25.01.2022 The view from my new studio! . Just a week into living here we have spotted a wombat, echidna, quite a few garden skinks, wild deer, a few rabbits, kookaburras and plenty of rainbow lorikeets and rosellas! With these beautiful surroundings there are a few things we need to get used to though. We just found out today that there is no post delivered to houses in this area. Everything goes to the local post office where we have to check on that and pick it up now and again. ... But I guess, I can live with that! . My studio is still about in a mess as I am waiting for some more shelves to be picked up, so I am not able to take up on large orders. 24.01.2022 My latest tapestry samples! . During this crazy house arrest times I think I have tried and practiced so many different crafts! . Lets talk about life for a minute and be honest I do not call it quarantine or self isolation, because quarantine is isolation of the sick, and self isolation implies that I am doing it willingly, which I am not. We, healthy people are under house arrest. The virus is real, it is certainly not pleasant. But do I agree that lock downs work to... stop the spread of it and are necessary? No. Looking at countries like Sweden or my homeland Belarus where no lock downs were implemented i do not think it is the best way to stop the virus from spreading. These two countries have similar or even better results with death toll and total cases without any closures. It is a violation of humans tights and freedoms to do what happens in Melbourne, Victoria right now.. Especially considering that suicide levels and deaths from late medical treatment due to postpones are much much higher than covid deaths... My opinion is just that - mine. You are free to respectfully disagree and I will still like you and will welcome you to my page. . SO... When life gives me unwanted lemons I make lemonade I use this quiet time to create, explore and fill our family space with love and happiness. So many new projects are in development at my studio! 24.01.2022 Does it suit me? Yes or no? I had a client that wanted to order wired headband in rusty colour. I didn't have the fabric in this colour, but I used a piece of cream cotton/silk blend fabric from my stash and dyed it with eucalyptus leaves and onion skins to get the desired shade (from my earlier posts). After I completed the headband I really loved it! So comfortable and easy to wear! Twist the wire and go! Now I want one for myself! This one must go. What colour should I... make for myself?.. Excellent opportunity to experiment more with natural dyes! . 22.01.2022 Update on my yesterdays post. In my making processes I attempt to go as close to 100% zero waste as possible. For example I collect ALL my fabric scraps and threads leftovers regardless how small they are. I reuse bigger pieces for other crafts projects. Smaller ones are hard to utiluse straight away, so they are usually accumulated. . Recently I felt that I actually need to empty some of my storage space, so decided it was time to reuse some of the tiny scraps I saved so... far. Two huge bags of sewing rubbish went into making two floor pillows for our living room. You will be surprised how much you can stuff inside of a sitting pillow! The outer fabric is from op-shop, it looks like it is handwoven cotton, very thick, heavy and with beautiful texture. . 22.01.2022 This is another example of how we attempt to go zero waste in our house. I reuse our old clothes that are beyond repair and are not good to be donated into rug making. Having two small daughters I have so much of their clothes that are worn or stained to the point of no restoration. I have been collecting these clothes for quite a few years by now. Since I have a lot of time at the moment, I cut them into yarn and finally started making a rug for our living room. . Every... stripe is a happy memory. 21.01.2022 This is my first attempt of creating zero waste pattern myself. I started with 2 metres of 100% wool jersey fabric 160cm wide and used 100% of it to create this dress with no off cuts left! So happy with the results! 21.01.2022 Another zero waste garment cutting is in progress here I got this piece of 100% wool jersey fabric with a great discount because it had a fault - ladder going through the whole roll. I simply stitched the ladder with welt stitch and eco printed the whole fabric piece with eucalyptus leaves. Just a basic mirror print made this fabric so much more interesting! 21.01.2022 Another Japanese craft I have tried recently - Kimekomi ball making. Kimekomi is a technique where a pattern is drawn and then cut onto a surface, such as a soft wood or smooth foam. Fabric is then placed over the pattern and tucked into the cuts. Kimekomi was developed in the 18th century in Japan as a doll making technique. Kimekomi literally means to tuck into a groove. I had a really old foam ball that I utilised for this session. . My creation is far from being pe...rfect, and I did not stick to the original technique cutting some corners. If I ever try it again I would definitely try to find a soft wood balls as buying new plastic for my creations is never an option in my studio. . 20.01.2022 One of my first handmade toys. They are more than 30 years old, the fabric even started to disintegrate on the gnomes face and cotton batting stuffing inside the frog thinned out. My mother saved them and brought them to me on her last visit. She even brought the book I used to cut the pattern! I started sewing really early. 16.01.2022 I am transitioning my business to work on PAY WHAT YOU CAN principle where I do not charge a certain amount of money for an item or service but instead let you choose how much you can and want to pay depending on your income and satisfaction with the product or service you received without any expectations from my side. At my online shop I have a price range for you to choose from - the minimum amount will cover postage and basic resources expenses, then it goes up to a cer...tain amount. You choose what you can afford to pay. WHY? Because I want to be the change I want to see in the world. Our society was built on a system where we conditioned to believe that people who have more money deserve more and people who have less money deserve less. Those who are more fortunate can afford to pay for better quality goods and services, can afford to buy ethical, sustainable, handmade things and the poor majority continues to buy cheap items and discard them as they break because they can’t afford to pay for the repair either. I want to change that. And our business models can either support the injustices of the modern world, or create a different story. My promise to you - No matter what you can afford to pay, I will always do the best quality job I can for you. Yes, creatives deserve to be fairly paid for their work. But I believe there are other ways of achieving that. I don't want to live in the world where everything I do is constantly compared to a certain amount of money someone thinks it is worth. Instead I want you to decide from your heart how much you value my work. You may ask what guarantee I have that some people will simply use me and not pay at all? There is no guarantee. I am simply opening my heart to people. Whether they choose to respond from the heart or just take advantage is up to them. . Does it feel a bit scary? Yes! But I believe in humanity. . 10.01.2022 In my making processes I attempt to go as close to 100% zero waste as possible. For example I collect ALL my fabric scraps and threads leftovers regardless how small they are. So after a project is finished NOTHING goes into the bin. I reuse bigger pieces for other crafts projects. Smaller ones are hard to utilise straight away, so they are usually accumulated. . Recently I felt that I actually need to empty some of my storage space, so decided it was time to reuse some of t...he tiny scraps I saved so far. Two huge bags of sewing rubbish went into making two floor pillows for our living room. You will be surprised how much you can stuff inside of a sitting pillow! 09.01.2022 It is interesting how sometimes accidental things bring up new ways and techniques. I was experimenting with eco printing, and to be honest this jacket did not turn out the way I wanted and I didnt like it at the beginning. So I decided to work over the prints with embroidery. It took me nearly all day to finish. I used beautiful 100% silk threads that I dyed with various plants earlier this year, and I love the result. 07.01.2022 Weaving time! . During this crazy house arrest times I think I have tried and practiced so many different crafts! Do I agree that lock downs work and are necessary? No. Looking at countries like Sweden or my homeland Belarus where no lock downs were implemented i do not think it is the best way to stop the virus from spreading. Especially considering that suidude levels and deaths from late medical treatment due to quarantine postpones are much higher than covid deaths...... BUT... Ever since I always wanted to get into the learning of this fascinating method of clothes cutting and making. This year, being under house arrest, I finally got the time to start properly! .
