12.01.2022 "In an Australian first, the state government could begin to treat medicinal cannabis the same as other medications as part of a plan to be drafted over coming months in consultation with MPs, police and doctors and expected to be implemented early next year. Medicinal cannabis prescribed by doctors has been legal in Victoria since 2015, but it remains an offence for drivers, regardless of their medical status, to have the drug in their systems. Wednesday’s announcement comes... after a five-year campaign by Reason Party MP Fiona Patten, who has argued it is unfair for doctors to prescribe cannabis for patients who are unable to drive after taking the medication." #AOD #medicalcannabis #cannabis #RDT
10.01.2022 The allocations in this budget highlight a government focus on the implications of Covid-19 on mental health, while assuming that it’s had no impact on [substance] dependence, Sam Biondo, the executive officer of Victorian Alcohol and Drug Association, said. The anxieties relating to Covid-19 and the impact of recession will result in increased at-risk alcohol and drug use and subsequent treatment demand going forward. #AOD #Budget2020 #COVID19 #substanceabuse #alcohol

03.01.2022 #ReconciliationWeek provides a timely reminder of the significant reforms which need to be done to create social equity for #aboriginal and #TorresStraitIslander. For too long, changes have been at best incremental with powerful resistance to do what is fair and right in the interests of better health and wellbeing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. While we welcome the pending reforms on public drunkenness, there is still so much to do.... The number of deaths in custody remains a national disgrace with inaction highlighting that for many, the status quo is acceptable. We know that many communities have been devastated by the high number of deaths in custody that have marked 2021. Broader reform of the justice system should be prioritised, to overhaul the discriminatory elements which have informed the operation of that system for decades and ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are safe.
02.01.2022 Fantastic News from the state government. Let's hope regional MSIRs are next.
02.01.2022 Media Release from VAADA Additional supervised injecting capacity vital in addressing reduce drug harm The Victorian Alcohol and Drug Association welcomes the announcement of a second Injecting room following the release of the Hamilton report.... Mr Biondo, EO VAADA says, ‘the benefits outlined in the report align with international evidence on the lifesaving practices that occur in supervised injecting facilities with the North Richmond facility carrying the additional benefit of having made 13,000 referrals to health and social services during its’ time in operation’. ‘Many of these referrals and the subsequent benefits in housing, health and welfare may not have been otherwise achieved’. ‘The surging tide of heroin harms highlights the wisdom in establishing a second facility to further reduce the harms, increase referrals and in part reduce the burden on the overstretched MSIR’. ‘We also welcome the announcement to improve amenity in North Richmond and look forward to the benefits to the local community, including traders.’ https://www.vaada.org.au//MED_Injecting-room-statement_050
