23.01.2022 Green smoothie recipe below Green smoothies are cleansing and highly nutritious. They are a great way of consuming your daily greens as many people do not consume enough greens; and contains all the fibre from the whole fruit and vegetable rather than just the juice. Some of the benefits of green smoothies Boosts the immune system, cleansing and detoxifying, reduces inflammation, contains fibre to improve gut function, contains many antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, amin...o acids and important enzymes, and they are alkalizing to the body which means they can help protect against diseases, even cancer, as cancer can only survive in an acidic environment. Cleansing green smoothie recipe: 2cm cube of fresh ginger 2 sticks of celery 1 Lebanese cucumber 1 large handful of baby spinach leaves or other greens 1 small handful of fresh herbs - parsley and mint 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon or lime juice 1/2 cup of coconut water Blend thoroughly. (If you need a bit of sweetness, you can blend in a small piece of fresh pineapple) ENJOY YOUR GREENS!

20.01.2022 Calcium and Dairy Many people cannot tolerate dairy well. The most common intolerance is a sensitivity to casein which is a protein found in milk. Other less common intolerances can be due to whey or lactose. Many people are concerned that if they dont consume dairy they will be deficient in calcium. The nutrients in dairy are not well absorbed anyway due to the reduced digestibility of cows milk dairy in humans.... Foods other than dairy that are high in calcium are: Leafy, green vegetables (especially kale), broccoli, almonds, bonemeal, buckwheat, egg yolk, blackstrap molasses, soyabeans and tofu, turnip and turnip greens, seaweed, and fish where the bones are eaten such as salmon and small fish such as sardines and whitebait. A more in depth continuation of the dairy debate will be posted next week.

20.01.2022 Cooking oil. Coconut oil is one of the best oils to use in cooking due its high heat tolerance. Some oils have a very low heat tolerance and should only be used to dress salads and drissle over a meal once cooked. These oils are: Extra virgin olive oil, sesame oil and nut oils. ... If low heat tolerant oils are heated, they can smoke easily, oxidize and can cause free radicals in the body once consumed. Free radicals can have many harmful effects within the body including cell damage and inflammation. Ghee (clarified butter) is also good for cooking with, due to its high heat tolerance. Please note that in general - cold pressed, unrefined, extra virgin oils have the least heat tolerance but are the best for you in their raw form, whereas highly processed oils have the best heat tolerance but lack important nutrients due to processing... Ghee and coconut oil are the exception, but any oil will smoke at a very high temperature for a long period of time. Happy cooking!

15.01.2022 Turmeric The Indian spice turmeric has some great healing properties. Turmeric gets its yellow colour from its active ingredient, curcumin.... Curcumin is well known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. But this warming and bitter spice has many other healing benefits such as: helping to reduce cholesterol, improves protein digestion and helping to improve digestive issues, reduces joint swelling in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, detoxifies and decongests the liver, increases ligament flexibility, reduces pain, and helps to dissolve certain growths and fight certain cancers. Everyone knows to add turmeric to curries, but why not add it to scrambled eggs, omelettes and frittatas, add to salad dressings, add to sauted kale with paprika and a dash of salt, add to chicken marinades, toss it with roasted vegetables including cauliflower and potatoes, add it to rice, add to juices, or blend it into a smoothie. Be creative - and enjoy the anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits of turmeric every day!

12.01.2022 Has anyone heard of "The Dirty Dozen? There are some fruits and vegetables that really should be eaten organic. The following list are the worst affected by pesticide spraying: Apples... Apples are the worst effected due to their shape, the pesticides cannot run off, they sit on the top of the apple and slowly soak in. Some apples have a residue mark around the stem. Celery Capsicums Strawberries Nectarines Grapes Spinach, kale and other greens Lettuce Cucumbers Blueberries Potatoes Green beans Peeling may be a good option for removing some of the pesticides, but the skins contain valuable nutrients and fibre. The next best option is to make up a fruit and vegetable wash to help remove some of the pesticides and bacteria. Fruit and vegetable wash: Put fruit and vegetables into a mixing bowl sized bowl and fill with cold water, add about 1/4 of a cup of apple cider vinegar and soak for about 10-15 minutes with a plate on top to keep them submerged. Then scrub gently with a bristle brush (for fruit and vegetables only), rinse and eat. ORGANIC IS BEST!

10.01.2022 Dairy and alternatives For some people, dairy can be a good source of protein, vitamin B12 and other important nutrients, especially for those who lack protein and have general deficiencies such as thin, weak people with a tendency towards dryness. But for many people, milk can cause a variety of health issues. Milk that you buy in the supermarket is pasteurized, homogenized and full of chemicals, which makes it very difficult to digest and over time causes digestive weakness... and intolerances. Skim milk is not better. Dairy is one of the food groups that causes excess mucous conditions, such as: coughing up mucous, asthma, frequent colds, sinusitis and other sinus problems, allergies, tumours, cysts, constipation, colon issues, candida, excess weight and a thick, white tongue coating. Some dairy alternatives are: Almond milk (my favorite), cashew, soy, rice and oat milk. Goats milk tastes very similar to cows milk, but is much easier to digest than cows milk.

09.01.2022 Organic apples are back in Woolies! :)

07.01.2022 Liver and gallbladder... Feeling healthy and full of vitality can be very much determined by the health of your liver. 04.01.2022 Sugar cravings Consuming sugar suppresses your immune system leaving your body vulnerable to catching colds, causing skin issues, food allergies, it is highly inflammatory, and can prevent you from sleeping well. It causes many other health problems from candida, hormonal disturbances, brain fog, anxiety, ADD / ADHD, up to more serious conditions such as depression, arthritis, diabetes, dementia and cancer.... If you are a culprit of sugar cravings, this can be an indication of an imbalanced diet. One very simple change you can make to your diet is to eat more protein. Eating protein at every meal with vegetables can help to create satiety and balance out your blood sugar levels. Of course there is more to preventing sugar cravings than just eating more protein, but that is the basis, and a really good start. Please contact me if you like a more comprehensive nutritional consultation to dissolve your sweet tooth..

01.01.2022 Recipe - protein balls 100g raw almonds 100g raw cashews 2 tbsp protein powder ... 2 tbsp tahini 1-2 tbsp extra virgin coconut oil 1 tbsp cacao powder 1 tbsp raw honey 1/2 tbsp sesame seeds (optional) I use Garden of Life raw protein powder for this recipe (chocolate cacao), but any protein powder will be fine, although you may need to omit the honey as some of them are really sweet. Chop almonds in food processor into small pieces, then add cashews and process again until chopped into smaller bits. Add all other ingredients and mix well with 1 tbsp of coconut oil. If extra coconut oil is required, add it gradually, whilst mixing, until the desired consistency is reached. Grab small handfuls and press into chunks in your hand then roll into balls. Chill for at least an hour before serving. Store in the fridge or freezer. My own recipe - YUM!!
