20.01.2022 Did you know that most of the Do Not Feed lists are wrong?!!! Even some Vets still say this! The internet is littered with mis-truths even from what seem to... be super reliable sources. Often what happens is people mis-understand the details of a study and then mis-information spreads like wildfire. Avocado's are fine Mushrooms that you eat are fine Garlic is find More details... Avocados: In 2012, Proctor & Gamble funded and published study that took the pit, the flesh, and the skin of the avocado, ground it all up and fed it to dogs over a period of time and concluded that feeding a diet with avocado extract was well-tolerated by adult dogs and resulted in no adverse health effects. The mis-understanding comes from a report of 2 dogs on an avo farm who got sick. We only feed the flesh because the skin and pit ground up wouldn't taste very nice. The pit if whole can be a choking and blockage risk. Mushrooms Any mushroom that is safe for you to eat i.e. that you get from the supermarket is safe for your dog. The mis-understanding came from dogs eating wild toxic mushrooms and getting sick. Garlic Garlic is safe and healthy for dogs in "standard" amounts. Garlic is included in many dog food formulas. The mis-understanding comes from a 2000 study (yes, 20 years ago!) that found Garlic caused Heinz anemia in dogs but the point many people missed was that they used an extract not actual garlic cloves. Only FOUR dogs in this study were SUPER DOSED with garlic being 1.25 ml of garlic extract/kg of body weight (5g of whole garlic/kg) - what the study does not tell us is the weigh t of the dogs, so we don't know how much Garlic extract these dogs actually got. Now, to help you understand how much extract per kilo and what that would be in cloves...Planet Paws blog outlines that they were given approximately 5g of garlic per kg of weight. This is about one clove of garlic per kilo of weight. If the dogs averaged about 20kg (roughly 40 pounds), then the dogs were given about 20 cloves of garlic a day! WTAF - who wouldn't have a reaction?! Dr. Pitcairn, author of The Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats, recommends the following amount of fresh garlic for dogs, according to their size: 10 to 15 pounds - half a clove 20 to 40 pounds - 1 clove 45 to 70 pounds - 2 cloves 75 to 90 pounds - 2 and a half cloves 100 pounds and over - 3 cloves Dr. Messonnier, author of The Natural Vet's Guide to Preventing and Treating Cancer in Dogs, recommends one clove of fresh garlic per 10 to 30 pounds of weight a day to boost the immune system and cancer prevention.
