23.01.2022 Weekly Quiz #15 . . . .... False Pestivirus carriers are called Persistently Infected (PI's) and are infected as an embryo before around 120 days of pregnancy. They are unable to mount an immune response to this virus so vaccinating does nothing to a PI. To ensure that replacements are not Pestivirus carriers they must be negative to an antigen test. It is not a bad idea to also have them vaccinated but that will depend on your situation, talk to your vet about Pesti control. See more

22.01.2022 Quiz #16 . . . .... True (most of the time). In most circumstances there is little to be gained from drenching mature cattle (older then 3 years /2nd calvers) for round worms. But if cattle are doing it tough (condition score 2 or less) it is worth giving them all a drench. The other exception is bulls which will always be a bit wormier and need a drench in summer and late winter every year. Here is a link to some comprehensive advice on cattle drenching for Victoria.

05.01.2022 Quiz #16 . . . .... "Sheep are infected with footrot, farms aren't!" Footrot even in ideal conditions, cool and moist, will only last a maximum of 7 days off the sheep"s foot. In the heat of summer as long as it is dry it can't spread. We can use this to eradicate on farm or reduce spread . If you think you have footrot you can control and reduce spread with vaccines or footbathing and in summer move to eradication. Use a competent sheep vet and let them recommend a footrot contractor to help you out.
