatable) and will be monitored closely every 6 months and treated with medication to assist me in living my best life.
