25.01.2022 4-Wheeled Armoured Cars in Germany WW2 Camera On 21. Germany was at the forefront of the development of armoured cars during the First World War. In the early 1920s, the "Zusatz von Bologne" which was an amendment to the Treaty of Versailles allowed the German Army to produce armoured cars primarily for policing duties and eventually this gave rise to the military Sd.Kfz.13 series in the early 1930s. This publication covers German 4-wheeled cars in great photographic detail, focusing on the armoured cars and their crews as they dealt with the conditions and circumstances in which they found themselves. Rare photographs from the author's own collection have been used to illustrate this book; they were taken by ordinary German soldiers not by official army cameramen whose images are already well known to enthusiasts.
24.01.2022 The Brewster Buffalo New book, 64 pages. The Brewster Buffalo was born as the Brewster F2A for the United States Navy. It was the first monoplane fighter to be introduced into USN service. At the end of the thirties, with war approaching, many European countries were seeking new equipment, particularly modern fighters, and the Brewster looked promising and when war was declared in September 1939, requirements were drastically accelerated and the UK was among the first to plac...e an order. For the British, the Buffalo was not an obvious option as they were already producing two excellent fighters, the Hawker Hurricane and the Supermarine Spitfire, that were far superior to the American design. The Brewster fighter was initially rejected by the British Purchase Commission for this reason. However, the Air Ministry soon realised that production of both Hurricanes and Spitfires would not be enough to meet the RAF's increasing demands and the acquisition of foreign fighters was therefore seriously considered. By the end of 1939, all American manufacturers were overloaded and delivery delays repeatedly extended. Large orders could only be placed with the manufacturers not yet overloaded. The Brewster Corporation was one such manufacturer. Therefore, the Brewster 339 was the only suitable option and appeared to be a good alternative that left Hurricanes or Spitfires to theatres where the RAF was already engaged, like the Far East. When Japan invaded Malaya and Burma in December 1941, the Buffalo was the backbone of the RAF fighter force in the Far East. They faced very experienced Japanese fighter pilots who gave no chance to the young pilots freshly graduated from advanced training schools. The sacrifice of those young Commonwealth pilots, most coming from Australia and NZ would be in vain Burma and Singapore would be lost. About seventy photos and six colour profiles. See more

24.01.2022 The Douglas Boston & Havoc - The Intruders New book, 54 pages. The Douglas Boston or Havoc is one major aircraft of WW2. Designed as a light bomber, it proved to be very versatile and was used with success in various roles over all theatres of operations. In the RAF it served as a night fighter for defensive role (see SQUADRONS! 24), but in the same time the RAF found the type perfectly suited for offensive operations by night to harrass the Germans airfields when the Fighter... Command went to the offensive in the spring of 1941. This book tells how the Boston/Havoc was used between 1941 and 1943 in the intruder role from the UK by three squadrons, Nos. 23, 418 RCAF and 605. 52 pages, over 40 photos, 6 colour profiles. Colour Profiles: DG554/YP-X - 23 Sqn; AW397/YP-U - 23 Sqn; Z2290/TH-F - 418 Sqn; 8321/TH-G - 418 Sqn; W8370/UP-S - 605 Sqn. See more

16.01.2022 The Supermarine Spitfire Mk V : The New Zealanders New book, 40 pages. Paradoxically, the Mk.V, which ended up being the most numerous variant of the famous fighter built, was not even an intended development of the design. Indeed, it was only considered because of the abandonment of the Spitfire Mk.III. As the Luftwaffe was continually improving its formidable Messerschmidt Bf 109, the latest version of which, the Bf 109F, clearly outclassed the Spitfire Mk.II, the British h...ad no other option but to rapidly find a successor to the latter. At this time, at the end of 1940, the British did not know what the Germans' were planning and expected them to carry on undertaking daylight raids upon the return of nicer weather. The RAF, therefore, wanted to be ready to counter the new German fighter developments. A solution was soon found by mounting a Merlin 45 (former Merlin III), a simplified version of the Merlin XX, on a slightly strengthened Spitfire Mk.I or Mk.II air frame. Several Spitfires were thus modified, with either a Merlin 45 or Merlin 46, during the first weeks of 1941. The resulting feedback was good and the Air Ministry requested that Supermarine modify, as early as possible, Spitfires already on the assembly lines so they could be put into service as rapidly as possible. This is how the Spitfire Mk.V came to be. In 1941, the Spitfire Mk V progressively became the backbone of the Fighter Command and among the squadrons that switched onto the Spitfire Mk V, there is only one New Zealander squadron, 485. The operational usage of the Spitfire Mk V by the New Zealanders is here described in 36 pages, 32 photos and illustrated with six colour profiles. See more

02.01.2022 Billy Stutt and the Richmond Flyboys - the New South Wales State Aviation School 1915-1918 and Beyond New book, 314 pages. After 25 years of diligent research, noted Aero Historian Neville Hayes presents the often overlooked story of the training of pilots at Richmond, New South Wales, for service in World War I. While the Defence Department's Central Flying School at Point Cook struggled to keep training planes in the air, the NSW Government put together an Aviation School o...n Ham Common at Clarendon, complete with land, buildings, aircraft, experienced instructional pilots and mechanics, to train pilots for service abroad. After the War, the land and building became the fledgling Richmond Air Base, now the top arm of Aerial Defence in Australia. Liberally interspersed with many previously unseen photographs, the work is less a traditional history presentation and more the bringing to life the story of the student pilots, the part they played in the Great War of 1914-18, and the politics behind the scenes. This book is for the descendant families, many of whom know little more that 'he said he was a flyer'. And to keep alive the names of those who served the Nation, some of whom paid the supreme sacrifice. See more
