24.01.2022 This 1750 portrait in the NGVs collection is by Italian artist Jacopo Amigoni . It captures the fashion of the time in Europe with the softer lace cuffs and collars. It features a group of friends with famous castrato singer Carlo Broschi, known by his stage name Farinelli. Thanks to the NGV for showcasing online the lace featured in its collection, https://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/explore/collection/work/3701/

23.01.2022 Around a month ago we learnt the Lieve Jerger was ready to assemble carriage wheel number 4 in her 'Carriange of Lost Love'. This piece is an ongoing work that started over 40 years ago. Has anyone else got a UFO spanning this long? The story of the piece is very moving. To see images of the carriage and also some amazing other creations by Lieve click on the link below. https://lievejerger.com/
23.01.2022 Over the next little while we will share a few inspiring images from the NGV collection. What better way to start things off than with the Portrait of Mary, Lady Vere acquired by the NGV in 2016. The Guild members contributed a donation to this stunning acquisition. It is the earliest English portrait by a known artist to enter the NGV Collection. The sitter, Lady Vere, was a highly distinguished member of the aristocracy who lived an extraordinary life to the age of ninety...-one, at a time when the average life expectancy in England was just thirty-five! Black silk highlights her lavish Italian reticella lace cuffs and collar. Thank-you NGV for showcasing some of the lace featured in your collection in your online program. www.ngv.vic.gov.au/essay/william-larkin-mary-lady-vere/
22.01.2022 Common Threads: Laces Across the Border Part 2 Irish Lace Digital Conference Lace pieces were produced by both the Borris Lace Makers and the South Armagh Lace collective to produce a lace quilt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmi9KwG2u7g
21.01.2022 Unfortunately due to current government restrictions from the impact of Covid-19, the July Lace Day, including opening of the library, has been cancelled. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause and we look forward to welcoming you back to Lace Guild events when restrictions allow. Please note that any library loans will automatically be externded.
21.01.2022 Another portrait of the NGV Collection is a 1630s portrait by Thomas de Keyser of Amsterdam. The portrait is of Frederick van Velthuysen and his wife, Josina, completed a year before Josina's death. This work is a marriage portrait style. Thanks again to the NGV for showcasing lace in their online programming.... https://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/explore/collection/work/4101/
21.01.2022 Here is a wonderful video on the lacemaking history in Slovenia. This video has been shown by UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2018. Bobbin lacemaking in Slovenia is a handicraft skill of making lace by crossing and twisting thread wound on special wooden sticks known as bobbins. Using locally recognizable patterns with local names, bobbin lacemakers make lace in bands or in finished shapes. The lace is used to adorn clothing and fashion accessories, church and home textiles and representative spaces, and also serves as an inspiration for artistic creations more generally. The practice has notable therapeutic functions and is most frequently passed down from grandmothers to grandchildren. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjYtxBLocTU
20.01.2022 Did you know that the Victoria and Albert Museum has a great lace collection? Follow the link below and enter your preferred lace or lace object as a search term to browse through the online collection. http://collections.vam.ac.uk/
20.01.2022 The NGV also has lace as part of its collection. This is a piece from the sixteenth century. On close examination the lace maker has created a repeat pattern of flowers and animals with snakes, peacocks and a rooster featured, many of the creatures complete with tiny glass beads for eyes. While we dont know exactly how this lace was worn, we can imagine it was perhaps a trim for a sleeve, the edge of a garment or a smock, and was most likely worn for church. Thanks NGV for... showcasing lace in your online programming. https://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/explore/collection/work/44353/
20.01.2022 Bobbin lace is featured in the Dior 2021 collection. So great to see the craft being recognised in high end fashion today. A nice follow-on from the previous post.
19.01.2022 No Bobbin Winder? No Problem, just enlist your child, grandchild or neighbors kids to help make you one from Lego! Who knows, they may even help you wind a few bobbins too! We know visits are restricted at the moment so if they do not live with you perhaps send them this link and they can share their progress with you once restrictions ease or via video link in the meantime - cross generational engineering at it best! https://www.facebook.com/dyduch.justyna//10163581063800316/

19.01.2022 The next piece of lace spotlighted by the NGV in their online program is this Venetian lace of the 1500s. Lace was often used by the clergy in the Roman Catholic Church in Italy. The priests vestments were trimmed with lace, alter cloths had lace borders and the chalice was veiled with a lace. https://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/explore/collection/work/44333/

08.01.2022 Todays featured dress from the NGV collections was made C1912. It can be admired for its elaborate openwork lace of fruit and flowers in iriish crochet lace, which was developed in the mid nineteenth century in imitation of Venetian needlepoint laces. Motifs were crocheted independently and then assembled into the desired form, in this case a dress. https://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/explore/collection/work/44234/

04.01.2022 Are you missing the help and guidance from your fellow lacemakers at our regular meetings or classes you may have been having. It can be hard to learn a new technique or understand instructions in a book on your own sometimes. But some wonderful lacemakers have gone to a lot of effort to record themselves and provide these videos on Youtube. One Australian (Jenny Brandis) has made a lot of videos and can be found on this link on Youtube. You may find she has answered a question you have been longing to ask. Also big thanks to Jenny for making such great videos and sharing our craft with the digital world. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eg6EqmnuVbg

"So Sandra Day O'Connor and I thought it would be appropriate if we included as part of our robe something typical of a woman." in her own words - "I w...ould like to be remembered as someone who used whatever talent she had to do her work to the very best of her ability." https://www.bustle.com//what-do-ruth-bader-ginsburgs-colla See more
