25.01.2022 Members of the RSU have now been trained in the new digital SES radio system that is currently being rolled out across the state. The new radios are equipped with a number of features that will enhance the way we can communicate with operational units and regional headquarters during major events (such as floods and storms)... and they look pretty cool too!

24.01.2022 Over the next few days we are expecting some warm/hot weather. A reminder to NEVER leave kids, adults or pets in hot cars. The temperature inside a parked car can double within minutes.

23.01.2022 It has been a busy couple of days for SES Units. Remember to tie down all loose items in your yard and beware of fallen trees across roads. Call 132 500 for all flood and storm emergencies and 000 for life threatening emergencies.

21.01.2022 On Monday night, the South West RSU supported the SES Geelong Unit and SES Corio Unit to complete a land and water search training exercise. This exercise simulated what may occur when we are asked to assist police on a search for items of interest. In this scenario, SES volunteers were asked to complete a search of an area of the Barwon river via boat, and the park area near the river on foot. Specific tasks for the RSU members included deploying a Sector Commander to coordinate the land search activities, as well as supporting the deployment and operation of the regions Field Operations Vehicle. Well done to the Geelong unit for organising the exercise and providing our members with this important training opportunity!

21.01.2022 Three members from the South West RSU participated in forklift training over the weekend. Congratulations to all three members who passed their assessment! Being able to drive a forklift enables our members to provide logistical support, including moving sandbags in our warehouse.

18.01.2022 Volunteers are the backbone of Australias communities. This DoSomething Day, join us in making a real difference. Dont put it off any longer; volunteer with VICSES today! www.ses.vic.gov.au/volunteer

17.01.2022 Last night was the final training night for our ex Controller, Graeme Phipps. After 26 years of volunteering with VICSES, Graeme is hanging up the orange overalls and is looking forward to spending more time with his family. We thank Graeme for his service and wish him all the very best!

15.01.2022 Last night's operational communications training was hosted by our friends at Geelong Unit. It was a great insight into how the SES dispatch system works, from the moment a member of the public calls 132500 right through to a unit closing out a job.

14.01.2022 For any emergencies relating to flood and storm, call 132 500. For life threatening emergencies call 000.

13.01.2022 The RSU is joining forces with SES Corio Unit tonight for a flood intelligence training exercise. Well be heading out to gather photos of key known flooding hotspots, using a mobile app to send back to our IMT for just-in-time analysis.

12.01.2022 Vicses OTWAY UNIT joined Ambulance Victoria CFA South West Victoria Police Colac Otway Shire Council and community members on Sunday when Vic Emergency Commissioner Andrew Crisp officially opened the Lavers Hill Community Fire Refuge. #weworkasone Check out what happened below:

10.01.2022 Due to the hot weather and the associated fire risk, an Incident Management Team (IMT) is in place today at the Geelong Incident Control Centre (ICC). This team is made up of representatives from various agencies including CFA, SES and DELWP, who work together to assess and manage the situation. The RSU often provides operational and logistical support to these teams, and also has members working towards IMT qualifications. #weworkasone

10.01.2022 Do you have clutter lying around your house, balcony or yard? This could lead to potential danger during an emergency event, such as a storm, flood or fire. Make a spring clean a priority this September!

10.01.2022 Last night, members from the RSU attended the Geelong regions VICSES Community Engagement Advisory Group (CEAG) meeting to hear about the Red Cross RediPlan (https://www.redcross.org.au//em/resources-about-disasters) - a community guide for preparing for disasters and making an emergency plan. Experience shows that those who plan and prepare for emergencies can reduce the impact of the emergency, and can recover more quickly afterwards. VICSES volunteers play an important... role in community preparedness through education and advice for those at risk of an emergency event. This includes school visits, community group talks and developing partnerships with other community organisations such as the Red Cross. Sounds like something you could do? The RSU is always looking for more volunteers to support the community engagement activities in the South West region. #lookatwhatwedo #youcantoo #weworkasone

10.01.2022 Tonights training involved supporting our good friends at the SES Geelong Unit in a boating exercise. RSU members were responsible for receiving GPS coordinates from the boat and support vehicle, and then marking these on maps. It was a great opportunity to test our radio operation and mapping skills!

07.01.2022 Dont like winter? While most SES units are outside braving the cold, the South West RSU mostly trains indoors. The South West RSU is a non-operational unit that provides logistics, welfare, training, communications, community engagement and administration support to the operational units across the South West region. The unit is also a key contributor to incident management in the South West, filling logistics, planning, intelligence and command roles at the Incident Control Centre (based at the same office location at 90 Furner Avenue) and Divisional Command Points across the region during emergency situations. This weeks training involved learning about the various IT systems we use for incident management. #lookatwhatwedo #youcantoo #joinVICSESnow

02.01.2022 What will you be doing this Fathers Day? Matt Bennett, pictured with son Ethan, is an active member of VICSES South West Regional Support Unit (RSU). He is one of more than 5000 SES volunteers across the state that support their communities to better prepare for and respond to emergency events such as flood, storm, tsunami, earthquake and landslide. VICSES also operate the largest road rescue network in Australia.... Matt will be hoping to spend his first Fathers Day relaxing with Ethan and family members, rather than responding in support of emergency events. You can help the Matt enjoy Fathers Day by going to the SES (www.ses.vic.gov.au) website to find out how you can better plan for emergency events to reduce their impact; find out what to do before, during and after emergency events or download your own Home Emergency Plan. If you are driving this Fathers Day, please stay safe on the roads check out the Towards Zero safety messages by following this link: https://www.towardszero.vic.gov.au/s/why-safe-people-matter

01.01.2022 Introducing the new South West RSU unit management team!
