20.01.2022 To all interstate competitors at Sail Melbourne Given the recent outbreak in Sydney, Sail Melbourne are looking to gauge people's likelihood of being able to compete with the objective of deciding how many courses we need to provide.... We would also like to know, given the rapidly changing landscape, that in the unlikely event that we have to cancel the event, what is your drop dead date for us to cancel before you are significantly impacted. For example, for those from WA, when would you plan on leaving home, especially if you are driving. Our approach at present is that we would only cancel the event if Victoria has another outbreak, which as we have seen in several states now, is not out of the question, however, given the outbreak in NSW it is obvious that a number of people already entered will be very unlikely to be able to get to Melbourne. None the less, we are very keen for the event to continue and people to get back to competing in top class competition and would appreciate your feedback. If you could provide us with some feedback using the form below, that would be most helpful. Look after yourself every, and we hope to see you in Melbourne in a couple of weeks. Feedback: https://sailingresults.net/register/ Thanks, Paul Pascoe Event Chair

02.01.2022 Laser sailing is romantic! What could be more romantic than this Laser tale? Frant Bucek lashed his Laser to the deck of his keel boat and set off from RGYC to Fiji in search of adventure, and as it turned out, romance and love. Frant Bucek, a long term VLA member, took advantage of the easing of restrictions in Regional Victoria when he married Gale Hawkins on his keel boat at Geelong last weekend. Frant and Gale met in Fiji sailing last year as part of Frant’s sailing ...trip to Fiji, with Laser on his yacht for the Fiji Oceania Laser Masters regatta. They wanted to have a big wedding this year, with Gayle's family from America and other places around the world to fly in. Allowable numbers were down to two but with the move to step 3 level of COVID restrictions they were able to have ten people at the wedding, which allowed some of Frant’s family to attend. Frant said that having the wedding ceremony on the yacht he was on when he met Gale, in its mooring at Royal Geelong Yacht Club, was the ideal place to have the wedding. His two elder sons and their wives were to join them on a friend's yacht next to it. See more

02.01.2022 The Victorian Laser Association (VLA) is pleased to announce that Sandringham Yacht Club (SYC) will be the VLA training hub in metropolitan Melbourne. Training will be provided for youth and masters sailors using the combined resources of the VLA and SYC, and we look forward to releasing our combined training program for 2021 in the near future. Transition coaching will be provided by SYC coaches who will have access to the five brand new VLA laser 4.7’s, and performance coa...ching will be provided by the new VLA head coach and approved VLA coaches. SYC was the host club for five events during the Laser Summer of 2020 and the sailors that participated know that SYC has the resources, professionalism, staff and volunteers to be a fantastic resource for Victorian Laser sailors. The excellent facilities and the number of training programs for junior and youth sailors made SYC the preferred choice of the VLA. VLA youth sailors can join SYC as Youth members (under 25) for $8 per month. Intermediate membership (under 30) is $33 per month. For the master’s sailors SYC has agreed Laser sailors can utilise the SYC Sail Pass to access the club. The Sail Pass membership is $15 per sail and can be used 30 times within two years before you join the club. There are other membership categories so please visit https://syc.com.au/membership/ to see the benefits of each membership category. SYC as the VLA metropolitan training hub will enable the VLA to provide after school training in metropolitan Melbourne and continue the popular Green Point twilight sessions established by Mark Tonner-Joyce. The VLA understands that a number of sailors are members of other clubs but the establishment of a VLA hub in metropolitan Melbourne provides a base similar to those in other states to grow the class and provide a central hub for after school/work sailing. The VLA looks forward to working with SYC to develop the metropolitan training hub providing a great training resource for all Victorian sailors. Sandringham Yacht Club
