01.01.2022 It is officially snake bite season here in Perth. In the past two weeks we have had 3 dogs bitten by snakes that came in, in critical condition. Luckily they all survived but a lot are not so lucky. Symptoms include sudden collapse, losing control of their bowels, shaking and unusual breathing. Some may appear to recover from this episode but it is vital that they be taken to the closest vet as soon as possible. Do not delay taking them to a vet as this can significantly imp...act their survival. Keeping dogs on a short lead when going for walks and not allowing them to walk through bush areas, will help reduce chances of a snake bite. Keeping cats indoors or in a cat run is the safest option as a lot of cats like to hunt and will get bitten. Lastly, if you find a snake in your backyard, please do not attempt to kill it as this is not only dangerous for you but they are a vital part of our environment and deserve to be respected the same way any animal is. There are many snake catchers that can be called to relocate the snake to a safer area. If you suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake, it is best to immediately take them to the closest available vet for treatment.
