25.01.2022 Photo credits: Carol Gurney WORKSHOP RECIPES, TIPS & NOTES We had a lovely family friendly turnout at our "Fizz & Pickle" spring workshop on fermentation. New friends and acquaintances, homemade fermented and pickled nibbles and sparking lemonade in a convivial atmosphere - what's not to like? We started off with tastings of lacto-fermented (brine-based) nasturtium seed pod 'capers' and radish and a classic Chinese style sweet & sour pickled vegetable medley (carrot, cucumbe...Continue reading

23.01.2022 Further adventures in home fermentation. This recipe for Dandelion 'champagne' actually works. Dandelions abound in our garden. They are edible, leaves can be used in salad, roots roasted and ground to make a chicory-like coffee substitute, and the flowers make a lovely tea and also wine!

23.01.2022 Phew another awesome day in the garden! Members helped with a busy bee for the fruit trees. Manure, newspaper and mulch were put down before we put the nets up to help with pest management. A sausage sizzle helped keep everyone going. Glad to see both new and old members helping out!

22.01.2022 Hi there, Anyone interested in helping out this weekend? This is a great community initiative!

22.01.2022 Our garden is looking really lush and tidy after this morning's busy bee. This November has been unusually wet and a boon to the garden. A dedicated crew of members braved the spring showers to do masses of weeding and pruning, which kept our compost crew busy. Gardeners work in all sorts of weather! Plus, a lovely visit from our amazing neighbours, the WA Apiarists' Society, who run the hives in the adjacent sump, bearing gifts of honey. #VPCGA #busybees #communitygardens #symbiosis #Kambarang #ComeGrowWithUs

21.01.2022 Some photos of our garden taken from the balcony of Sonder Cafe next door before the fruit tree netting was put up. How green it looks! Still some colour from the bright pink geraniums and late poppies in bloom.

19.01.2022 Bees, sunflowers and the last of the nasturtiums. There was at least one bee in every sunflower on this plant.

10.01.2022 Quite adorable. Gardener builds a special veggie patch for a family of groundhogs.

09.01.2022 RIP GEORGE. A belated farewell to George the friendly stub-tailed marbled gecko who was a long term resident in the left corner of our small worm fridge. George met an untimely end a week ago during a regular maintenance of the worm farm. His fate was sealed when a large magpie picked him up and flew off with him, much to our dismay. George is survived by two younger geckos who maintain residence in the fridge in a thriving community of worms, slaters, mites and cockroaches. We will miss his gentle curious ways and goofy stub-tailed charm.

09.01.2022 Gardens are ecosystems! There is definitely a community of insects in this patch! Dusk is when many insects rest amongst the foliage. Apart from the pair of lovey dovey ladybirds, a really shy but eyecatching bright yellow flower spider, hoverflies and metallic coloured flies were amongst the many insects spotted in just one patch where silverbeet is in flower.

09.01.2022 How is our garden looking this weekend? Lovely and green after the late spring rains. The pomegranates are coming along. #VPCGA #ComeGrowWithUs #comminitygarden #Kambarang

09.01.2022 Quite an inspiring series about actor/photographer Dan Paris and his family's ventures into Consumer Supported Agriculture (CSA) market gardening and regenerative agriculture in Esperance. Enjoy!

09.01.2022 The poppies are certainly amazing this year in our garden. The view of our garden from the gym next door must be pretty splendid right now. Hopefully all the gym and yoga club members are enjoying the flowers too.

07.01.2022 Hi All. We still have some spots left for our interactive spring workshop 'Fizz & Pickle' - tomorrow Saturday 10.30am 17th October, corner of Salford St and Albany Highway. Fun and easy home fermentations and pickling, including nasturtium 'capers', lemonade and ginger beer! Tastings available. Have a walk round our pretty garden. Our Grow & Cook Book ($10) contains some recipes too. Free entry for members. Book here: https://www.trybooking.com/BLUYD

06.01.2022 Ladybird love-athon in the silverbeet patch. Spring is the season of love. And it is hump day after all. We were watching them for an hour, then gave up and went home. Ladybird mating sessions can last 8 to 9 hours. We hope they make lots of babies. Like hover flies, ladybirds prey on aphids and other vegetable pests so we're very happy to be sharing our garden with these cheerful critters. #lovedup #lovegoals #ladybirds #makelovenotwar #lovebugs

05.01.2022 The good folks at WAAS have hives in the sump next to the community garden in Read Park. The bees are good neighbours as they help to pollinate fruit trees and vegetables in the garden. #goodneighbours #busybees #communitygardens #welovevicpark #lovevicpark #vicparklife

04.01.2022 It's hover fly breeding season and we have heaps of these cute friendly bee-like creatures helping with pollination in the garden. They don't sting. Their larvae feed on aphids and whitefly. Plus they have a very characteristic hovering flight pattern appearing to travel at warp speed for short distances then hovering in a stationary spot. Quite fun to watch. https://www.gardeningknowhow.com//hover-flies-in-gardens.h

03.01.2022 Eggsellent Seedlings are the perfect school holiday activity for parents and grandparents. This activity is ridiculously easy and the perfect way to teach child...ren how to plant, care for and grow their own little seedlings. Any old eggshells can be used for this activity, just give them a good wash out first. It is more than ok to use uneven eggshells, just make sure you have at least half the shell intact. Arrange your eggshells in a paper egg carton. Carefully fill the eggshell with potting mix and a couple of pellets of Gyganic, add your chosen seeds and water in. Eggshells have no drainage holes, so be careful not to over water the seeds. Fill a spray bottle with water, a gentle misting of water each day will be more than enough. Position your eggshells back into the egg carton, place in a warm spot and watch them grow! Once your seedlings are established, gently crack the eggshells with your fingers and plant into your garden. The eggshells will decompose and add extra nutrients to the soil and your seedling. And an added bonus, snails hate eggshells! Happy gardening!

02.01.2022 Goodnight, little garden. Sweet dreams. What a lovely balmy spring evening. #spring #communitygardens #VPCGA #kambarangnight #nightgarden
