21.01.2022 LEISURE ACTIVITIES CULTIVATE A HEALTHIER BRAIN: In an effort to find something positive online, I came across an article in Medscape Medical News, by Megan Brooks, on 16 March 20. This article explained that the participants in a recent study that engaged in increased levels of leisure activities like walking and gardening among other enjoyable past times, showed improve brain volume compared to those that didn't engage in such activities. The study of 1500 older adult partic...ipants (average 75 years, 64% were women) was released prior to a now cancelled conference and is yet to be published. However, the evidence from this research shows that those that enjoy life have healthier brains, and less likely to develop conditions like Alzheimer's and dementia which show decreased brain volume routinely. The study authors predicted that such activities can delay brain ageing by up to 4 years.

18.01.2022 LIFESTYLE & KIDS HEALTH: As children are spending more time at home during Covid19, it may be a good time to develop or focus on some good lifestyle habits. A recent study from Canada of over 3000 children found that adherence to good lifestyle choices proportionally decreased the risk of ADHD. This study found that not only does being active, eating well, limiting screen time and having a good sleep routine help children to be physically healthy, these factors also improve... mental health. Of course ADHD, is a multifactorial condition and there is no simple answer, however there now is research showing that focusing on what children do and eat does indeed have an impact on their whole well being, and that the answer may not necessarily be purely pharmaceutical. https://journals.lww.com//Adherence_to_Life_Style_Recommen

18.01.2022 CHINESE MEDICINE DERMATOLOGY: Just finished two intensive days training under one of the world leaders in Chinese medicine dermatology. Wow!! Amazing results for chronic and acute conditions. All with Chinese herbal treatments. It is a privilege to practice such a potent medicine even if my training is in the acupuncture limb rather than the herbal limb. ... Slight tweaks to pathophysiology and aetiology create different treatments processes. Looking forward to assisting patients with these enhanced understandings.

16.01.2022 Off to Canberra for a conference and awards ceremony this morning. VPAC will reopen on Thursday.

04.01.2022 ACUPUNCTURE & HEADACHES A new review published in Oxford's Journal Pain Medicine "found evidence of a statistically significant positive effect for types of pain, including headache and chronic pain" (p 1834).... At VPAC we utilise acupuncture and massage to address this common issue - to release the tension and decrease the pain. Call 3207 6642 to organise an appointment. 04.01.2022 RICE, ARSENIC & CHILDREN: A new Australian study into the arsenic levels of food in Australia shows totally inadequate safety standards for children. The safety standards in Australia are for adults only, and assume rice is not THE staple food. With increasing prevalence of food intolerances leading to more of the population requiring different foods, demand has led to parents having access to all manner of rice replacement foods for their children. This has unfortunately no...w put children at risk as consuming rice as a staple food comes with a risk of arsenic exposure. As reported by Australian Doctor journalist Heather Saxena (23/1/20) the research found some interesting very interesting information: * Products imported from China, which has some of the world’s strictest rice standards, have the lowest total arsenic levels, on average (0.1mg kg-1). * Products imported from the US hold the highest average levels of total arsenic (0.24mg kg-1), due to high levels of groundwater contamination. * Brown rice crackers have more total arsenic (0.17mg kg-1) than white rice crackers (0.095mg kg-1) because less of the rice bran has been removed. * Rice milk formula and cereals mixed with water or milk and eaten in moderation pose less risk to babies and toddlers than rice pasta and crackers. Whilst a small to moderate amount of rice based foods should be fine, it is important to have as diverse intake of food as possible to acquire different nutrients, and as this study shows to avoid potential risks from over consumption. https://www.mdpi.com/1660-4601/17/2/415/htm
