25.01.2022 Excited about this Ram we bought from Glendonald Poll at the Bendigo Online Ram Sale. He is by 91 who is by Mercury. 91 has bred 3 top sons the last 3 years selling for $10,000 $26,000 and $10,750. He cut 14kg and has a very deep crimping, well aligned wool. We think he will do a good job smartening up our wools. Cost- $10,750... M - 19.5 SD - 3.2 CV - 16.4 CF - 99.6 See more
24.01.2022 Off the back of three of our lowest rainfall years on record we received good rain in February and have had follow up since. We were pleased with how our ewes scanned this year considering the run they’ve had. 80% were scanned in lamb and they are hitting the ground now
24.01.2022 Shearing is all done and dusted for another year at Victoria Downs. Very happy with how the sheep cut considering the start to the season they had. Averaged 6.5kg in the grown sheep and 5.8kg across the board. Thanks to everyone who came and got the job done for us.
24.01.2022 Calves are hitting the ground at Victoria Downs lambs will be here next month love this time of year!!
20.01.2022 Poll AI ewes coming in to take some wethers out. Plenty of lambs among them. There’s always something going on!!
19.01.2022 This past week should have been spent preparing for and now enjoying some time in Barcaldine at the Westech Field Days. Instead we are looking forward to heading there in 2021. We do have rams available for sale so if you are wanting to increase the wool cut of your flock and put some frame into your sheep then please contact us. We have plenty of quality Merino and Poll Merino rams ready for work.
19.01.2022 Another purchase to be excited about here at Victoria Downs. Bought from Lachlan Merino’s for $7,000. Out of a very good One Oak Ewe by Lachlan 62. His mother won Grand Champion Ewe in Sydney in 2013 and his father is a highly regarded Ram. With this pedigree we are very interested to see how he breeds on.
16.01.2022 Shows ewes enjoying some time in the sun
15.01.2022 Our 2021 Show Team will be going into the shed now and their first Show will be in March next year. The main thing about showing sheep is to make sure you are kicking your own goals and being happy with how they stand up against the rest. While it’s a great achievement to win the Supreme Exhibit, having a consistent team is just as important to us.
15.01.2022 Our 2020 Show team has been shorn thanks to Bruce Lines. We are very happy with the fleeces that came off them. Our Grand Champion Poll Ewe cut a total of 12kg with an impressive belly. Our best ram for the year cut 14.8kg.
08.01.2022 Armed with a new set of shears from Shearsharp in New Zealand, Will has been busy getting our 2021 Show Team ready for inspections. While labour intensive, it’s a strong belief that blade shearing gives a better tip on your sheep than machine shearing. It also means you can shear them later so they aren’t in the shed as early!!
07.01.2022 Robert Harding doesn’t just breed outstanding Merinos at Glendonald, he also has a passion for breeding Iris. We are lucky enough to have a few from his collection
06.01.2022 It’s a slow process constantly snipping and checking length. Takes about 30 minutes per sheep. Finally they are all done ready for inspections.
05.01.2022 Victoria Downs explodes into the New Year! Victoria Downs has significantly increased its Stud Ewe numbers with the purchase of 299 ewes from the Langdene Merino Stud, 197 ewes from the famous Haddon Rig Merino Stud, 217 Merino and Poll Merino ewes from the Glendonald Stud and 81 Poll Merino ewes from the Nyowee Stud. We have been attempting to slowly rebuild our Stud Ewe numbers from within since closing off our Cluster Fence in 2015, but the droughts of 2017, 2018 and 2019 ...significantly slowed our ewe number build up. In an attempt to not only increase our ewe numbers but to do so with some of the best genetic material available in the Merino industry we decided to make this significant investment. In addition to these ewes, we also purchased 9 Merino Rams and 1 Poll Merino Ram from the Glendonald Stud. Glendonald is noted for its ability to produce heavy cutting medium to strong wool sheep with wonderful nourishment. We have also purchased Poll Merino semen from the Lachlan Stud and the Willandra Stud. Poll Boonoke 26 has bred very well for us and we have put another 100 doses from him in our semen bank. We also purchased a semen share in a Langdene Merino Ram sold at Sheepvention 2020 for $15,500 - we were the losing bidders.
