24.01.2022 'Police and PSOs have the right to film you, and to use that footage (in edited form, if they wish) in prosecuting you. But you do not have the right to access that footage in your defence. If police and PSOs have nothing to hide, there can be no justifiable reason to prevent the release of their body camera footage. And if they do have something to hide in cases of corruption or brutality or forced confessions, say there is every reason, on the principle of justice for a...ll, to compel them to release it. Every reason, that is, except the law as it currently stands.
23.01.2022 Raise the Rate!
23.01.2022 Aran Mylvaganam, Vic Socialist member and former candidate, is organising food aid for Tamil refugees through the Tamil Refugee Council because refugees on bridging visas have been left destitute by the government's refusal to provide income support and work rights. We think he's an important example of what type of community organiser we need. We need people who will not just fill the gaps where the government fails people, but people who are also willing to speak out and p...ressure the government to change its policy, to hold the government to account. Refugees, temporary visa holders, international students, the unemployed should not be forced to rely on charity to survive. Many, many people before us fought for things like government unemployment benefits during the Great Depression, so that we didn't have to line up at moralising Salvos soup kitchens. If we just provide the charity without public criticism, we let the government off the hook and essentially privatise what should be government provided income support and services. https://www.facebook.com/KathLarkinVicSoc/videos/389736755555503/

19.01.2022 Another day of police thuggery and successful defiance in NSW, this time by hundreds of staff and students against uni cuts. The ban on protests must be overturned! Like the page Democracy is Essential - Restore the right to protest in NSW for updates on campaign
17.01.2022 Victorian Socialists comment on the State government Social Housing Blitz The recent ‘Big Housing Build’ announced by the Andrews government allocates $5.3 billion to new affordable and social housing units, promising to build 9,300 social housing units over the next 4 years. This has been hailed as a reinvigoration of social housing spending across Victoria. Unfortunately the Big Housing Build falls well short of what is needed to meet demand for social housing in Melbourne...Continue reading

14.01.2022 For Darebin friends
14.01.2022 For a few short months this year, the JobSeeker rate lifted unemployed workers just above the Henderson poverty line. For the first time, unemployed workers weren't skipping meals. With the $300 a fortnight cut in September, millions were plunged back into grinding poverty, struggling to pay rent, bills, school and medical expenses. The mental stress of not knowing if you will be able to afford life's necessities has returned. On January 1st the government is preparing for a...nother savage cut to JobSeeker and from March, a return to $40 a day. As the graph shows, for too long unemployed workers have been languishing on starvation benefits, falling further and further below the poverty line. We can't let the government get away with this. Join the protest on December 12, 1pm. RALLY: Stop The Cuts To JobSeeker Demand the full coronavirus supplement is restored.
14.01.2022 Mourn the dead and fight like hell for the living.
14.01.2022 A completely preventable death today, the industrial murder of a 23-year-old. So far, just hours after the collapse, we already know two damning facts: (1) the university wanted this building ready for Semester 1 so they cut a deal with the company (LendLease) to have the site working at an intense pace; and (2) construction workers and the union reported last week that the then only half-completed glass ceiling was already appearing to be causing the steel frame to buckle, but some bloody surveyor inspected on behalf of the company and essentially said ‘nah, she’s all good, keep piling the glass into it’.
12.01.2022 From January 1, JobSeeker will be cut to $50 a day or $715 a fortnight. The payment is currently $815 a fortnight, which is still below the poverty line. This will lead many back to a situation of skipping meals and medications. We need to fight to restore the rate at the start of the pandemic which lifted so many out of poverty so that people were no longer forced to send their kids to school without a packed lunch. Keep the date of December 12 free for a planned protest against the cuts to JobSeeker.
07.01.2022 It's 50 years since 15 October 1970 when the Weat Gate Bridge snapped killing 35 workerd and injuring 18 others. This act of industrial murder devastated many working class families, particularly across the western suburbs. This graphic essay created by Sam Wallman, was published in the Guardian today as a contribution to the commemoration. It was made in collaboration with Elizabeth Humphrys, Sarah Gregson and Jacinda Woodhead. Sam was also supported by the West Gate Bridge ...Memorial Committee, Rosie and Stephanie Convery. Sam is a member of the Workers Art Collective and Victorian Socialists. This isn't just a question of marking an historic event. Just two days ago, a 23 year old construction worker was killed when a glass ceiling came crashing down at a construction site at Curtin University. The design was flawed, corners were cut, costs were cut and there was a huge pressure to speed up production to get the building completed. The workers were hired by a subcontracting company. Having witnessed their workmates death, only hours later, workers received a text to say they were stood down from work. Just heartless. It's a reminder of why we put so much effort into building strong unions at work. It's so everyone can return home to their families after a days work. "We mourn the dead, but fight like hell for the living."
06.01.2022 People before Profit. Vote [1] Andrew Charles, climate scientist and trade unionist, if you live in the Stony Creek Ward - Maribyrnong - Braybrook, Tottenham, West Footscray, parts of Maidstone.
06.01.2022 Poster for Friday's Protest: Justice for War Crimes in Afghanistan! Please share widely, and print to put in your window and around your local area. The extent of the violence and cruelty in the recent revalations is shocking, but we know that with every military expedition comes the generation of racism, dehumanisation of the 'target' population, violence, murder and destruction.... Join the Victorian Socialists and the Melbourne Antiwar Alliance in protesting not just these recent gruesome revelations but the war and occupation itself which has resulted in immeasurable suffering and hundreds of thousands of lives lost. In order to comply with the health regulations we will be holding rallies at two locations, as well as have possible back up overflow locations to keep participants no higher than 50 per location. To ensure we keep the numbers at 50 please register attendance here: https://tinyurl.com/y6zfp3lw This will be a covid safe event. Please remember your face masks and hand sanitiser, we will also have some on hand for those in need.

04.01.2022 City of Melbourne councillors shamefully endorsed the Labor government's sell off of public housing land to private developers. We need to expand the public housing stock, including housed suitable for families.
04.01.2022 At the first formal meeting of the new council I acknowledged that we meet on the land of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Bunurong peoples of the Kulin Nation. S...overeignty was never ceded. Aboriginal people continue to face systemic racism in this state. No police officer has ever been found criminally responsible for the murder of an Aboriginal person. Just this year the legal system determined that that Tanya Days killers won't be held accountable despite the Coroner finding an indictable offense may have happened. https://www.facebook.com/Justicefortanyaday It's not just Rio Tinto who commit acts of cultural genocide in 2020. It's the "progressive" Vic State Labor government who destroy sacred sites as well. Solidarity with the Djab Wurrung people who have fought hard for many many months to defend their sacred trees. Shame on the State government, VicRoads and VicPol for felling the majestic and hugely culturally significant Directions Tree and for arresting cultural defenders. https://www.facebook.com/Dwembassy #NAIDOCWeek2020 #NAIDOC2020
04.01.2022 City of Melbourne Councillors voted on Tuesday to endorse the Public Housing Renewal Program, i.e. the sell-off of public housing land. We expect Labor Party members to back this attack on public housing residents, shamefully the motion was seconded by Greens Councillor Rohan Leppert.
04.01.2022 On October 12th 1992, Indigenous people who would later be known as Zapatistas, toppled the statue of the conquistador Diego de Mazariegos in San Cristóbal de l...as Casas, Chiapas, during the 500-year march of the so-called discovery of America. Victorian Socialists stand in solidarity with Indigenous people around the globe fighting for their rights to self-determination and challenging the ongoing theft of land and water, the destruction of culture and state repression.
