24.01.2022 CHAPPY CHATTER I have been talking to a few students this week who have struggled with assessments and are not happy with their results this term. When talking with them, I have talked about the importance of not focusing on what has not worked, but on what lessons we can learn to help them in the future. With every challenge comes the opportunity to learn and grow. Sometimes we can get into the mindset that our failures define our future path, but this is not the case. F...ailure can be a useful tool and a precursor to success. It is also a necessary part of learning. The only way to succeed with tasks, assignments, exams, physical activity, sport and life in general is through determination, persistence and embracing and learning from failures. Failure is a necessary part of learning and if we can teach our young people to learn from it, how to cope with it and move on, this helps them build essential resiliency skills for life. Focusing on what we can do differently and remembering that there is an opportunity to try again next term is like a re-set button. Can we seek to help our children understand what has not worked, identify what support is needed and focus on what can be done differently in the future? Have a good break and I look forward to chatting with you next term.

22.01.2022 Chappy Chatter: Last week I had the pleasure of attending formal and being part of the graduation ceremony. As always, it is a time of celebration, but also sadness for our students as they finish one big part of their life and move on to the next step of their journey. It can also be a bit daunting going out into the big wide world. The best thing we can do for our children at this stage of their life is to encourage them to take one day at a time; reflect on their school... years, their experiences and what they have learned; investigate lots of different opportunities; create new memories; focus on the present and look forward to the future. Some students might think that they have to know exactly where they are going as soon as they leave school, but that is not the case. I tell our students that, as long as they are moving forward, seeking new paths and opportunities, they will find their way in the world it is all part of the journey. I wish all of our graduating students the very best in whatever path they choose to take. Until next time. See more

19.01.2022 https://www.facebook.com/media/set/ Whats on @ VPSHS VPOP Today, 7-12 VPOP students participated in an incursion facilitated by yLead where students were challenged to think creatively to develop solutions, innovate, communicate, reflect on their own personal goals and identify some specific actions to see success. Students recognised that academic success is achieved by working with the people around you and not using them against you and that the environment we create for ourselves if focused on pressure and competition, can adversely influence our success. A fantastic day was had by all.
18.01.2022 CHAPPY CHATTER During this busy time with assessments and being tired towards the end of term, some students are struggling to stay motivated. What is motivation? It is generally defined as the desire to pursue and reach a goal or need; or in the dictionary a reason for acting or behaving a certain way. Motivation can be influenced by; how important the goal is; what we can gain from attaining it; and personal expectations. At this time of term and the end of the year, ...particularly for some of our senior students, it is easy to lose sight of goals and subsequently lose some motivation. I keep reminding senior students that I talk to that the end is in sight. They need to put one foot in front of the other; take each day as it comes and continue to try hard right until the end. This takes determination and effort. It really is like running a long distance race, when the body gets tired, the mind has to take over. What are some things that can help when we are feeling overwhelmed and unmotivated? Set goals even small ones for each day that are attainable and reward yourself when you complete them. Break tasks into smaller ones that are easier to complete. Use family and friends for support. Engage in positive self talk. Practice mindfulness when things get overwhelming. Remember that each small step leads to the end goal and celebrate successes. Remember what is important to you and why you set the goal in the first place. Take time out for small breaks and exercise. I wish all of our students the very best in their assessments. Hang in there. Until next week. See more

16.01.2022 Yesterday a select group of Year 9 and 10 STEM students were invited to attend the Griffith University Science and Engineering Challenge. The challenge was a day-long competition where each school team was divided into 8 groups with each group completing one or two activities throughout the day. Students were awarded points for each activity and the school with the must cumulative points at the end of the day was declared the winner. VPSHS students competed against 5 other private/state high schools and were awarded 4th place at the end of the day's competition. This was a fantastic achievement considering our much lower number of students competing than the other participating schools. Well done to all students involved!

12.01.2022 CHAPPY CHATTER Yesterday we celebrated R U OK Day with a staff and student pancake breakfast. R U OK Day gives us the opportunity to intentionally ask people are you okay?. I was talking with some students last week about communication and how we use verbal and non-verbal communication, in particular body language. I asked the students to demonstrate various facial expressions, i.e. happy, sad, angry, etc. One student gave a smile to demonstrate being sad and said this... is my face when I am sad, as I dont show how I really feel inside I just pretend Im okay. We talked about the importance of being authentic and honest about our feelings, as it is important not to stuff feelings of sadness, anger, hurt, etc down, we need to talk about them with someone we trust. This situation got me thinking about how often we ask someone Hi, how are you? without sometimes wanting to know the answer, it can become just another form of greeting. Even if someone looks happy, they may not always be happy on the inside, so it is important to really listen to the answer when you ask someone how they are and to ask more questions if you think they are really not okay. We dont have to have the answers but sometimes just asking someone intentionally are you okay? makes them feel like they have been heard and that someone cares. Have a great weekend everyone and lets be intentional in asking R U OK? See more

08.01.2022 CHAPPY CHATTER This week I had the privilege of spending two days with the year 6 high school transition students. One of the things I value most about being a Chaplain is building relationships. This is an essential element to my role in supporting our young people. These two days presented a great opportunity for me to start building relationships and reassure students that they will be supported when they start high school. During the two transition days, I was able to h...ave some great conversations and speak to all of the students about some important things to know when they start high school such as, being themselves, being a good friend, making good choices and being resilient. I really enjoyed visiting each rotation in the classroom and seeing the students engage in all of the activities prepared by our wonderful teachers. I feel so privileged to be part of our ever-growing school community. Have a great weekend and take care of yourselves and each other. See more
