18.01.2022 So sorry to hear this news, a great educator gone way too soon after a battle with stroke. Last time we saw Sonny was at our ABODA Conducting Summer School in January. Vale Sonny Chua.

18.01.2022 Dear ABODA Members and the Music Community, Following the recent announcement about stopping the playing of wind instruments and singing in our schools, ABODA and other stakeholders are currently having discussions about a course of action and writing letters to the Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, Hon. James Merlino and other ministers as appropriate. Rest assured that we are going to do everything that we can to help restore music to our schools safely. Stay strong and we will get through this together! Amanda Morrison President ABODA Vic

16.01.2022 Here is a (slightly modified) copy of the email send to current members- check your junk email if you haven’t received it, or maybe it’s time to renew/update your membership details! Dear Members, We have nearly made it to the end of 2020 - what a rollercoaster of a year it has been! I am very thankful that we were able to run some sessions in the form of Digital Drinks to keep in contact with many of you throughout the year. In 2021 we hope to run a selection of in-person an...d digital sessions to ensure that all members, including regional and interstate, can access our events. Our first event for 2021 and our AGM will be held in person, on Saturday 20th February. Please add this to your diary, and more information will be available soon. We also hope to run another conducting event in lieu of our Annual Summer School later in the year (possibly Easter school holidays), when we can be sure that we are able to have a gathering of participants and an ensemble in a suitable venue. Last month we held a Special General Meeting where a number of small changes to the constitution were made (all proposed changes were emailed to financial members on 1/11/2020, and all were carried) and the following resolution was approved; ‘That, due to the current global pandemic surrounding COVID-19, an additional year of membership to the Association be granted to all members who were current financial members as at 31 March 2020, or have joined the Association since that time, at no charge. This additional year will be applied to all members, regardless of their membership category, by extending their current date of renewal by a period of 12 months.’ In addition to the busy times in Victoria, ABODA National has been restructuring the association to ensure we comply with the current laws across the country. To keep everyone informed on this new structure there will be a Q&A session via Zoom on Sunday 31st January, 8pm, for anyone who has questions regarding the new National structure and constitution. The details for this meeting will be communicated at a later date. On behalf of the ABODA Vic/Tas committee, I would like to wish you all a happy and safe holiday season and we look forward to seeing you next year. Kind Regards, Amanda Morrison

15.01.2022 Our friends from ABODA NSW are offering Vic/Tas members access to this free event on tomorrow. Details are below.

09.01.2022 Welcome to Music Education Alliance Victoria. We are working for you to create a unified voice for our sector. We've established a Board and Sub-Committees incl...uding Communications, Research and Risk Mitigation, meeting weekly to action a range of measures. Board reps have met with the Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) and a DET representative to raise the importance of music, our concerns with the current restrictions and our willingness to work collaboratively to create workable solutions. Our views were very well received and we are now seeking a meeting with DHHS. The Risk Mitigation team has drafted a detailed plan for a phased, full return of music education. This will be presented to DHHS and DET. The Research team has compiled a wealth of international research, reports and papers on COVID-19 as it relates to music education. Board and Sub-Committee members are actively reaching out to parliamentarians on both sides to raise your concerns. Letters have been sent to Ministers of Health, Education and Arts, and the Chief Health Officer, offering our professional expertise as music educators and researchers to collaboratively create a roadmap back to full music participation. We look forward to keeping you up to date. Please invite your colleagues to like this page and share this post widely with your network.

04.01.2022 From our friend & long time committee member Andrew van Gemert: (Annual message) - Dear Teacher friends, It is getting to that time of year when we need to start talking to our Year 12 instrumentalists who are not going on to a music tertiary degree about how they are going to continue music after high school. Remind then of the fun they have making music and recognise what has been missing in their lives this year. There are many great community groups out there for your stu...dents to investigate. This list below (mainly concert bands) has been compiled over the years. Feel free to add in the comments. I usually ask my vocal, orchestral, and brass band friends to mimic this message with details of choirs, orchestras and brass bands but also feel free to add. Here are some suggestions: Australian Youth Band Ballarat Choral Society Ballarat City Brass Band, Ballarat Light Opera Company Ballarat Lyric Theatre Ballarat Symphony Orchestra Ballarat Wind Orchestra Boroondara Symphonic Band CLASAX clarinet and sax ensembles Cranbourne Lions Concert Band Creswick Brass Band (just out of Ballarat), Croydon Wind Symphony Diamond Valley Brass Band Eltham Concert Band Essendon Symphony Eureka Brass (Ballarat) Frankston Symphony orchestra Geelong Concert Band Grainger Wind Symphony Haddon Concert Band (Ballarat) Havana Palava Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra Heidelberg Wind Symphony Knox Wind Symphony Latrobe City Brass Band (former Morwell Citizens Band) Manningham Concert Band Melbourne Rainbow Band Memorial Concert Band (Ballarat), Monash Concert Band Monash Symphonic winds Monash Uni Philharmonic Society Oakleigh City Band Peninsula chamber orchestra Plan B Big Band (Boroondara) Riff Raff Radical Marching Band Salvation Army Bands Ballarat Sing Australia Southern Area Concert Band Southern Area Wind Band Sweet Mona’s Choir University of Tasmania Community Music Program Western Region Concert Band Westgate Concert Band No doubt I have missed some Please post more ensembles in the comments Spread the word to your students. 03.01.2022 Thank you to everyone for their support and suggestions. We are in conversation with a number of like minded organisations who are working collaboratively to develop a collective voice.
