25.01.2022 Today we would have been raising the flags for NAIDOC Week 2020! Like most events, NAIDOC has been postponed, to November 8-15... but every day we should observe the importance of this week and what it represents... The origins of NAIDOC Week can be traced back to the Aboriginal rights movement. It started as a day of mourning in 1938, and over the decades the hard work of Volunteers brings community together to recognise our achievements through key events: Awards Night..., Flag Raising, Pride Night, March and a Gala Ball. We need to celebrate all who have contributed to Victorian NAIDOC, getting it to where it is today, even when the odds are stacked against us. Its something we are so proud of! Lets keep it strong and support our people who dedicate themselves to the values and meaning of this important time. As the current Chairperson, I say now, to the current and passed Committees your work is so very important, you give so much of your time and hearts as Volunteers... you make your ancestors proud... you will be acknowledged. Stacie Piper Chairperson #alwayswasalwayswillbe #VicNAIDOC2020

20.01.2022 Tyrown Waigana, a Perth based artist and designer, has been named as this years winner of the prestigious National NAIDOC Poster Competition. His winning entry - Shape of Land - was judged by the National #NAIDOC Committee to have best illustrated the 2020 NAIDOC theme: Always Was Always Will Be. Waigana, a proud Noongar and Saibai Islander, has previously been named as one of WAs best new and emerging Indigenous artists.... According to the 23-year-old, his winning entry depicts the Rainbow Serpent coming out of the Dreamtime to create this country and how we are strongly connected to it. The Rainbow Serpent is represented by the snake and it forms the shape of Australia, which symbolises how it created our lands. The colour from the Rainbow Serpent is reflected on to the figure to display our connection to the Rainbow Serpent, thus our connection to country. The overlapping colours on the outside is the Dreamtime. The figure inside the shape of Australia is a representation of Indigenous Australians showing that this country - since the dawn of time - always was, and always will be Aboriginal land, Mr Waigana added. To find out more about this years artwork and winning artist and to download a digital copy of the 2020 National NAIDOC Poster visit the NAIDOC website. Free printed copies of the 2020 National NAIDOC Poster will be available in coming months. #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe #Indigenous #Aboriginal #TorresStrait #FirstNations - #regrann

01.01.2022 PLEASE SHARE VICTORIAN NAIDOC COMMITTEE STATEMENT: NAIDOC WEEK EVENTS 2020 Due to the ever changing nature of events, we are excited to share the following:... The National NAIDOC Committee have postponed National NAIDOC Week 2020 until November 8-15 due to the impacts of coronavirus and associated restrictions. This years national theme is: Always Was, Always Will Be. Given the current challenges faced by the Community, we have experienced big changes, the Victorian NAIDOC Committee have also decided to postpone our events to be held in line with the National NAIDOC Week in November. That said, we do feel it is important to check-in and create a space to come together as best we can during these times and make sure that we dont miss this opportunity to celebrate Aboriginal Communities, Histories and Cultures. Therefore, we are excited to announce that we will be partnering with Aboriginal Victoria, 3KND, Arts Centre Melbourne, VACCHO and Victoria Together for an online concert. This online concert will be streamed on Saturday 11 July and will feature some well-known Aboriginal musicians and entertainers, stay tuned for further information. If your organisation or community group has capacity to hold an online NAIDOC event, we encourage you to do so. You may wish to share your perspective on NAIDOC Week, highlighting how you have been able to support Community in the recent months. Its important that we celebrate NAIDOC whenever we can, anytime of the year. We are strong and proud in our culture and we should take any opportunity we have to showcase this. We hope that you can join us on Saturday 11 July for the deadly online concert!
